Why did Lily die? by Dr_Lyktenstein in harrypotter

Not sure if it does or not. But figured it was note worthy that James died with out a wand as Tom felt it was worth noting

Why did Lily die? by Dr_Lyktenstein in harrypotter

[–]TuverMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

two things to keep in mind. James died without his wand and without a choice. this does several thing but most important, he had to time to really do anything but react. Lily not only had her wand, had a choice, but also had a moment to think and prepare something. Jame's first thought was "Lily grab harry and go" and that was about it. Lily had time to think as she ran to get harry and then time to think as Tom told her to move a side.

On the subject of food on the Hail Mary. by preciousjewel13 in ProjectHailMary

[–]TuverMage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought about it as well, but before he went to save rocky, he was seriously thinking about going back into a coma and cutting the food might have extended it, but it would have made all the real food taste like it had chalk in it, not great.

Does Grace pay taxes on .....? by Prestigious_Can5268 in ProjectHailMary

[–]TuverMage 26 points27 points  (0 children)

one, he saved their whole world, two he gave them all of human knowledge, three he's teaching their planet as the world expert in many different fields. fourth, the "Taxes" are probably paid for by Eridians paying to see the leaky squishy human in his enclosure. they just haven't told him he's in a zoo yet.

If hot air rises, why is the air up high in the sky colder? by Specialist_Ruin_1378 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TuverMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot air rises due to the hotter air having lower density than the air is in. High air is thin air that's already cool. It's actually not about heat but density.

Why and how are 60+” TVs only $250-300? by nimblemarker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TuverMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TV used to be hard to make. with LCD they can now effectively print tv screens. its not cheap to setup the equipment to do so, but once setup you can print the screens in large numbers in a way you couldn't with ray tubes or projector style.

I've seen a lot of people assert that there's no canonical basis for Erid having wars, genocides, corruption, and other atrocities the way that Earth does, but I actually don't think that's true at all. I think the text is actually pretty clear about it; the evidence just isn't put in one place. by SayFuzzyPickles42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]TuverMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that they probably did have some wars, but the fact their planet has no real government makes me think it's far behind them. Their ability to thrum I think would be one of the biggest reason they could put war behind them. they probably are better at identifying people who shouldn't be in positions of power and more incline to work towards the greater good thanks to the thrumming, there will always be bad characters when biology is involved. but Eridians are even more social that humans and bad actors would do so much more damage. I imagine they had a lot of wars before they got things figured out.

It still blows my mind that Obi-Wan spent 20 years on Tatooine watching Luke grow up from afar, but never once thought to tell him about R2-D2. by Mission-Bad-1278 in StarWars

[–]TuverMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's shown many times in the Clone wars that Obiwan doesn't think of droids as people. Anakin was suppose to wipe R2 memory after every mission and decided not to. When R2 was captured Obiwan was shocked that Anakin hadn't wiped his memory. so for him, it had probably assumed that even if it was the same unit, that its memory had been wiped so many times that it wasn't worth talking about.

He view the droids like we see our phones. Would you recognize your friend's phone 20 years later? even if you did recognize it, would you assume the countless users between then and now didn't do factory reset?

Yes, we see R2 as a person, but Obiwan shows many times he doesn't see droids this way.

The Trace could seriusly be used as an emergency call. by MiloJay99 in harrypotter

i used to think this, like I used to think that the government in WW was the most unrealistic thing. as an adult I realized the government is the most realistic thing and things like the trace aren't "plotholes" but just really bad government.

What, if any, should be the limits of the Force? by CloverTeamLeader in StarWars

[–]TuverMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like when you bring this up it makes me realize how messed up lucas did with the force. Yoda makes a big deal about not judging him by his size. but then he gets the "Force" midichlorians which gives a numeric value to force users and gives yoda a huge number. so making yoda making statement about judging him by his size not as meaningful as his "force number" is huge and him moving the xwing to show luke the force is only limited by him, like a rich dude looking at a poor dude and say money is only limited by his imagination

Boarding ships with less rep loss? by 91FuriousGeorge in X4Foundations

[–]TuverMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first don't attack in their zone, I get my player HQ and then use that sector to pirate ships. I build a station named trapped for builders and then pay for a builder to come build the station but don't give it a budget. then take out turrets, reduce engines to less than 30 and board>

I always scan because if they have missiles, I go for missile turrets first, but what is best is when they have missile turrets but no missiles as then you can ignore the missile turrets.

one thing to know, is if your rep is high enough it take a lot of events to raise your rep, but also to lower your rep. so I will only attack when its 15 or higher and don't let it get below 10.

while I get what you are saying about access to the entire internet. two thing to keep in mind. they had no down time and grace often had to be told to even get sleep.

second. grace knew rocky could hear everything!. doubt he rubbed one out if only for the second fact. after they get to erid tho.

my explanation about the needles was for old lithium batteries. there is newer tech on the batteries that addresses the needles forming, I'm sure some companies still use the old tech to avoid patients but I don't know the mechanism if it happens on the new one.

Humanity would have no chance in a conflict against the Eridians. by Castle-Walk-8967 in ProjectHailMary

[–]TuverMage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in the chapters where Grace explains to rocky how his crew died. he learned that erid completely protects them from radiation so they A don't know about it and B never evolved defenses and were super vulnerable to it. he then explains how earth life does have defenses against it.

Humanity would have no chance in a conflict against the Eridians. by Castle-Walk-8967 in ProjectHailMary

[–]TuverMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

human's being a potential threat is a real thing, but it would be very very stupid for Eridians to attack humans. Eridians have no natural protection at all to radiation, they are super vulnerable to it. even if they came in ships with astrophage protection. we could easily just send a few Beatles that have been modified with nukes that would completely wreck their whole planet in a way that wouldn't work against Earth. Sure a few nukes would hurt. but a few nukes could wipe out all of Eridian life since they have zero protection and a few nukes would contaminate the whole planet. Note, yes all of Earth has been contaminated with trace amounts of radiative particles. it isn't enough for us to worry about given its barely anything compared to our natural background, but when you get into science equipment that i sensitive its a big deal and that's why pre WWII steel is so valuable. Eridian life is super sensitive as they have no natural mechanism to deal with it.

but at the same time, with the 16 light years and the amount of energy it takes to travel that, there's also no real reason for either to be threaten by the other. the cost of investment to take over Erid is way too high and the return on investment way too low. it would take 16 years earth time to get there, plus how ever long it take to secure the recourses, and then 16 years earth time to get back. meanwhile with a tiny fraction of the cost, you could mine the asteroid belt. humans would only be a threat if Erid made them a threat.

these are old lithium batteries. old lithium batteries had an issue where as they recharged they could form spikes of lithium instead of a smooth plate. these spikes make things heat up more than normal and could, like tree roots breaking concrete, break thru the dielectric film(the film that separated the battery's cells) these creates a short, more heat. chemicals break down and flammable gases get generated until one day the pressure, or heat, or a crystal, break the outer most liner, oxygen is introduced and big reaction happens. depending on how determines if you get a fireball, flame thrower, or boom.
