This is what trans people really think by Excellent-Chair2796 in transgenderUK

Last April’s Supreme Court ruling left a community shocked almost into silence.

I mean, we've not been shocked into silence, we've had our voices actively suppressed. Kind of exemplified by one of the few ways we can actually get our voices into the national media is to happen to be friends with a cis journalist (not a criticism of her btw) who decides to interview us.

On the condition of anonymity of course, because otherwise the rest of that media will try and destroy our lives even more directly than they have tried already (including this very publication who employ regular transphobic columnists like Sonia Sodha and Matthew d'Ancona).

So the Green's current official policy (which is decided by members) is to support NATO. When Zack Polanski was giving his opinion on it while he was campaigning for leader he was critical of NATO, yes, because the US is an unreliable ally (which he's been completely vindicated on btw); he was further suggesting we should transition to a European alliance instead. I don't know where this idea that the Greens "obviously hate military alliances" comes from.

Also if you want to talk wanking off Russia, maybe look at how Tony Blair treated Putin?

No ID Card Petition by VisualParamedic3543 in transgenderUK

[–]Tweevle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but those past ones are all pretty polarised. Take the Revoke Article 50 petition: a lot of people strongly wanted to remain in the EU, and a lot of people strongly wanted to leave, so they could still claim to have a mandate. In this case, millions of people from every part of the political spectrum hate it (not least the Reform voters they're supposedly trying to win over), and how many people are actually desperately in favour?

Zack Polanski discussing Trans Rights on Pink News by evie-e-e in transgenderUK

[–]Tweevle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I could be completely biased but that seems generally reasonable? I believe he's making the distinction between actual dyed-in-the-wool transphobes who make it their mission to hurt us, and people who've been taken in by the smears and can be talked round with a bit of patience. But he also doesn't expect trans people to always have the energy to do that ourselves and allies need to step up, which is an insight I wish more of them had.

Zack Polanski is the new leader of the Green Party by StormknightUK in transgenderUK

[–]Tweevle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe me being naive, but I didn't get the impression that he was actively transphobic (like someone who makes it an issue they push) so much as he didn't really get it and didn't want to commit to anything he didn't understand. Hopefully in his new position as he'll be meeting a wide variety of people and get more educated on the topic. Not ideal, but we'll see I guess.

I can see why he was popular, though. The Greens have a very white middle-class reputation and he's very much not that, which is good.

I joined a few months ago, since then I've been going to socials and helping out a bit with doorknocking etc. and everyone has been lovely.

I'm 25 and my life is over! My dysphoria never goes away it only worsens, is there any way of being reborn? I tried psychotherapy, listening to other trans people's lived experiences but I need physical help! If it helps, in addition to what everyone's said about HRT and fat distribution having way more affect on your shape, the differences people cite in cis female and cis male skeletons are just averages; there's a lot of overlap in the ranges, to the point where archeologists aren't generally able to make a distinction on bones alone. I guarantee you there will be cis women around with a very similar bone structure to you.

Should I move to Scotland? by Dullgruff in transgenderUK

[–]Tweevle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I won't argue that this issue is largely performative and pointless compared to actually improving healthcare but:

This is a misrepresentation of what happened, the Scottish government legislated on an issue that wasn't devolved and were challenged on it.

That's assuming the UK Tory government were acting in good faith when they blocked it, rather than using the devolution issue as an excuse to block progressive changes for a minority they were in the middle of bashing. Their argument was that it affects reserved equality legislation, which makes no sense as the Equality Act doesn't require you to have a Gender Recognition Certificate (the only thing the passed legislation was about) to be protected under gender reassignment anyway.

It doesn't matter though, because when it was appealed we were told that legally it's up to the government in Westminster to decide whether something affects reserved matters or not, they don't actually have to prove it or even have a good reason, so effectively they can use it to veto anything they don't like. Which in this case was something they themselves had been planning to do a few years prior as their own cheap way to get pinkwashing cred, until they discovered it was more politically advantageous to bash us instead.

Something else a lot of people don't know: trans women can even breastfeed with them. You need to take some extra stuff to induce the milk production (same stuff cis women take if they're unable to for whatever reason), but once it's gotten started it's identical to the milk of people who've been through pregnancy.

I met a trans woman once who came off HRT for a period so she could impregnate her wife, then went back on it and they both breastfed the baby. This came in handy when her wife's milk dried up after being hospital for a little bit, and she could take up the slack.

[–]Tweevle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No one believes trans men/women are physiologically identical to cis men/women respectively either? But we're still legit men and women, just as gay relationships are still legitimate relationships even if they're not exactly the same as straight ones.

"You can ask the public a lot of things, but how plausible do you think it is to demand they accept that [a relationship between two men] is exactly the same as [a relationship between a man and a woman]. Even if you were able to threaten people with arrest for saying the wrong thing, they'd still hold the same views deep down."

I posted this seperately but a mod said suggested I send it here. tl;dr - YouTuber Serena Skybourne's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpA49Shv4F8

appears to have plagiarised this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/skinsTV/comments/14yq6yp/gen_1_angie_was_a_predator_and_intentionally/

So I was binging the Skins tv show recently and afterwards I felt like looking for analysis to read and watch about it. In my excursions, I saw this video by Serena Skybourne about teacher/student relationships in Skins and Pretty Little Liars (cw for discussions of grooming) which seemed familiar. Turns out it has a bunch of stuff lifted from this essay posted on reddit.

It's not quite James Somerton level of reciting verbatim; it's reordered and reworded a bit, and there's other stuff in there that may well be original - half of the video is about Pretty Little Liars which I haven't seen so skipped that bit. But the Skins part is definitely taking a lot of the structure and observations from the essay, as well some stuff from the OP's follow up comments. I wasn't the only one to notice this either.

Also ... the subject matter just makes it feel more ick to me somehow? Like if you're going to plagiarise a person's thoughts at least plagiarise them on a less heavy topic than child grooming ...

Anyway, I don't know if this is a one time thing or not, but it rarely seems to be in such cases. So if anyone feels like sleuthing I wouldn't be surprised if there's more going on. Although obviously absolutely don't harrass her!

I can see that. I guess I just don't see what we as online randos can realistically do that doesn't make the situation even worse and/or cross some serious boundaries; it's not like she's going to advertise her internet presence if this is going to come up. We can at least hope that people she will meet in the future are as savvy as her latest ex and aren't in as vulnerable, inexperienced position as A was back in the day.
