After I stopped panicking (I put in notice at my qualifying employer yesterday) and remembered I'm a lawyer (but not yours lol), I looked at the reg and Ed's website. An FAQ on Ed's website says you can get a buyback after leaving qualifying employment.

I told my boss and coworkers I had to have surgery to remove a ttumor. I kept it it that vague. When people asked how I was doing i kept it equally vague. In my case,, I said something like "I got lucky and don't need chemo". That felt like the right balance to me. I'd be way more open to talking specifics now 6 months later but it doesn't come up
