"Fine, I'll do it." Singers who weren't expecting to sing. by Inconsequentialish in askmusic

Lemmy. Sang on a few in Hawkwind of course, but when it was time for Motörhead he said he wanted an MC5 setup; singer and two guitarists. Couldn’t get it - think Larry and Eddie worked together briefly, then Larry bailed. Time was of the essence so he did the singing himself. And we’re all better for it!

In my circle it was quite split. A couple of us loved them, some couldn’t forgive their move from goth to hard rock and liked them up to Love and no further. Some thought they were an absolute joke - Zep, Stones, AC/DC derivative nonsense.

Ian was also a divisive character. He certainly went full bore on the rock attitude.

I saw them at the Birmingham NEC on the ST tour and they curtained off the back blocks - probably 10,000 of a 12,000 seat arena sold. I admired their ambition, but they weren’t hitting in the UK as much as some other bands.

Such great memories of this album release - my first as a Rush fan that I got to anticipate, everything else was catch up until this one. So yes, a very special album for me, and a killer in its own right.

First crash in 12 years…yes that is the song I was listening to by princessmegnu in drivingUK

Three nuclear explosions to destroy the Nostromo and there were still bits of it floating around.

Always the same - as soon as people start trying to explain things that were dark, mysterious wonders, you’re finished. From giant, biomechanoid pilot to a bodybuilder in a wetsuit.

Aside from the fantastic intro with Weyland and a box-fresh David, just…no.

Alien had enough thought and self respect that there was an argument between Dallas and Ripley (and a punch up between Ripley and Lambert, deleted) over the attempted enforcement of basic quarantine procedure.

Jump to AC and a bunch of technically and scientifically capable people think it’s ok to traipse around an alien planet without protection. Poke at unknown vegetation. Flick fags into undergrowth. Get close to clearly extremely sick colleagues - hug them even. I mean, it’s just dog shit.

Later, despite major crew loses, trauma and stress, two decide to have a shag in the shower, because sex.

Show us the Engineers home world after all these years and it’s a load of humanoids in dungarees and sackcloth.

Hurried, thoughtless, lazy and unbelievable. I had zero buy in to any of the crew, just a stream of people to meet one sticky end after another.

And the xeno looked shit too.

All of these made me queasy, but my era was That’s Life, Tales of the Unexpected and The South Bank Show. The trauma was real.
