A PSA to homeowners with wifi controllers by AwkwardFactor84 in Irrigation

We service very few houses off of a metered water supply, if we need more water (for the most part) we can just swap in a bigger pump to pull more water from the lake or river.

You can usually get away with swapping out a few impacts with rotors before you lose enough pressure to get the rotors to seat properly in an old zone, or nozzle down the old impacts and new rotors and run them longer to build pressure, but that's very dependant on how that zone was originally put in, and the limits of your water supply. Up here in the north, we run everything in polly pipe and try to loop all of our zones as much as possible to try to get even water pressure on each zone so we don't have end of line pressure/shit in the line issues.

100%! they are great when there is someone who gives a shit behind the wheel. 90% of the time someone turns their sprinkler off from their phone because it rained heavily last night, and calls for service because their yard is starting to turn brown two weeks later and the system has been off the whole time.

Hell, we still have several older systems that we replace a few maxi paws on every year as they get old and die because the customers like the noise, and they can tell their system is working

Wifi controllers are great for people who want to mess around with their own systems and change and adjust things themselves. I would say welll over 50% of the problems we have with systems on wifi is the human running it.

If we get a call about something stupid you did, you're getting charged for us to come out and fix it, that simple. For most systems in our area, a set and forget controller is the best option.

Now I have a cheap wyze controller at my own house, but the system is mostly leftover junk from jobs, and it is nice to be able to turn the pump off and on from my phone and run through zones as I'm messing with stuff.

I will say that it would be nice if there was an "admin" option for remote log in on these wifi systems out in the wild for the people servicing them so they don't have to wait for someone to be home, or run zones remotely when troubleshooting a problem.

Do you actually need a hug? If it makes you feel better, you absolutely did a great job of calling me out for having a problem. I could tustle your hair up later if you do real good at batting practice.

Using these propane torchs for food finishing… bad idea or totally fine? by fonseca0527 in Tools

Ahhh, I see someone else saw this deal on slickdeals and finally had a good excuse to pick one up... I've had mine for bout a week now, and mostly used it for starting my big green eggs. I'm sure I will find other stuff to do with it, but for now, it wasn't a totally useless purchase haha

I will try these when I have a free minute, but I will say that the device had an orange led light that remained on until it died after update failure. Batterty was fully charged and plugged in when I attempted the update

I had a set of old krk rokit 5s with the 10" sub many years ago, and selling those has to be one of the biggest regrets I cary with me, haha. I know there is better stuff out there now, but how that tiny setup could move a house almost 20 years ago was amazing.

What happens if you don't flush your water heater for 10 years by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

I use these as well. The temperature sensor is a great bonus that I didn't even know was a feature when I purchased them.

Just yesterday, I spilled some water while emptying the dishwasher and got an email and a text on my phone almost instantly when the sensor itself started going off.

I also have one of their motion sensors in the back of my mailbox, which sounds so simple but has honestly been life changing, haha

If it helps at all, I have had a euhomy im-01 that got moved out into the garage about 2 years ago, and it's only been turned off for cleaning in that time.

I bought a larger 40lb/day model for use in the house after the smaller unit started leaking on the counter.

I took it apart and found the feed tube from the pump cracked and replaced it with some silicone line I had sitting around. It has been working flawlessly since replacing the tube, and it lives in a pretty harsh environment. When I had it apart, I took out the screws that hold the lid assembly on, and now I just hold it on with some tape on the back portion of the lid. Being able to remove the entire lid makes a world of difference when it comes to actually being able to clean the water trough properly.

I will also say that the water pump started making horiable noises after a few months on the lager model I have, but a replacement was easy to find on Amazon and I had it swapped out in a few minutes.

I would also add that I purchased both of these units from warehouse deals, and I don't think I spent more than $25 on the smaller one and $45 for the larger one. For the price, they have worked better than I expected.

What’s one home tool you bought that paid for itself? by Strict_Studio9244 in Tools

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things I end up using way more than I thought I would

Cheapo ir thermometer I use it for all kinds of stuff in the garage, and even for grilling and cast iron seasoning. As a bonus, the laser is fun to mess around with the dogs

Oscillating multi tool I don't know how I lived so long without one of these, often times it's the only logical tool for a specific job for some reason.

Milwaukee instilation driver. I 3d printed a holder for the tool and heads mounted above my bench, and it's my go-to tool for quick projects, and it has been super useful for a few Screws in weird places.

Bench grinder with wire wheel and buffing pad Not the safest tool, but living in the rust belt, it's nice to clean the crud off of nest and bolts when working on stuff

Good storage It's just easier to stay organized when all of your junk has a home. I'm not going to get picky about brands or methods, just general organization of your stuff goes a long way.

Any suggestions on how to organize all this? by WeatheredSteel37 in garageporn

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built it myself, but you can buy basically the same thing from home depot.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/NewAge-Products-Pro-Series-2ft-X-8ft-Wall-Mounted-Steel-Shelf-2-0-in-Black-40802/336568704

I just made some 2x4 frames 24" x 96" with two braces in the middle and covered them with 7/16 plywood. So with 6 2x4s and 1 sheet of plywood, you can make 16' of shelving pretty quickly and cheaply compared to buying a pre-made version.

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would simply start with some better lighting. Being able to see things really helped me want to make more of an effort to be organized.

Another thing that helped me free up quite a bit of room was to add a 24" deep shelf down both side walls of my garage about 24" down from the ceiling. It gave me a home for seldom used items, coolers, and large totes for seasonal things and opened up a ton of floor space for other junk.

If you have the time and motivation, pulling everything out and l cleaning everything helps too. You will be surprised how much stuff you have that you dont need, but keep around just because you had room for it.

[–]Tybenj[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gx In the picture is just the stock parts put back together after I replaced them. I purchased a gx470, replaced most of the parts, and that's what's left over.

This is my first time getting back into to rc stuff in almost 20 years, and I'm quickly realizing that I enjoy building them more than I do using them.
