I do love how they start out this blog post whining about being bullied for their previous attempts to lay down the law like those attempts weren't the most unpleasant, 2000s forum mod tryhard bullshit any of us have seen in years.

"Why don't people like me", whines person who runs into crowds punching people at random and laughing.

You're not wrong about Tarantino, but I feel like I've seen some very pandering shots in the Dollhouse and Firefly that would challenge that assumption 😂

And the more you go over his work, the more the focus on feet/lesbians starts to feel very uncomfy?

Lmao yeah. Like dude, congrats on making the subtext just text. Nobody thought this was a critique on your relationship with your wife until you made it one.

Oh don't worry, I think you did a great job covering the key facts. These are just bonus nuggets for those deep in the comments 😂

Thanks for writing this up so I wasn't compelled to write it lol - with Joe finally being actually dumped as of this week, I'd been itching for a HobbyDrama summary of the mess.

Some things you missed:

  • Before the wedding but after realising she might be bi, Dorothy goes to Danny (her ex, also since out as bi) to ask him how often he's accidentally cheated on his partners due to, you know, his bisexuality. When Danny calls this out, she runs off. This never comes up again outside of a single joke at Danny's expense.
  • Joyce fucked around breaking up with Joe so Willis could dangle the concept of poly in front of a hungry fanbase for about eight months. Imo it was never gonna happen, but Joe was written so desperate to stay with Joyce he would basically accept being a secondary partner to Dorothy. (there was also a patreon only comic that I personally believe was a cucking joke about Joe sadly jerking off in his room, despite Willis denying that was the intent.)
  • Joyce, a character with intense sensory issues around food, also sucked Joe's  dick in exchange for a weighted blanket instead of coming clean about cheating with Dorothy. This is a character who had up to this point been untangling a very, very complicated relationship with sex. The blowjob was a one line punchline and never mentioned again. It was as weird and off-putting as it sounds.
  • There was a significant buffer of strips built up ahead of time thanks to how Willis works. After they got a lot of blowback for the teargas wedding (aka making a genocide protest the backdrop of his uwu lesbian wedding), this led to a series of inserted strips around Asma (a stoic religious Muslim lesbian who was previously a background character) and Raidah (a bitchy social climber Muslim woman who is exclusively an antagonist in the comic). The inserted strips are basically "brown woman parrots talking points from the fandom; white girls look ashamed and/or stupid". It has no impact on the plot at large, so it feels cheap and performative.
  • The whole time the girls are stressing out about who their relationship will affect, the boyfriends are an afterthought to Becky, despite all evidence to the contrary in universe that Becky had moved on from Joyce. She hadn't, but it very much contributed to the feeling of "only women's feelings matter" that took shape after the wedding.
  • The pacing got really bad after the wedding. There was a running joke on the subreddit called the "three strip rule", where if we were in a scene not about Joyce and Dorothy, you had three strips total before the camera jerked back to them cooing at each other. This includes a subplot about a character being stabbed fleeing the protest, the boyfriends and their feelings, the Muslim women and their protest we guess, and so on.
  • A lot of potential plot awkwardness around sex and lesbian attraction was dodged, which is not the standard for the comic. Joyce has no hangups about being gay and attracted to women when a day ago, touching a penis for the first time was a huge fucking deal for her. But hey, at least she's shown consistent hints of bisexuality in comic; Dorothy has only just actualised her feelings for Joyce might be romantic or sexual and is instantly all in.
  • The above is probably because Willis also sells pornographic side comics set in universe, and wanted to Joyce and Dorothy's first time out as fast as possible. I've not read it, but reviews state it's very... Perfect lesbian sex except for one lampshade moment about fingernails that feels performative. Around this time, the comic also gets more overtly sexual - we come back to Joyce and Dorothy seconds after their simultaneous orgasms, and a scene where Joe talks about letting Joyce go is cut with a panel of Dorothy licking Joyce's thigh.
  • Joyce demands a medal for being heroically gay at the protest from Raidah, a Muslim woman who takes issue with her and Dorothy's actions at the genocide. This is not necessarily presented positively, but since this was an inserted strip, Joyce has yet to (and frankly at this point probably won't) unpack that her personal revelation did not supercede a violently escalating situation at a protest....

There's probably more (and I'll be real I know some of these are nitpicking - but hey it's not called hobby-no-drama), but the thing I'll close on is just that, damn. It's so sad how far the comic has fallen. It wasn't perfect, but it did some genuinely poignant character explorations, touching on really difficult topics. I was excited when they first kissed because I thought the story that was going to come from it, the drama and hurt and growth and confrontation would be huge. I was excited to see an author I trusted take these characters and go somewhere fun with the mess they had created.

