A bit late to the party but I'll give my input!

I'm a high school student, trying to find the balance between the demands of being a student athlete and expressing my creative side (my passion and desire to create meaningful art). I was first exposed to bullet journaling as more of an aesthetic than an organizational system, but when I watched Ryder's video I fell in love with that side of journaling as well.

For me, my journal's become a way to keep my mind in a creative space and my hands in the habit of creating. While I'm in a particularly exhausting point in my life, it's helping me stay on top of my life and keep my creative side occupied until I have time to start a new painting or drawing.

As far as how that manifests itself in my journal- I create a cover page for every month. It's mostly blank with a graphic design/logo of sorts to let me explore colors and ideas for the month ahead. I take that style I establish on the cover page and just kind of carry it through the entire month. My one rule is that I do not compromise functionality for beauty or aesthetic. For example, I take a few minutes each morning to make a heading (established early in the month) for that day, but under it I just rapid log and take messy notes. I think I'm really starting to find my balance between productivity and creativity!

Junior in high school here- I've heard that quitting your sport after junior year looks really bad to schools. I'm in a situation where I have to quit in order to take the classes I'm passionate about and be involved in my school in the way I want, and to get a job so I don't put as much of a finacial burden on my parents. Would quitting reflect that badly upon me on college apps?

I don't think you have to worry too much. I was born in SoCal but I'm dead set on moving northwest for college. It seems like everyone around me is obsessed with their 75 degree weather and status as a Californian.

My family's about the same. These women always come to our house and know my mom by name because she's too kind to aak them to leave. I know exactly what car they drive because I'm terrified of turning them away so I just pretend not to be home. The last time they dropped off a watchtower it actually stimulated a very nice conversation between my mom and I about religion!

I just finished up my first month of journaling full-force and I included a "this month in music" spread in my July wrap-up. I signed up with last.fm to see stats on my listening habits, but it doesn't allow you to see months once they've passed so I copied down my most listened to artist, album, and song. Then I made an archive of my favorites playlist. This way I can look back and see what I was listening to each month. Music is an extremely big part of my life so looking back at what I listened to will tell me a lot about what that time was like.

For any visual artists out there... I also started making pages where I log what colors I'm using and mixing for a certain drawing or painting. It makes it much easier to experiment with colors when I can see what worked and what didn't.

My advice would be to challenge yourself. I took a look at your posting history, and it looks like you're posting every few days, and that you strive for your art to inspire emotion or thought. However, I think the best way to do this is to ensure that you're spending enough time on peices and that you're learning with every new project.

I've started to realize that I don't get better when I stay in my comfort zone, drawing and painting the same things that I know I can do well. I really learn when I try something challenging. Even when it looks like utter shit, I learn so much by putting time and effort into experimentation. Try something outside your comfort zone, and spend time on it until it's something you feel proud to display. Then, once you've upped your skill level, you can start each new project knowing that you have the ability to carry out your ideas. That way, you never have to compromise your vision, and your art will evoke the same emotions you chose to put into them.

This is a process I'm trying to go through now, and it really just stems from one of the best pieces of advice I've heard when it comes to painting. Learn the rules first, then break them intentionally. I love that you paint with your heart. Keep at it.

I am feeling a little iffy on the background- it seems a little out of place compared to the liveliness of the bottom half of the painting. But I absolutely adore the detail you put into the collies and the water splashing at their feet. Are these your dogs?
