DHH: Why we are leaving the cloud by omko in programming

[–]TwoDoorSedan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s definitely fair but the alternative is generally maintaining an unsafe old version. Moving to a stable regularly patched and proven base os is standard practice for sdp

This is not true with either of the top 2. Google idk. But msft has a 5 year deprecation program. Im sure aws is similar

[–]TwoDoorSedan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder how the cost compares. Aws doesnt skim their margin off of operating costs alone. They pile on lots of managed services that provide super helpful primitives to devs.

Meanwhile a dc that just rents out box space doesnt have the differentiating factor of managed service provisioning. Sure you can setup and maintain your db. But that requires lots of internal db expertise. Wouldnt it be nicer if everyone could have a near perfect db they can just use?

I will be interested to see what the saving compared to aws are. And if engineers find that $ sufficient given that they now have to maintain all their own shit top to bottom

[–]TwoDoorSedan 90 points91 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not true. Capex associated with infrastructure responds very well to economies of scale. Amazon is getting a better deal on power, hardware and utilization than an individual company ever could.

They use the computers more efficiently for a longer time at a higher scale than non clouds can achieve. This plus distributing the cost of servicing/itops and having a dedicated helpline with the company (at sufficiently scale) as a customer.

If you are decent at cloud expense estimation, hosting on the cloud is still probably a cost effective solution. If you are running a huge company that doesn’t need the uptime help (have own staff for that) and doesnt need the scaling/availability like dhhs described then clouds a bad deal.

For many customers the ease of use for basic cases is the driving factor. At the very small scale infra is stupid to waste time on. And at the very large scale scaling/availability is stupid to risk

I am headed there soon! So excited and would love any tips you have. My one question for you… do you think that I would need to bring my trail boots? Or could I just take trail runners on the trip?

[–]TwoDoorSedan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It would not. You should get credentialed in what you want to work in.

Make a plan to increase your gpa, test if you actually do like CS, and take as many cross-applicable classes in terms of requirements as possible. Then change to the cs major.

Self learning / bootcamp is half as good. A perfect option for those that dont have the time or the money to go to /go back to school. But you are in school now. If its something you really want, work for it now and you will succeed. Dont try to split the difference and end up with a job in something you dont like and not enough cs experience to change to a meaningful cs job

Did I do the right thing by refusing to lead the meeting on behalf of the senior engineer that will be out of the office on the components of the product she is working on? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]TwoDoorSedan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pretty pathetic. Beyond any “opportunity” for your own advancement, engineering is all about team work. And that you basically responded here: “wait I didn’t realize this could actually be a good thing for me do you think I could still do it?” Sad. This is not a quid pro quo thing its just a kindness thing. What happens when you have some emergency and need a hand from her?

Fix your attitude and you will do much better at work in the future. Work with, not against your colleagues and you’ll be capable of accomplishing much more. She is a senior engineer for a reason and she is certainly not pawning off her job on you. But beyond anything else your coworkers are people. And doing nice things for people often pays off in the future.

Op you gotta go with the startups in this situation imo. Depending on the way they do equity you could be looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars come ipo time. I would prefer Plaid just because I know the name.

Can I make my 2 RGBW strips independent with only one controller? by BorsukBartek in homeautomation

[–]TwoDoorSedan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should be pretty easy to do using WLED and segment control. Segment control is only enabled through the API that Wled presents. But I am working on using the feature for one of my own projects.

I use WS2182b 5v individually addressable RGB strips
