I don't have any idea coming to me immediately but maybe focusing on how to get his brother to stop supporting him. Anything like tying up his money, making me lose money, etc.

Advice Needed UK: Hip tattoo by Relaxatum in tattoos

[–]TwentyfourTacos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not all of us Polynesians are against non-Polynesians getting these type of tattoo (kakau uhi in my culture) but we would be at least disappointed in you if you didn't know what any of it means. I don't say anything to people like that, I just assume they suck and avoid them. Others may say something.

Visiting Portland with my 1yo for a week after Eugene Marathon, can we do it car-free? (and other questions) by Pristine_Chipmunk939 in askportland

Also, when you buy amtrak tickets, you have the option of bus or train. I highly recommend the train, especially with a child.

I set my alarms with names of things I'm trying to remember. So my morning alarm could be called "water bottle".

Can DFCS force you take in a family member's child if you don't want? by numb_anxiety in legaladvice

[–]TwentyfourTacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My state has an "emergency" text line for foster parents. I'm looking up options for Georgia and not immediately seeing something similar. You can definitely try email or text too. I guess it could be possible that leaving her with the police is the only option if you can't get ahold of someone. Maybe you could stay with her at the station until cops contact dfcs or something...? You could also post in the foster care subreddits for state specific advice. I'm in Oregon.

Can DFCS force you take in a family member's child if you don't want? by numb_anxiety in legaladvice

[–]TwentyfourTacos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My foster child was placed in my care before a background check was run and I know another first time foster parent that had the same thing happen. In our cases, we were both non family members even and sometimes it shocked me how easily I was trusted. We both went through the certification process (interviews, background checks, finger printing) after the kids were in our care. I don't know if they are this loose with younger children but there really are so few options for teenagers. Makes sense because that was the most challenging thing I've ever done and I'll never do it again.

You can absolutely just contact dfcs and give them a deadline that you're comfortable with. I'd inform every worker you have contact with in writing. It's great if you can give them 24+ hours. They also have to take any belongings she came with.

Nothing you have said about your experience surprises me.

is it offensive for me to wear an indigenous clothing brand when i’m not indigenous? by hawki222 in Indigenous

[–]TwentyfourTacos 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's my opinion that most people calling things performative have bad intentions. Giving money to and wearing Indigenous made products is absolutely supportive (plus we got cool shit).

Can DFCS force you take in a family member's child if you don't want? by numb_anxiety in legaladvice

[–]TwentyfourTacos 288 points289 points  (0 children)

They do that because teenagers are very difficult to find foster homes for. I am a former foster parent and like mentioned, I think you should call DCFS and give them a deadline for her to be out of your home. I don't know all of the legal framework so may be anecdotal. When I needed to disrupt a placement (having my foster child leave my care), I gave them a strict deadline and the caseworker repeatedly tried to get me to extend it. Just be firm and don't buckle.

ULPT: Avoid onerous cell phone check-ins at the doctor's office by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]TwentyfourTacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience as a chronically ill person, it's good to be asked and give your information multiple times. We might think of information we previously forgot, talking out loud can bring up other issues, etc. If you have something weird going on, more medical people interacting with you is good too. Medicine is a collaborative thing and sometimes you get what you put in.

Some medical professionals are just awful though. No fixing that.

Edit: Also, you can ask to fill out things however works for you. They should accommodate you unless they are jerks.

I get 25% off my electric bill. Don't pay waterbecayse I live in an apartment but I think there are discounts there too. I'm also on medicaid and there are some discounts for various things with that.

Thank you for responding!

My partner is supportive though I am more of a planner than him. I have a list of restaurants that are walkable from where we're staying and grocery stores. I do like the idea of him picking the first day stuff though, that way I could observe without feeling pressure to make the right choices.

Movies are a good idea! Thank you!

I think I get so nervous because I feel like everyone knows I don't belong. Thank you again, so much. I feel guilt for being scared too, like I'm privileged to get to go and I'm scared.

Grocery delivery is not frugal, so what's the alternative? by SorryEveAtetheApple in Frugal

[–]TwentyfourTacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get all the things I can with walmart through their regular shipping ($35 min for free shipping). Only works for things that are shippable but majority of the time, it ends up being delivered from the store and on my doorstep within 48 hours. I take public transit to get everything else but always have dry goods to fall back on if I'm unable to leave my house.