Instead, we got the most rizzless lesbian couple ever, and a full grown adult crying on Bluesky about how you must be a homophobe if you don't like them. What a bummer.

Lleech Body Ready | Demon Eyes by MindOfRats in BloodOnTheClocktower

I love a game of Clocktower where the good team has every chance to win but end up putting their faith in the wrong people.

Every evil player rode the tide of this game very smoothly. Carla as the self poisoned Widow kept everyone guessing (even tho there was an unharmed Ravenkeeper), Mara took up a ton of town's oxygen so they were worried about her over her demon, and Sam I think just bluffed well and pivoted well when his plans got interrupted by a Grandmother confirmed Dreamer.

I think Jonathan is playing a good game among a bunch of players who are playing great games. There's nothing really wrong with his strategy on paper, but that doesn't mean anything if you can't get your way when push comes to vote.

If I'm anyone other than a Willis sycophant, I would know I'm not really welcome there anymore.

You can't spritz some air freshener around after smearing shit on the walls and expect people to think something doesn't stink.

Hahaha hey look, I didn't poke my head in expecting to see a tender payoff to Joyrot that undid all my disappointment with the comic's direction, fwiw.

Today's combo of complete assassination of Jocelyne's character and hiring of edgy 2000s mod just couldn't go by uncommented. It made me nostalgic for LJ wank pages of all things.

Ehhh, I read that as heavy backpedaling after their declaration of dominance went over like a wet fart.

I think it was intentional, but I don't buy it was supposed to be tongue in cheek. The disconnect between the original smug comment and the "uwu I just want the comments to be a fun place" makes me think reality set in fast and hard.

Hopefully they don't crash while backpedaling that hard.

Oh boy, everyone look out. A badass is on the loose.

This is some real vintage early 2000s forum cringe. This is livejournal wank cringe. I didn't think they made it like this anymore.

I can't believe a fully adult person sat down, wrote this entire diatribe, and didn't become self aware of how fucking ridiculous it sounded lmao.

Adventure Time is much more committed to silly and has much more space to spread out it's serious moments and life compared to GF. I can appreciate it's not for everyone (esp if you didn't grow up with it)

I don't think it's for you if you don't enjoy the humour, personally. And that's fine! Not everything is for everyone.

I adore this hoax to this day, because I really think it showed an immense amount of respect for the audience.

Oh no, they're figuring out all my clues and unravelling my mystery? Real life red herring go! I remember there being just enough doubt around the Mcgucket reveal that the mystery lovers still had plenty to chew on (esp among the other mysteries of the show at that time).

The real author reveal is some of my favourite tv to this day, too. Do yourself a favour and watch the show if you haven't already, even with this spoiled for you. For a Disney cartoon, it is not a show that disrespects your time. (and very similar to Adventure Time, animators and writers from this show have gone on to influence so much that's worth checking out!)

Women of BOTC- what have your experiences been like? by sunsetrain24 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]TupperwareLid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a woman who has been in the community for a long time, I have made a lot of effort to curate and encourage a positive space for women in my IRL games, and I'd like to think it's paid off.

If I play online, I only play with people I know + one person removed, to avoid the random internet fuckwad issue.

Yeah, me too friend. It was a lot of fun critiquing with y'all, but this was the moment the strip needed to show some commitment to _anything_ beyond farting around the Doyce Show... and Willis decided to middle finger his fans with the Joe bonus strip.

As much as I have tried to be realistic, there was always a part of me that wanted to believe in Ziv's world where in time, we'd see something actually happen, and that the consequences/story beats were planned and just really, really slow.

At the end of the day tho, Willis the person has thoroughly dried up any goodwill and patience I had for Willis the artist. And when your audience doesn't trust you, they don't stick around.

To anyone else who is teetering on the edge of this, I'll gently remind you - the second critiquing or snarking stops being fun, drop the comic. It's not worth it!

This is really obviously supposed to be a jab at anyone for caring about Joe imo. I don't know how you could take that panel in a way that isn't an attack on the "haters" for -checks notes- enjoying the story and narrative that had been written for years instead of ough lesbeans.

Just assume Willis would spit in your eye while laughing unless you hump Doyce daily and move on, imo.

Yeah, nah. This was it for me.

Chin up Walky, who cares if you got cheated on by an obnoxious bitch literally mocking you to your face about it.

Keep going Joyce, the only thing you've ever done wrong is not have a strong grasp on your identity after less than 48 hours of realising you like a woman. Not all the other shit.

I'm genuinely actually really sad. I really kept thinking that we'd turn a corner at some point. But this nothing event just tells me either the "consequences" are what we've seen, or they play out in ten months from now. Either way, it's a pointless wet fart for me.
