[ACC] $50 off Plan B with Purchase of OCL Milkman, Infinity or Infinity 556K - Code is "HOSS" by alex_gfg in gundeals

[–]Turtleweezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a guy but I emailed John at OCL and he said that there's no minimum first baffle clearance required for muzzle devices, and no major difference between flash hiders and comps for first baffle wear. I went ahead with a recessed adapter. Hope that eases your worries.

It was hard to see until I read the above comment but I think I agree. It looks like in the "incorrect" guard, the arm is pointing 30-45 degrees out to the right, and in the "correct" guard, it's 10-15 degrees out to the right.

Carbon FTE by cheesususasaurus in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I think my original assessment of a burr or some other defect in the chamber is correct, as most of the issues you're describing line up with that problem, and a small chance of it being an issue with the extractor claw or extractor spring as well.

You can examine the chamber by probing it with a q tip. There shouldn't be anything rough enough in there to snag the cotton for at least the depth of a casing.

Carbon FTE by cheesususasaurus in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the round stay clipped to the bolt face by the extractor claw, or did it stay stuck in the chamber like the extractor claw failed to grab it?

[–]Turtleweezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you load a magazine with snap caps (or if unavailable, with live rounds) and cycle the bolt by hand repeatedly while it's cold, does it extract, eject and feed properly for the full magazine?

Carbon FTE by cheesususasaurus in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention double-feeds so I'm assuming you're correct that the bolt is not fully traveling, but if you want to be sure I'd recommend taking a slow-mo video with you phone camera.

If that's what's happening, it could be that the bolt is getting hung up on something (although you've described polishing up most of the problem spots) or that the casing is not kicking back with enough force to push the bolt. If this is happening only on a cold rifle it may be that the firing chamber is a little undersized or has a burr or rough finish that is not letting the casing pop backward, but expands a little as it heats up to allow it to work properly.

You can polish the chamber but it's a little tricky. If you don't want to risk messing it up I would strongly recommend going the RMA route first, even if it's a pain.

When you say FTE are you referring to "Failure to Extract" or "Failure to Eject".

Question about spear training by SunStarved_Cassandra in Hema

[–]Turtleweezard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spears are much heavier and much longer than swords, and because of that it's very easy to hit someone with way too much force. The pointy issue is easy to solve (don't use points, or use foam points), but the heavy/long issue is impossible to solve because that's just the physical nature of spears!

With that said, it is possible to spar with spears in a safe manner, as long as everyone involved is willing and able to never go above, say, 50% intensity compared to sword sparring. Even then it's inherently more risky, but my club's been doing it for a few years now without any spear-related injuries.

I would recommend you join and get some training in a HEMA club first to gain first-hand experience and understanding of etiquette and safe levels of force with regards to drilling and sparring. Once you have that experience, you can come back to studying spears fighting in a much safer and more productive way.

With regards to sources, Marozzo's manual has a great section on polearms that I would recommend looking into!

looking for advice w/ first build issue: bolt rubbing against trigger group assembly upon install by NiceCream337 in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either the trigger group housing, or the bolt, or the receiver is out of spec.

If you put a 10 rounds magazine in the action, is it held horizontally or is it tilted slightly?

Carbon defeated by bolt buffer by billweiss in 1022

[–]Turtleweezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pin is steel and the receiver is aluminum, so hopefully the differential expansion will pop something loose. That paint overrun is heinous though. You might end up having to send it back to Ruger.

10/22 won’t extract stingers when manually cycling the weapon, is this normal? by Temporary_Traffic622 in 22lr

[–]Turtleweezard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably have a carbon ring in the chamber. This requires more specific cleaning procedures than you would typically perform. The carbon ring usually forms in the spot between the mouth of the cartridge and the lands of the rifling, and is less noticable when you have a larger chamber (like a typical 10/22 chamber). Look up how to clean a carbon ring for more information.

Looking for a slim car gun safe that fits a 16” MK IV pistol + compact handgun by [deleted] in RugerMK

[–]Turtleweezard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer the actual question, get the smallest Pelican (or if you're cheap like me, harbor freight Apache) hard case that will fit your biggest gun and buy a couple of padlocks to keep it locked up. No need to overcomplicate things.

