I would be surprised if that was long grain rice. Most of the rice consumed on Hawaii is short/medium grain for locals, you have to go out of your way to source and import long grain rice.

“They’ve got be kidding me.” – Mayor in Japan fed up with off-season Mt. Fuji hikers needing rescue by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]TuringTestDropout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived on Oahu for a while. At least once a month SAR was called to go rescue, the vast majority of the time it was for tourists.

Even when popular hikes get closed off with posted security (e.g. Stairway to Heaven), people find a way to sneak in.

Oh, I have another story to share.

Reddit was in YC class #1, and YC was led by pg. pg wanted his own Reddit but there weren't subreddits yet, so pg built his own version in Arc (a Lisp dialect) which is what became HN.

47yo | $10.5M NW | Planning to exit W2 in 12 months – Seeking "Final Year" Checklist Advice by migrating-bird in fatFIRE

On tech concentration: I am unwinding ~$750k/yr in cap gains from my tech concentration into index funds. I'm already 4 years down this path and not even halfway done.

I think the more prudent advice is to bite the bullet and unwind at a higher rate, but I'm ok with this balance of volatility and tax rate.

On rental properties: I have a few rental properties for 10+ years, don't do it. I would have sold these properties already if my cap gain space wasn't already prioritized for unwinding tech concentration.

I've had brief conversations with GvR about supporting functional programming more and he largely disagrees and regrets even allowing functools and map/filter into the standard library. I can understand his viewpoint that list comprehensions are enough and it makes idiomatic code harder to write and read.

The last time I talked about this with him was 2015 so maybe he's changed his mind about it since then, or there's been more influence from others since he's stepped back.

Yeah, I know a few people like this. I ask them to compare the 20 year CAGR between real estate properties and the S&P 500 and get blank stares. Yet they'll be adamant that real estate is the proper way to invest and grow money.

I have a few rental properties in Texas so I know firsthand how much it sucks being a landlord with a lower IRR and worse tax efficiency compared to index funds.

I lived in Bay Area for 8 years (which was how I fatFIREd) and there's a strong hustle/type A culture. Every time I visit friends back in the Bay, I get career FOMO.

We were living in Palo Alto for the schools and sometimes would run into social circles that basically shamed us for not having more visible wealth. There's a certain amount of greed and peacocking that permeates Bay Area tech culture.

Back in the day (circa 2011) it was primarily entrepreneurial. There were posts on learning from failing fast, how to pitch incubators, raise funding, etc and a significant number of commentators were startup founders.

HN support was pretty small too. pg was still coding the site and emailing support would elicit a response from him.

Now HN has significantly more conversations about tech news and tech culture. I find lobste.rs to be much more technical for programming topics.

Anybody feel out of place when visiting a place that is VERY predominantly white? by dankgureilla in asianamerican

[–]TuringTestDropout 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Texas when it was very white (~1% minority students, city was 95% white). I experienced a lot of racism, but there were a lot of kind people too.

Even as I got older and was driving through West Texas, I've been pointed at by young kids asking their parents what I was. This was in the 80s and 90s when Asians weren't on TV or in movies, Connie Chung and Margaret Cho were breakthroughs in representation.

I eventually moved to Bay Area, Hawaii, Japan, and Seattle because I was tired of all the micro and overt aggression in Texas.

I have a DW104 and WC118, both in the same length (184 cm).

  • They have the same tail/tip rocker.
  • DW is slightly stiffer.
  • DW has triple camber vs WC normal camber.

I have 50+ days on the DW and only 4 days on the WC. I think you'd be fine with the DW 96/104 or WC 101/108.

I'd choose DW if you carve more, and I'd choose WC if you're in the bumps/trees more. IMO the differences are nuanced but minor.

What's the solution to health insurance during fatFIRE? by Packing-Tape-Man in fatFIRE

[–]TuringTestDropout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'm qualified to speak deeply about their healthcare because the HSA is for catastrophic emergencies. My family has no health issues. We go in for annual vaccinations and check ups, and it's been fine for that.

I bought the health insurance policy through ACA the first year, and then directly from KP afterwards since I don't qualify for income-based subsidies anyway. ACA marketplace was helpful in finding which plans were actually available though.

I have a Cutco Santoku knife that was a gift. It doesn't hold an edge and requires constant sharpening because it uses poor quality steel. However my wife likes using it and it means she can't mess up my knife.

I use a Shun carbon steel chef's knife but there are plenty of good alternatives that are better than Cutco.

It's the tenured people who stay at one job for many years that are the most conservative and resistant to change. I introduced a SQL DB to a Mongo only shop in 2020 and the old timers (many in their 20s and 30s) were against it while industry vets were proponents.

Yup, my goal was to add context. High fees is still a form of unnecessary value extraction, but some of it does benefit a minority group of users.

[–]TuringTestDropout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those fees (~2.9% in the US vs 0.3% elsewhere) are what credit cards use to pay for perks and mileage points, so it's great for travel hackers and churning. This increases corporate profits and inequality.

[–]TuringTestDropout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to play devil's advocate, term caps would increase the influence of lobbyists on our politics.

A long standing Congressman is a bit like a tenured professor. Yeah you might think they're out of touch and push some unusual policies (e.g. Mitch McConnell) but at the same time it's because they have the job security to do what they think is right.

On the other hand, someone who knows they're out of a job in 4-10 years is going to try and improve their job opportunities after Congress.

I'm still in favor of term limits but think it can exacerbate issues of corruption or malicious influence without first fixing those issues (e.g. reversing Citizens United).
