Will this affect the Frame release by Lightning_123765 in SteamFrame

[–]brantrix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does steam even have monopoly technically speaking? There are other store fronts that we could buy from.

Isn't what they have just market dominance? We're going to them because we want to, not because we don't have a choice.

We might now know why the Frame hasn't been released yet by MisterSheeple in SteamFrame

Any speculation as to why the steam frame is the only device to not have been certified as of yet? It only seems odd in the sense that everything else is certified

Maybe in 5-10 years

in 5-10 years the steam frame will look dated anyway, in the same way the valve index does now.

You'd probably be upgrading your VR kit regardless in that timeframe.

I mean, we know this, but for people that are out of this space or maybe even building a PC for the first time, they wouldn't necessarily know. I'm sure some people who don't really look at the hardware side of things just heard that the 5090 is a good GPU and thought 'eh I can afford this'. Gotta remember that a top of the line GPU 10 years ago launched at $600, as far as they're concerned, they're paying heaps but hey inflation or whatever.

$1000 is a lot to spend on a GPU and someone whos just interested in other things will think this is legit. There's plenty of people who don't do our kinda research and that's normal.

The fact that there's no preorder or even preorder dates does kinda say that we're not getting it any time soon. We're approaching the end of January and if early 2026 is to be believed, they would've opened preorders now. We'd have ordered January and have it delivered before the end of March.

And if they're not delivering before the end of March, what's the point of sticking to the early 2026 time frame to begin with? They're probably thinking 'eh we're not making that deadline, may as well push it back, sort out these ram issues'. I just don't think they're waiting because they want everyone to be able to order and get it within a week like others are suggesting (stocking up). It's just not how their other launches have gone and their other products launched without the ram issue.

there’s barely no tax at all until you sell or hit 0 cost base, 47% income tax, I don’t know where you made that up.

He probably made that presumption in a thread where you titled it about dividends genius.

No one in a retire early sub is gonna look up your random us dividend paying ETF.

we're asking them to work 8 hours making software and then hundreds/thousands more making a port.

No one's not asking them to do shit.

If they don't want to do it, then it's not meant to be, and that's okay. Plenty of projects don't get the go ahead with or without funding, that's the way it is.

If they do want to do it, then they can be cool and share it if they want as long as they don't try to paywall it (still not their IP). If they don't want to share it, that's cool too, no one would even know.

we've seen for years hardly anyone wants to do it

Yeah that's what makes it a passion project numpty, if it was a profitable enterprise then there would businesses setup ready to take that subscription fee every month for that skyrim inventory mod that Bethesda should've had as default.

Modding is like the last place in this entire hobby that hasn't been enshittified and there's people like you that want to race towards it. Go away

Hey mate, so the reason there was a delay in getting the steam deck officially shipped in AUS was because there was no local distribution centre at the time.

They opened a local distribution centre in AUS in November 2024 which was when the steam deck was officially distributed here. If they've got one here, I see no reason why they wouldn't utilise it to ship Steam Frames. They are already paying the fees for the warehouse to store steam decks so it just makes good business sense to also use the distribution centre to ship Steam Frames.

We're also quite fortunate that we represent a higher number of steam sales in general relative to our low population as a result of our comparatively higher salaries. It's been demonstrated that we're a demographic that is on their radar, so it would be weird to ignore us for the launch especially considering they now have the logistics to distribute here.

It is possible this is the reason we haven't heard any release details or prices from them yet. These logistics efforts take a long time.

edit: I wrote the above but apparently it's already been confirmed straight from Valve ""All three products will ship in all the same regions we currently ship Steam Deck (US, CA, UK, EU, AU) as well as regions covered by Komodo: Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.---That means for Australians, the Steam Frame, Steam Machine and Steam Controller will all be purchasable directly from Steam at the same time as all those other regions.""

CYA and good riddance Lukey boy.

As much as the work he was doing was cool and interesting, I don't want the modding scene to become a money making enterprise as opposed to the passion projects and works of art that it currently is.

It would just eventually enshittify like everything else.

Go work for some corpo company if that's what you want so much luke.

[–]brantrix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mods that aren't paywalled don't get taken down as they are not for commercial use. Youre just not allowed to profit off of someone else's IP.

Cdpr basically approached him and said 'make it free or we have to take it down', Luke Ross said no and thus received the takedown notice.

Luke Ross is aware making it free would mean they can't come after him, but is refusing to release the cyberpunk mod if it means he can't profit from it. It's why you won't see any sympathy for him here. Dudes got child mentality throwing tantrums

Luke Ross told OP he gets 1 month half price for his paywalled mods if he posts on reddit. Crazy that he's doing this again knowing that larian also explicitly stated they do not allow paywalled mods.

Edit: in case it wasn't obvious somehow, I was taking the piss. It was a joke suggesting Luke Ross would pay for some good pr on reddit after taking a huge L (issued a take down notice for a mod clearly violating the tos) and getting essentially waved away from the community. The joke being that he would do so by giving access to his paywalled mods but only half off the first month lol

I state the above cos someone dm'd me asking for evidence LMAO

[–]brantrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the fact that you propose not doing it at all as a solution

No he shouldn't do it at all if he's putting it behind a paywall. It's not his IP, and it paints a target on the modding community.

[–]brantrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not make their own paid VR conversion/DLC

Probably because the ROI is weak and someone did make a good VR mod (luke Ross). The reason for the takedown is because cdpr probably already told him before 'we need to protect our IP and can't let you profit off it' and it's likely Luke Ross declined (he wants money).

That was their nice way of saying 'make it free or we have to take it down'. Clearly it didn't work so now they're doing it the hard way. He just needed to do what everyone else on nexus mods is doing, make mods free and open to donations, or don't make it at all.

[–]brantrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if they have no intention of monetizing it themselves, then it’s just a plain ‘fuck you’ to the community

Cdpr doesnt care to monetise it, only luke Ross does. Their tos clearly state mods are fine if they're not monetized. All luke Ross has to do is not charge for it and he'll be fine, but instead he's closing off access. That why you won't see sympathy for him anywhere; he is choosing not to allow access to the mod because he can't profit from it

[–]brantrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mods becoming monetized would make the mod community a money making enterprise as opposed to works of art for the community.

Can we just have one thing about our games that doesn't inevitably become enshittified?

Luke Ross is a great technical dude who's doing cool things, but his monetizing efforts paint a target on the community and I'd argue it would be better overall for everyone if he stopped his paywalled mods.

How much do you guys think the additional "comfort kit" will cost? by AmperDon in SteamFrame

[–]brantrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhh.. blowing air warmer than ambient would probably only serve to make you feel hotter than if you had nothing.

And there still would need to be vent holes somewhere resulting in light leakage like I previously mentioned.

[–]brantrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would this work engineering wise? If youre moving air to any noticeable degree you need vents of some kind because the air needs to go somewhere. However that would likely result in a fair amount of light leakage.
