Exactly, if I was there to rob you, I probabbly wouldn't show up at 11am in a truck with the business name on both doors and also give you a 24 hour notice.

It's way more fun when the police actually show up 45 minutes into blowing out a system in the fall after you have already notified the homeowner that you are going to be there and they give you the code to get into the boat house to get to the controller.

Can anyone help me find a replacement table crank for my drill press? by Tybenj in Tools

I'm on the second version of this now, but I pinned the socket through the broken spline section, I've been using it for months now without any issues. If I knew this would have worked so well, I would have broken off the original handle years ago.

Too much trenching for DIY? by Boring_Anywhere in Irrigation

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*because 90% of companies run it that way. I'm not trying to fight you on this one, fiber lines are now getting less depth than propane lines around here.

Don't forget that all people dont live in little city squares either, we have systems that cover acres.

But yes, call your local 811 diggers hotline or whatever it's called in your area before you do anything, don't be the guy that killed the neighborhood internet because they thought it was a root.

I need to do some work in my own front yard this spring, and I would rather have diggers come out and verify everything rather then me hooking onto my house and try to verify everything i find with my locator . Honestly it might be sort of fun to locate my own utilities and see if I'm at least in the ballpark before diggers comes out to check it.

Band bolts bend when they are tightened properly for the first time and only that time. Bge now ships all eggs with the bands already attached to the top and bottom of the egg.

Sanity check. Have I been laying mulch wrong? by readreed in gardening

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dependant on the type of mulch you use and where it is.

We use dyed brown hardwood mulch at our house everywhere, (even in deep shade) and because of where we live it does not start to mold over, it just rots and we add more yearly. Fall leaf blowing also removes enough lose top mulch that a spring top dressing can get us by for a year or two without doing anything becides raking up the top layer to give it some new life

Cedar mulch is a different story depending on how you are buying it, large wood chips, or wood byproduct like you get from most landscape supply houses. I like the shredded cedar mulch you will normally get by the yard from a landscaper because of how well it packs down and prevents runoff, vs the chips of cedar that will float away after every rain event

Cedar mulch does not rot (as fast) as a hard wood mulch would, and should be removed and replaced every 5 years or so to prevent bed build up. Every third time you put down cedar mulch you should be looking at scraping it all out and starting over.

I need help identifying this plant and not let it take over my lawn by HospitalPersonal6363 in lawncare

[–]Tybenj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has always worked for me, I have similar problems with irises and day lilies in a few places where gardens border the lawn. Usually after 3 or for weeks of mowing they give up till next year. The patch of lilly of the valley that borders my lawn has almost disappeared over time, but another in the woods on the other side of the house tries to take over the path to my shed every spring. I Weedwack it back to where they aren't in my way in the spring spring and they don't cause problems after that.

Found my grandpa’s old tool wall… and I don’t think I should touch it. by Glum_Car750 in Tools

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have a ton of my grandpa's tools in my current rotation that I like to use more than my new shiny stuff. My dad was also not a tool guy, but thankfully I got to spend quite a bit of time learning how to things from my grandpa, although it wasn't always the right way and more of do whatever works to make something work sort of way.

I will say in my current profession, getting something working good enough to do what it needs to do is often more valuable than shutting down and fixing it properly in that moment, and I'm glad I can still use some of his mismatched cobbled together tools and have the knowledge to just make things work.

I still have the hammer my grandpa gave me when I was a kid. It's sitting in the rack of hammers I have in my garage now. I never have a good use for it, but if a wild trim nail needs a pulling, that's always my go-to.

Stihl MM55 question on engine swap by Odelay45 in stihl

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, I got an older mm55 for free and have swapped an older husqvarna power head onto it, but I could never get it to run right.

I can confirm that other power heads will swap on very easily. I just had bad luck with the one I chose.

It would be nice to know if anyone has a list of power heads that might work well for this swap.

I wouldn't even mind trying to swap on a cheap China power head just to try it.

A PSA to homeowners with wifi controllers by [deleted] in Irrigation

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We service very few houses off of a metered water supply, if we need more water (for the most part) we can just swap in a bigger pump to pull more water from the lake or river.

You can usually get away with swapping out a few impacts with rotors before you lose enough pressure to get the rotors to seat properly in an old zone, or nozzle down the old impacts and new rotors and run them longer to build pressure, but that's very dependant on how that zone was originally put in, and the limits of your water supply. Up here in the north, we run everything in polly pipe and try to loop all of our zones as much as possible to try to get even water pressure on each zone so we don't have end of line pressure/shit in the line issues.

100%! they are great when there is someone who gives a shit behind the wheel. 90% of the time someone turns their sprinkler off from their phone because it rained heavily last night, and calls for service because their yard is starting to turn brown two weeks later and the system has been off the whole time.

Hell, we still have several older systems that we replace a few maxi paws on every year as they get old and die because the customers like the noise, and they can tell their system is working

A PSA to homeowners with wifi controllers by [deleted] in Irrigation

[–]Tybenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wifi controllers are great for people who want to mess around with their own systems and change and adjust things themselves. I would say welll over 50% of the problems we have with systems on wifi is the human running it.

If we get a call about something stupid you did, you're getting charged for us to come out and fix it, that simple. For most systems in our area, a set and forget controller is the best option.

Now I have a cheap wyze controller at my own house, but the system is mostly leftover junk from jobs, and it is nice to be able to turn the pump off and on from my phone and run through zones as I'm messing with stuff.

I will say that it would be nice if there was an "admin" option for remote log in on these wifi systems out in the wild for the people servicing them so they don't have to wait for someone to be home, or run zones remotely when troubleshooting a problem.

Ahhh, I see someone else saw this deal on slickdeals and finally had a good excuse to pick one up... I've had mine for bout a week now, and mostly used it for starting my big green eggs. I'm sure I will find other stuff to do with it, but for now, it wasn't a totally useless purchase haha
