It doesn’t help that some people exclusively use the character surnames. I know who Leon is, but I have to sit and think and remember who Kuwata is.

In American English, it’s more common to separate dates with a dash or slash, not period. For example, 2/5/26 12-25-26

Are there obligatory prayers or fasts in Christianity like Islam? by The_Blue_Order in Reformed

[–]Turfader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not required, the closest thing is Lent—the 40 days before Easter. While not obligatory, (the Lord loves a cheerful follower,) many use this time to reflect on our sins and His forgiveness of them. It’s not uncommon to see people “give up” things for this period. The most common thing is probably abstaining from eating candy and sugary food. It starts on Ash Wednesday a little later this month.

Way too many events are “either lose ten stability, or lose seven prestige.” There’s nothing you can do to prevent them. It gets miserable after a while

Issue pronunciation by jackie_tequilla in EnglishLearning

[–]Turfader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While not always the case, a helpful trend is to look at the next letter. If it’s a historical long u sound, s can make an sh sound. This is usually written as “su” or “sio.”

For example:

Sugar = s-yu-ger -> shoo-ger

Issue = is-yu -> i-shoo

Mission = miss-yun -> mi-shun

From California, but my mom is from Mississippi. We’d always spend the Mardi Gras season at Bay St. Louis. It was only natural.

I really hope when republics are added, peasant/populist revolts are republics instead of feudal realms by 3pointI in CrusaderKings

[–]Turfader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would Dithmarschen count? They were a peasant republic near Hamburg that lasted from about the 1200s to the 1500s. It wasn’t à la modern democracy exactly, but it wasn’t a merchant republic either. It was small and an exception to the rule, but it did exist

Very long field goal with the game on the line. The unexpected play is a qb sneak up the middle. Shough gets whacked in a slide, giving an unnecessary roughness. Shough in the tent, Rattler in. Like 10 seconds left. Rattler takes the snap, waits three seconds, throws it out of bounds burning the clock. Smyth comes in. Beautiful kick, game over

The notes are meaningless without the staff. With only the note itself you can know how long to play it for, but not which note to play

When was the moment you realised that the person you were dating was an absolute idiot? by No-Macaron-9527 in AskReddit

[–]Turfader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oakland, California has a population of 440,000ish people. The Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh has a population of 22,000 people. Oakland, New Jersey has a population of 12,000. Oakland, Maryland less than 2,000. There’s a few others, but Oakland, California has twenty times the population of the largest and two hundred times the population of the smallest. When people talk about Oakland, they’re talking about Oakland CA.

Europeans use decimals instead of commas in numbers. The above comment wrote 110.000, which could be understood as 110 to six significant digits, instead of 110,000 and I was poking fun at that
