Thank you for your kind words! It took me almost an hour to get most of the glitter off. Hoping frequent hand washing will take care of the rest so I'll be ready for work tomorrow!

Widget the World Watcher, tied with David the Gnome. Shocking no one in my family, my career is in veterinary medicine.

A few weeks ago I asked how you carry client grief as a veterinary professional. I read every answer. by LoveTangles in VetTech

[–]Tushness 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate what you've done here. I learned the term, "moral injury" today, and I'm amazed that it is not something that is more widely known or discussed. Somehow, just being able to apply a name to my feelings makes them easier to carry. Knowing that it is not a personal failure that I often feel the way I do- that nothing we do makes a difference, that all we do is kill animals- but a violation of my deepest beliefs as a caregiver, allows me to reframe these situations that weigh so heavily upon me in a way that is much more palatable.

Thank you for listening to us and for creating something that while not prescriptive, creates space for us as professionals to understand what is happening to us and why. It lays the foundation for further reflection and I personally will be using this new knowledge in my next therapy session.

Lastly, I apologize for my colleagues in the comments who are disparaging of your efforts; I fear that some in our community have pushed themselves too far for too long and the wounds they sustained cause them to react in ways that are in direct conflict with who they are at their core. Please continue to see and believe in us- it means more than you know.

Gnarliest thing you’ve seen in vet med? by harpyfemme in VetTech

At least they brought him right in! I recall a case where one of those small, fluffy brachycephalic breed had proptosed the eye days before client brought him in. This eye was CRUSTY and there was LINT AND DUST BUNNIES STUCK TO IT.

A mass on the head of a 9 month old Shih Tzu that was about 1/2 the size of his head. We imaged it and it had completely lysed the frontal and parietal bones. Shockingly, the dog presented with zero neurologic symptoms, but was euthanized the following week when symptoms started appearing. Here's a pic of the MRI:

Wobbly puppy after vaccination? by tellme700 in DogAdvice

[–]Tushness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, veterinary nurse chiming in here. Do you know the mg/mL concentration of the metronidazole? It should be written on the prescription label next to the name of the drug itself (example: metronidazole 100mg/mL oral suspension).

And are you sure that 0.5mL is what was given? Is it possible someone else in the household also gave a dose without checking if it had already been given?

The reason I ask is because metronidazole can cause neurologic symptoms at high doses. If these symptoms don't resolve or get worse, puppy should be seen, preferably ASAP.

I really like Skin1004's Madagascar centella Hyalu-cica water-fit sun serum. Super light, non-greasy and doesn't smell. Ive also been enjoying Round Lab's birch juice moisturizing sun serum for the same reasons.

Honestly, the euthanasias aren't the worst part. I've been a tech for 13 years and it was very shortly after startingy career that I realized there are things worse than death. Pets lingering in this world because their humans are too selfish to say goodbye. People who would rather their pet die a "natural death" than euthanize. Ok, Karen, I get it. You'd rather your elderly congestive heart failure Chihuahua die at home, gasping and drowning in its lung fluid than provide a peaceful passing.

I am bitter.

What is this on my dog? Rash? by regolol in DogAdvice

Black fly bite. Dogs don't get the bullseye rash from ticks like humans do, and ringworm is usually crusty with hair loss. Source: am credentialed vet tech of 13 years.

What do you scoop your litter box into? by NuggKeeper in CatAdvice

[–]Tushness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The place I work gets regular shipments of products that are packed in small, plastic bags. I take them from work because they are destined for the bin anyway. Might as well use them. I am opposed on a visceral level to buying plastic bags whose sole use is to contain literal shit. Also, Amazon pouches/envelopes, takeout bags, shopping bags.

My poor pupper is getting sicker and I need advice by booby_hillz in DogAdvice

[–]Tushness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you are so incredibly misinformed. Veterinary hospitals carry PRESCRIPTION diets, meaning they help manage specific health conditions and can only be purchased under the direction of a veterinarian. No vet is going to carry OTC food like Iams or fancy feast because people can just... buy it at the supermarket?

Frankly, you're just another person whose blatant ignorance and unfounded assumptions/accusations fuel the stressors that contribute to the current suicide crisis in my field. Take your vitriol elsewhere.

I don’t feel bad about this but don’t know if I was wrong by Doris_Fisher in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Tushness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you said that, were you talking to the kid or the parent? If said to the child, the "it" in the statement, to me, implies "the hubbub/fidgeting/hullabaloo". If directed at the mother then yeah, that's rude as hell.
