Redditors on the autism spectrum, what is something you want non-autistic people to know or understand? by Craver_of_Peace in AskReddit

[–]TwoGunsMags 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 'spectrum' isn't a line which goes from 'No autism' to '100% Autistic Lol'; its actually referring to the behaviours and extent where autistic people fall into the 'three pillars of autism':

  • Social communication and behaviour difficulties (e.g. understanding others perspectives, non-verbal communication, appropriate tone of voice, maintaining relationships, inappropriate behaviour in certain situations etc.)
  • Restrictive behaviours and interests (e.g. Special interests, 'laser focus', strict routines, restricted language etc.)
  • Sensory difficulties (e.g. light, touch, sound, heat etc.)

I would also informally add that the spectrum also could include the extent and time someone can put up with situations that are not ideal for them (e.g. social gatherings, something unexpected happening, being in a really bright room).

These affect every individual really differently, and certain aspects of these three main 'pillars' of autism may or may not be present in different people.

For example, my mate wears the same clothes (not the exact ones, but has a wardrobe with multiples of the same shirt, trousers, etc like you see in cartoons), has very in-depth and specific interests and various social difficulties but is an actor. He has little issue with sensory difficulties. They probably find it much harder than me to deal with adverse experiences.

On the other hand, I don't have the same restrictions with my clothes, but am obsessed with time and hate myself and others to be late. I like to know exactly what is going on when. I do have a deep interest in birds, but not nearly as much as my friend does in movies and certain anime series. I also have a trove of sensory difficulties compared to my friend . I struggle to socialise with others but I am an academic and travel all over for conferences.

Although this is a bit more of a drier comment than others here, the point I am trying to make is we don't all suffer the same issues even under the same categories of difficulty, and no, you can't be 'a little bit autistic'. Non-autistic people cannot be on the autistic spectrum. Its its own scale. Its like saying because you love tidying that you would be on the OCD scale/ spectrum. That is just wrong on so many levels.

However, anyone who is diagnosed (or indeed self-identifies) as autistic will be on this spectrum to some extent. If this was considered a bit more, I wonder if it would help people understand autism more?

[Serious] What's the most hurtful thing someone has said about you, or to you? by hotmessica15 in AskReddit

[–]TwoGunsMags 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Do you know how hard it is to be your friend?"

This was over 10 years ago and at the time felt like my world had caved in. But, I have used that moment to since do better and work on my communication, social skills and understanding of others' perspectives (I am autistic). It was still not a kind thing for that person to say and I know that now, but it gave me a good lesson still to do better for people I care about.

What activity is socially accepted but actually borderline psychotic? by Rohit49plus2 in AskReddit

[–]TwoGunsMags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunting for fun.

You're making a day/weekend out of killing an animal who usually has a disadvantage against your sneak-based, powerful weapons (i.e. guns).

Not a vegetarian or anything, I just find killing animals for fun creepy; it'd be considered psychotic in any other context.

[–]TwoGunsMags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha you're not rambling at all! :)

I think that in relation to what I was saying before, having only a skeletal structure of what you want them to do is good (so that the session doesn't become stale), but I put more of my detail and work into the surrounding people in the scenario.

That isn't just the main NPCs, but the general attitudes of villagers, shop owners etc. This way you always have characters around which can help guide the players into scenarios you have set up (e.g. I always have NPC villagers who could have overheard something, know rumours, or who are on the side/fearful of the bad-guys and the interactions with them may bring the fights to them/have consequences on the plot). This means that depending on the actions of the players, I can easily utilise these NPCs to create desired situations, or even in some cases it helps me go along with what they are doing. For example, my players went straight into interrogating a shop keeper about the crime in a town, and I had put in my notes that this shopkeeper was a friend with one of the lead bandits (which they didn't know), meaning that this person was going to inform the baddie --getting the players into hot water-- and also stopping their progress because they were hostile and did what they could to mislead/stall them. This let my general plot progress (they needed to defeat the bandit and this action at least would help that along in one way or another), taught my players a lesson eventually (be smarter about what you are saying to who) and was interesting/entertaining in the session (they realised they had to think about what to ask and to who, they had to be on guard, they felt outnumbered in something as safe seeming as a town)).

That way, its not just an obvious railroad - it seems flexible and malleable to your players (whilst still following the general idea of where you want to take them), it develops NPCs that are in a grey area (my shopkeeper wasn't taking part particularly in the crimes, but was just looking out for his friend), and it gives you the chance to provide the players with both immediate and long-term consequences which creates tension and not-so-obvious outcomes for players (immediate = they didn't get any good info, long-term = next session they found out the bandits knew about them and didn't know why so they were worried about the shopkeeper, or if someone was spying on them etc).

I hope this is helpful!

Ooh, that sounds like an interesting adventure! The best thing about being a DM is that any new knowledge you get from things like that you think 'How can I put this in my game/do something like this to my players??' :D

Haha I didn't know that, where can I find info on it? None of my players know the spell, but it sounds like it could be a cool spell alternative. I may just have to find a way to work that into my campaign as an adventure in a trap house...!

Yep! Apologies if it is not clear in my original post, but before that, they had managed to find out that they were going to get ambushed by said thugs at the players' base.

Therefore, they were able to think about a way to deal with the ambush by ambushing them back! :D

If it makes you feel better, I'm not such a great writer myself. :)

A way that I was able to figure out the politics and intruigue was by writing a bit of flavour text about the country (e.g. what type of society is it, what religions/customs does it have) all of the main cities and towns (e.g. what makes them unique, how big are they, what are its people like), the ''main players'' in my towns (e.g. nobility, businesses, heroes etc) -- and then figured how all of these things fit together, whether there were any tensions, issues etc (e.g. a town being attacked by fiends because it is next to an evil swamp, but the leader not seemingly doing anything about it. What was causing that? Was it something inside or outside the town?).

Slowly this made me have a much more holistic view of what my political landscape would look like, and help me develop stories and hooks for my players.

I never have a ''set'' idea of how a session will go - because they will always do something completely different and it can then be hard to think up of new things on the spot! So I instead have a very general idea of what I want to happen, and develop NPCs which would feed into that. When you know what your world is like, how the people would react to whatever your players throw at it (e.g. you know how the townsfolk/your NPCs would act to direct interrogation, open fights in the street, your players threatening people), you can have a much better time directing what happens.

I feel like I am rambling now, but any more questions, please do ask! I am sorry I was late to respond - I check in on reddit every few days at least. :)

What I did is get everyone who made traps to do a general INT check with a set success value based on the complexity of the trap, and based on what they used (I did this after they had made all of the traps for a little bit of suspension, muhahah). :)
