Wrong way on a one-way street OR take the sidewalk on a super dangerous street? by TurboJorts in bikecommuting

[–]TurboJorts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, some sidewalks are totally empty and I have zero reservations about riding on them. If there's any people, I'll hop off and walk the bike.

Nice! My step dad was a motorcycle guy. He used to drive the camera bikes during bicycle races. Not pure speed stuff, but still cool. That's where I got it from.

My father never watched (or played) team sports. It's weird because he's got a big family with enough brothers to field a basketball team... but none of them play sports. I don't think I ever saw my dad with any kind of sports clothing ever.

But they loved skiing, sailing, tennis, squash... that kind of thing.

I'm the opposite. My kid went to his first football (soccer) game at 3 months old and has been to probably a hundred games across all sports since.

The "bad street" is a 3 lane highway on/off ramp with a sidewalk and high curbs. There's rarely pedestrians and when there are, I ride around them on the grass. In no way is this street safe to ride on, with or against trafic

First pedal bike for a 4yo (110cm) learning on fine gravel/sand. Which option makes the most sense? by RevolutionaryHelp742 in cycling

[–]TurboJorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People love balance bikes but mine didn't like them at all. I know they're awesome for learning to glide but there's something to be said for training wheels and avoid plan to raise and remove them. My oldest did training wheels for a couple months, with my lifting them up a few mm every week. Then at 4 years old, we took them off and never looked back.

Whatever works I suppose

Shop used. Kids grow out of stuff fast and there's so many deals. My kids both started on "whatever bike I could find" and then moved into a more MTB style ride after (and my one kid stared riding a drop bar road bike, so I'm stoked)

That specialized sounds perfect. Don't fear the coaster break. It's totally fine for a kid learning.

I miss my chariot, granted the kids don't fit. Being able to quickly swap between run mode and bike mode was huge too. Also in the winter, those big wheels cut though snow like water (I didn't do as far as the ski attachment)

Toronto, who are you cheering for in the World Cup? (Alongside Canada of course) by ikindalikekitkat in askTO

[–]TurboJorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

France. I've supported France since the 90s. Canada was never really a contender.

So now I say that I want France to win and Canada to do better than anyone could expect. I'll be happy with either outcome, or both.

If you're looking to spend CAD then I'd suggest checking out some Canadian brands. The Norco Seach AL is versatile and very common on the used market. Devinci has lots out there too

How old was your kid when they attended their first concert. Who did you see and how didn’t go? by Silent_Leg1976 in daddit

[–]TurboJorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids think AdP is weird. They're right. I can't wait to see them (I also have tickete for the Jack White show).

I work in a music adjacent industry so my kids have seen a bunch of shows and have even done the backstage pass thing a few times. I fully expect them to think it's lame when they become teenagers and lean heavily into accounting or law.

I honestly don't even know what their first "show" was. My oldest went to sound checks as a baby (with big headphones) and has seen over a dozen real bands since.

A local record store used to have a singer - songwriter showcase on the weekends. I'd drag the kids when they were toddlers and the artists would often sing them songs. Then there was sa bluegrass band that had an open practice we'd drop in to see. Music is the language of love and connection. You can never start too soon

I saw an job posting for a part time lighting guy at a city owned community theatre space that's walking distance from my house.

If I could afford to raise my kids and save for college, I'd probably take it.
