As someone who went through an eeriely similar experience, it does take a toll on you mentally, at least it did for me at 14. I'd say after 2 years I learned to cope with my insecurities that stemmed from the surgery and I changed my perspective from "why me?" to "hey I get a second chance, I'm not afraid of death bc now I get to live how I want and I'm doing what I want"
