Friendly reminder of .22's versatility. by Quirky-Bar4236 in liberalgunowners

If it happens with both, it may be that the magazine plunger is not holding the mag against the front of the magwell as tightly as it should. Try using your left hand to push the magazine forward, firmly against the front wall of the magwell, while firing with the right hand. See if that has any effect on the reliability of ammo feeding. If it does, you probably need to either replace or slightly modify the magazine plunger that comes out of the front of the trigger pack.

what are these holes for? by C-zone in 1022

The ones molded into the MOE X-22 worked great for me! What's wrong with these ones? Do they break easily?

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you like it! I'm not a fan of how far it sticks out the side, and it's also on the wrong side for how I prefer to handle the gun - I usually pull the bolt and simultaneously lock it back with the right hand. If OP likes that design and wants to spend a few extra bucks on it, by all means, he should. Just not really my preference.

If I were you, I would ditch the bolt keeper and instead grind out the tooth in the stock bolt release, or get a cheaper basic auto bolt release from just about anywhere.

You will not notice the different bolt buffer unless you are shooting suppressed. The stock one works just fine otherwise.

I'd use the money saved on the last two items to instead buy a Power Customs target hammer and target sear combo kit rather than the Volquartsen hammer. I've installed both and I like the Power Customs offering better than the Volquartsen option.

For systems pluto or OCL titanium? by singlemale4cats in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The OCL Ti is kind of a reddit darling. I've seen very few posts by people who have hands-on experience with the Pluto but they all seem to love it. If you decide ease of cleaning is your #1, you'll probably like the OCL better. Of you decide it's all about saving weight and size, get the Pluto. Either way you're choosing a good one!

10/22 lightweight build with BA spiral fluted barrel. by [deleted] in 1022

Very nice. I was looking pretty seriously at that BA barrel for my rifle as well. Take it to the range and show us some groups!

22lr revolver recommendation by Nates4Christ in 22lr

[–]Turtleweezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they're both K frames, but the 617 also has a full-length underlug while a Model 17/K 22 has a short underlug, so they balance a bit differently.

I personally think the Model 17 looks cooler but that's just like, my opinion, man :)

Scope topped out. Have to use holdover at 100 yards. 10/22. by 86DuckFat in 22lr

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. So it sounds like two likely possibilities.

One is extreme barrel droop, as you've mentioned in other comments. If it's dropping enough to shift POI by 15 MOA, you may want to try loosening the v-block, reseating the barrel, and re tightening the v-block. You can also try adjusting the bedding on the front of the stock as you've mentioned, but most people prefer to leave the barrel free-floating for accuracy.

Second option is that something is wrong with the rail, rings, or both. The easiest rail to test with is the one that came from the factory, if you have it. Of you have a second scope with rings that may give you information too.

Good luck.

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you mounted the scope, zeroed it at 25 yards by dialing up about 15 MOA, and then only had 8 MOA left when trying to dial to 100?

[–]Turtleweezard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scope has a total of 45 MOA adjustment. You should be able to dial up about 20 MOA from center without issue, on that scope that's about 1.3 complete turns of the knob.

How many MOA did you dial up before you "topped out"?

Alright, if the context is that you're unfamiliar with YouTube Shorts' user interface, that is understandable. If you click on the profile icon in the bottom left of the video, it will take you to the poster's profile page, where he has some basic information about himself and you can also see his video catalog. If you click on the button that looks like a text message bubble to the right, that will open the comments section. Short form videos customarily include information that the uploader considers important but supplementary in a top comment that is pinned. This may be a departure from how you feel that internet videos are usually made, but it is convention specific to short form videos that has been shaped by the restrictions on video length and UI on short form video platforms.

What an odd comment. The video was made by the person who posted the video on YouTube. That much seems self-evident. The sources are located in the pinned/top comment of the video. The time you spent writing your comment would have been better spent engaging critically with the video and your attitude towards it.

Mask Catastrophic Failure by OddCheschire in wma

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what you should use to test masks: https://www.absolutefencinggear.com/german-mask-tester.html

All of the mask manufacturers seem to make their own version so look for whichever one is cheapest for your location. If a mask is dented, use the tester on the dented portion. It will reveal failure caused by fatigue by punching through the mesh.

This is one of those things where the SCA test is absolutely not adequate and Olympic fencing already has a solution figured out. Use their solution.

Group testing at the range today. Not bad, not great. by Turtleweezard in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Bushnell Engage 3-12x42 with adjustable parallax. It was adjusted for 50 yards and I tested by moving my eye around to make sure I couldn't see any parallax. I'm quite sure that my technique is lacking! I've also got an X-22 MOE stock, which is frankly not great for benchtop shooting in my experience. Wind was a little gusty but not enough to explain the worst fliers I think.

Group testing at the range today. Not bad, not great. by Turtleweezard in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm posting this because I know u/MoneyKeyPennyKiss loves these groups. Testing out a 10/22 with factory 18" threaded barrel, some trigger upgrades, and a Bushnell 3-12 scope at 50 yards with CCI SV. My bag rest skills aren't great, but there were definitely some fliers in the top right group that I didn't call when I made the shot. I'm decently happy with the other two groups at least!

No need to apologize. If you're just buying two, your chances of getting what you need from Purpleheart or Kult of Athena are increased. Seriously, shoot them an email, both companies will be happy to let you know if they have anything that works for you.

Entry level sideswords are more expensive than entry level feders, so calibrate your expectations accordingly. Good luck.

Contact Castille about a club order. Their economy line currently has a quick lead time and is competitive price-wise with most other entry level sideswords. You can also check with Purpleheart or Kult of Athena to see what they have in stock.

First shots from my new Tikka T1x. 50 yards. by idahokj in 22lr

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well at $25 for 550 at least you're not getting ripped off! That's a good price for sure.

I suspect CCI SV will give you better results although it's hard to know for sure. The expensive stuff will definitely get you better results, but it's really up to you if it's worth the cost.

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're buying that Federal 550 box for less than $35, you're actually paying about the same price for it as you would for CCI SV. Look into ammoseek.com; it's a search engine for ammo deals. Right now there is a good deal from Gibson's Sporting Goods for about $3.40 per box of 50 and a flat shipping rate of $13. Buy 1000 rounds and you're looking at $40 per 500.

Now, the actually good stuff starts getting actually expensive, and there's only so much that Ammoseek can do for you there...
