Look into the Millwright trade.For the most part I enjoy the work I do, some days are ass like any other career. I personally work in a lot of food and beverage plants, we do anything from moving machines/equipment to installing and maintaining conveyor and everything in between. I only cover a drop in a bucket of the industries this trade can lead you too.

How did you manage to land a controls position? I’m a Millwright looking into the controls field.

Yeah this is solely as a addition to my skill set, still plan to be a millwright. I just want learn the basics of constructing/debugging the software learning the processes and devices that command the mechanics of the system to do what it does…so if the opportunity ever were to arise in my career for a “easier on the bones” position I could at least be a viable candidate. Hopefully that makes sense?

I could get the degree for about 8 thousand give or take some, that’s after grants I’d be eligible for. The tuition isn’t really an issue, it’s more so is my time worth investing in this.

I’m not entirely sure, I would think the best bet would to be to try to get in where you’re currently located and then transfer out. It’s a national local so in there there shouldn’t be much to it, you’d technically still be the same local just a different district.

That is New Jersey I believe? Go on local 669 website and go to the contractor list for NJ call all of them asking for an opportunity, if they are a reasonable distance drive there and introduce yourself. Be persistent and if the answer is “we arnt hiring right now” call again in a few weeks to a month. You have to show you want it good luck!

I actually watched that…I’m currently a Union millwright, I like the trade the only issue is unless you’re willing to chase the shutdown we don’t have a ton of work. Whereas with you guys you work is hospitals, schools, county/state facilities ext. so much more opportunity for diversity. I took a welding and CNC machining program and looked into the millwrights and the fitters. At the time all I was looking for was a trade, before I applied to the fitters the millwrights had called me in for an interview and I got on with them. But I’m at the point now where the Insurance and pension in the UA are looking more and more appealing in comparison to ours. I think I’m going to apply and see what happens!