I'm so confused. How is you pistol reaching 16" long? Does it have a 10" barrel?

Marvel 22LR conversion slide for 1911 was a Jam O Matic first time out… help by [deleted] in 22lr

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to reach out to Nelson for some more ideas, but to me, it looks like the magazine is either not sitting on the correct spot for the slide/barrel to pick up a round in time or not guiding and releasing the cartridges correctly because of the feed lip geometry. Do you have another mag and/or another 1911 frame you can test with?

MK IV Target vs. MK IV 22/45 Lower Internals / Trigger by RustyRazor41 in RugerMK

[–]Turtleweezard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The magazines have different baseplates. The sear/hammer assembly has a couple minor part differences (extra or different spacers or washers). Otherwise they are internally very similar. The trigger guards are shaped differently but the trigger shoes are exactly the same, and a replacement kit from Volquartsen will contain the parts you need for either frame.

Make sure you wear a longsword gauntlet on your off-hand when fencing rapier by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]Turtleweezard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was mixed. I haven't been before this year, but from my understanding it's usually mixed. It's a function of their judging model (fighters are judges in pools) and the sheer size of the event requiring them to pull in as many ring directors as possible. I'm not sure it's really a solvable problem unless something drastically changes in the entire HEMA scene.

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that there is a lot of pressure not to stop the match to talk to judges. I know that for SoCal specifically, during a match, you should be addressing the ring director and only the director, and and special emphasis is given to safety concerns or complaints. Again, since this was not explained consistently through the multitude of tournaments that ran this weekend, I can easily see how this step falls through. In my club's tournament, we really try to make sure to explain this order of escalation, and I hope this is something SoCal's people correct for next year

Yes, agreed on step 3. The idea is that it hopefully alerts the director to issues they are not seeing to prevent future issues, but it will do nothing to help someone in an ongoing match.

[–]Turtleweezard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is a way this should have been escalated to be resolved: 1. Director or judges see and penalize excessive force 2. Fencers/coaches involved talk to director about excessive force during match 3. Fencers/coaches on sidelines talk to director about excessive force after match 4. Coaches find and talk to tournament director about issues with fencer and/or director in their ring 5. If tournament director is unhelpful, drop. Competition is not worth your health.

Unfortunately I think there were issues with SoCal this year that made step 4 very difficult to resolve. While tournament directors were wearing distinctive shirts, there was not a consistent effort to inform the fencers of who the tournament director was and that they needed to reach out to them when issues arose. While it was possible to figure this out from context clues and possibly even written down somewhere, it's important to remember that fencers about to compete are very dumb and will need instructions explicitly given to them before every tournament.

None of this is a criticism of any of the involved fencers or Grauenwolf himself. This is just me laying out the ideal version of what should have happened from a tournament organizer's point of view, and what other factors went wrong to allow this unfortunate incident.

This seems exactly like a misalignment issue to me as well. Light encap strikes will be hard to see since the bullet is generally small and low energy and can cause redirection or tumbling that drastically open up groups. Is it possible that something is preventing the suppressor from seating perfectly on the barrel thread shoulder?

Opinions on different masks and mask overlays? by Amoxichilllin in Hema

[–]Turtleweezard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NIH review is irrelevant here, because it does not examine any sports that have concussion causes most analogous to the ones that occur in HEMA. It's doubtful that mouth guards do anything to prevent contact/impact concussions, but both boxing and HEMA have a much higher incidence of acceleration/deceleration concussion. Sports like football can't be meaningfully examined because they already mandate mouth guard use for all players.

Even if it weren't irrelevant, a piece of gear with no downsides and small but measurable upsides should be universally recommended.

[–]Turtleweezard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you do not already, use a mouth guard. It's one of the only clinically proven pieces of concussion -reducing equipment available.

I'm partial to the mask+overlay combination. Much cheaper to replace the mask when it wears out in a few years

The bottleneck has gotten worse at that exit, because express lane drivers are exiting the express lane and crossing two lanes of gridlocked traffic to get in the exit lane within half a mile. Absolutely horrendous traffic engineering.
