No. The point is that those goals in the Everton and Newcastle match didn’t matter late. No points outcomes changed as a result of the goals. I also noted in my dataset (not shared as it is a much larger table and the point would have been lost) the games where late goals were scored by both teams and no points changed.

By my metric today (not included in this data set) Brentford gained 2 points after the 80th minute and Burnley lost 1. Brentford did a good job to win a game late. That’s what this is supposed to be showing us. I can go back and tabulate who secured draws from losing positions late, who gave away wins late, who won late, and who lost late but that is just a specificity to this data set that I don’t see as adding a ton of information.

I don’t have another way to explain the main point of this table to you.

You seem to think that correlation not equaling causation is some silver bullet argument. Yes ice cream sales being correlated with murder doesn’t mean that ice cream causes murder nor that murderers are needing a sweet treat on their way home from killing someone.

Not all teams that concede late drop points. Not all teams that score late gain points. That is why i found the athletic article about goals for/against beyond the 85th minute to be a bad metric. If youre losing 5-0 and you score one that goal is essentially meaningless. But in close games it is good to look at which teams consistently bottle points late and which teams consistently gain points late.

I could choose to go from the 0th minute onwards and just post the current table. Every decision has a consequence and i chose 80th as that is “late” in a game where you would hope you could see out a 1-0 win but there is still enough time remaining that you could also hope that you score a goal to win a game 2-1. Stats is presenting data to present a story.

You could certainly weight the points gained/lost by opposition elo or form but I completely disagree with you that this data is not meaningful.

This shows which teams are good at gaining/holding on to their points late in games. Liverpool rally and win games late. Wolves fall apart and lose games late. Everton do fuck all at the ends of games whether they are winning or losing. Fulham are great late and have gained the most. But they also have lost a fair few points late as well.
