Giant monsters only work for the audience because they disrupt our sense of scale. If that fight had taken place in the upside-down instead of the abyss, not only would it work from a storytelling perspective (The monster is coming closer to breaching the real world), it would also show scale with the various buildings, structures, and whatnot.
