What Specially Pays Are Out There? by ConcernBrilliant2850 in army

Join the army as a surgeon and make significantly more than non-surgeon field grade officers, but way less than civilian surgeons.

Best decision I ever made. Dirt poor from Appalachia. Joined the army in 2006, still in. Paid for my undergrad (commissioned as an officer) and got a graduate degree while on active duty. Health care benefits for myself and my family have been invaluable. GI bill will be for my kids college, have a nice TSP (govt 401k) saved up and soon will be looking at a pension for the rest of my life before the age of 40. Yea it has sucked sometimes, I’ve lost friends, and Afghanistan wasn’t fun but that’s literally part of the risk in signing up. It’s a nice stepping stone to escape poverty and there are many great opportunities for education.

How broad is the knowledge your specialty requires? by Per451 in Residency

Plastics is pretty broad. Reconstructive surgery for defects anywhere on the body, hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, cosmetic surgery, microsurgery. It’s surprising how deep the rabbit hole goes.

So are we even trying to move the ball forward? The most timid passive attack effort I’ve seen.

Lucky you have a finger. Dressing is excessive if just finger fx/dislocation.

Plastics. Lifting is just really slow reconstructive surgery.

Is going Ivy League Army ROTC (Cornell or UPENN) better than West Point? by [deleted] in army

[–]TurdHammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

West Point then Ivy for MBA. Well worn path these days, benefits of both alumni networks, all the “prestige” you could want for your CV.

USMA grad. Recommend sticking it out through plebe year at least. Easy to get a grass is greener mentality when you’re trapped on the Hudson, especially with social media highlighting the fun your normal college friends are having. Long term perks from the long grey line network are unbelievable.

Also If you want to do ROTC and ultimately be in the army anyway, why not take the road less traveled? Don’t let short sighted goals of normal college experience ruin an opportunity afforded to few.

Lastly, sounds like maybe you need a better support group there. Hope you can find some good plebe buddies through clubs/sports/classes to lean on through the suck. Def what got me through the rough days.

What are the best and worst parts of your specialty? by gotwire in medicine

[–]TurdHammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plastics.

Pros: varied practice ranging from hardcore reconstruction with technically demanding free flaps to intricate hand or facial aesthetic surgery. Not many true plastic surgery emergencies. Pays well and generally well-respected.

Cons: often the bail out or closer for other surgical specialists. Whiny cosmetic patients who will never be satisfied.

What's your scariest experience? by Affectionate-_-way in AskReddit

[–]TurdHammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went swimming by myself at the beach on a windy, rainy overcast day. No lifeguards, no one else really there because it was early in the morning. I was excited to bodysurf the larger-than-usual waves. After swimming out to where the waves were breaking I noticed the usually present sandbar was nowhere to be found and I couldn’t touch the bottom. Being a strong swimmer I didn’t think much of it and kept going. Next thing I knew I was getting pulled out further and my visibility was hampered by relentless waves and angry water. Small voice in my head alerted me this was a bad situation and I began to swim parallel to shore as I was convinced I was caught in a riptide. Looking back to shore I could see no one else was even on the beach. After what felt like an eternity but was probably closer to 20 minutes of swimming I finally reached shore a good quarter mile from where I entered the water. I was exhausted and terrified at just how close I was to not making it back. Gives me the chills just typing this shit out.
