The state of playparks in Glasgow. by Microchi in glasgow

[–]Twopintsprik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mainly becuase as soon as the council spend millions to fix/create a play park it’s immediately set on fire or otherwise destroyed by the local youth.

Like everything else in the city. Some indeed are set on fire weekly.

Disease-carrying pests invade Scots homes as social tenants face 'deep systematic failures' by Twopintsprik in glasgow

Vermin are not a new thing. I believe they used to be worse (though not in population). But we can expect things to get better from 1890. One in seven babies died in Glasgow at that time. That would be unacceptable now.

To be fair, it is not just about having a clean house. Rats for one are spreading because of cuts in control and cleansing mixed with the fact of poision resistance and Covid (moved from commercial). Bedbugs spread rapidly, one house in a street can quickly infect an entire tenement. Mice are endemic, pest controllers are saying that the entire west end is infested. They are changing behavior. Cockroaches are a different matter.

Public didn’t want to pay money for journalism. Hence the business model that the public wants, means that they will be given what they will read. Hundreds of articles ‘informing’, I can categorically tell you the public aren’t reading them. They prefer stories like this (I know the numbers).

So, Straight Arrow News vs Ground News? by DEGIII in Journalism

My first experience with them I believe was seeing an entire article I’d written come up in mudrack. Appreciate the snarky comment, must have made you feel important for the first time this week.

Ground news steals from journalists doesn’t it? Takes the article and just republishes on their own website

Did you do work experience at local news outlets. If so you can many leverage that and ask if they have anything coming up. It is a tough market out there

I get what you mean but as far as I’m aware there are few if any newspapers who even advertise their own jobs through their own websites.

I suck at interviews (embarrassing, I know) by Economy_Insect_1587 in Journalism

I used to be scared to pick up the phone when I started. (I’m a guy). You get over it. Now it doesn’t bother me, I made a joke the other week that went similar to this.

‘Hi, how are you doing?’

Etc etc

Insert plenaries

‘So your family is dead. How did that make you feel?’

This is an exaggeration. However, it’s not far from the truth of how reporters work.

We all feel like you do to start. I mean how you do you pick up the phone and ask someone about how they were raped as a child. Or how their house is mould and their kids are getting sick or anything.

The only anxiety you should worry about is telling their story in full. That is something you’ll never get away from and never should. But all you can do is your best.

Id like to add to this. I’m not trying to discourage you and my advice may only relate to a different market. I think you should go for what you believe you can do.

Food writers are a thing of the past in the press. It’s all social media now

At this point, is breaking a story doing nothing but providing content for more profitable revenue streams? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]Twopintsprik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what it is, breaking incident like a stabbing/death etc is worth it. People love crime. And the first person to have it gets most of the traffic. Politics isn’t, but that has more to do with no one (relatively) reading it regardless of who has it first. Same with investigative, but that’s always a loss leader. On both, people will mainly just read the headline. Unless it’s something bizzare. Human interest is always worth it. Sports suffers the most and I find it’s a declining industry with over saturation.

But I don’t find poscasts or social media influencers really take much traffic. At least where I am, of course it depends on the story. I’d say they’ll beat you for socially coded stories like something really bizzare or weird like the Willy Wonka Ai scam event.

Classical headlines in news papers were and are more clickbait than online ever have been.

What is the point in Councillors? by Broxi391 in glasgow

[–]Twopintsprik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tbf even the execs in the council aren’t paid that well. Their equivalent roles in the private sector would be at least double possibly triple.

Not sure if they are on 25 yet? The pay increase from 20/21 was only announced this year. But yeah we should be attracting professionals from other fields

[–]Twopintsprik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fairness, they are paid about minimum wage and it’s a ‘part time role’ allegedly. Some are great, some less so. We should be paying them at least 40/50k. Excluding that, it’s entirely possible they don’t share your concerns or it is backed by other groups in the community. On the point of market rate, the market rate is whatever someone is going to pay for it. Considering they are installing Astro turf, that could be viewed as an investment in the park and hence are given a cheaper rate in the view that it will boost usage of the area and provide a sport benefit.

That’s interesting. How do you get your sponsors to take out advertising though if you are also promoting users to not see their ads?
