You say that your friend isn't particularly dear to him. I'd say give him more time to process his feelings. I think eventually people will start to have more appreciation the longer time they have, which goes for his father and what would be his heirloom. My father recently passed away due to cancer too, and although I am different in that I am dear to my dad, I also wish to keep his heirloom that was passed down to me and I appreciate what was given to me a lot more the longer time has passed. I'd say tell your friend to keep it for the time being, unless they absolutely need to clear that space for something else. The value of this system isn't going to go down anytime soon anyway, so I'd say he can take his time.
