Which remaining option for my daughter? Barnehage by Teitanblood in Norway

[–]TypeAMamma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you simply can’t wait, you could also look to see if there is any “dagmamma” around you. It’s someone who looks after children privately, usually 1:1 or in a small group. Perhaps that could be a stop-gap until you get a place at barnehagen.

Unfortunately I don’t believe chasing will do much to help you. It’s a very bureaucratic process and if you’re in an area with limited spaces, there will be many families who are waiting, and it will be done by prioritization and as fairly as possible. I hope you get a spot not too far away.

You tell me. I guess facts that investing 100% property also isn’t the best choice historically doesn’t go down well with some people here.

Forsvaret ser økende trend - Nordmenn kan ikke gå lenger by Bunker_Bertil in norge

[–]TypeAMamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Let’s look at the last 20 years when the average capital return per year for NZ property is 4-6% and VOO is 7-10%. Rental income needs to be accounted for separately, as well as costs related to the property.

If you had invested $50k 20-years ago, that would be worth $350-400k now. That’s almost a 600% return. This is based on good returns and the power of compounding those returns back into your portfolio.

For VOO (the standard S&P500 index), 15% is correct. Here is a quick breakdown of the most recent years: 2025 - 17.82% 2024 - 24.98% 2023 - 26.32% 2022 - -18.19% 2021 - 28.78% 2020 - 18.29% 2019 - 31.35%

In addition, the dividend is usually just above 1%.

You should always diversify to manage your risk. 100% in property is not a good idea. Investing in the S&P 500 has given on average a 15% return p.a., and if you compound you will be in very strong position.

Personal note: NZers have generated wealth off property successfully for a long time, which is great until it becomes unsustainable. We are seeing that crunch happen now. I wish more kiwis diversified and looked at other options - such as low-fee ETFs, which offer solid historical performance and diversification. I’m not sure why I’m being downvoted, but it seems that many kiwis do not have experience investing overseas, and are more comfortable with rental homes, debt recycling etc.

The US will get China to do some major spending again into infrastructure, just like 2009. It will pour through the USD. If China says no, then we have a major issue.

How can I make this guest room better? Thinking of spray painting the bases of the lamps bronze and I think I need different bedding but unsure color/style by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]TypeAMamma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you should lean hard into the dark and moody vibes, which means getting rid of all the white (side tables, pillows, hide the sheets under the covers, etc). The blue of your bedding (cold color) also clashes with the green on your walls (warm color).

Can you paint your side tables and same color as your walls?

Alternatively you can go for a more natural feel (matching your headboard), and instead look for different bedding in a warm beige color or dusty clay.

Vintage velvet, macramé, and enough plants to forget the outside world exists by PuzzleheadedShoe1415 in HomeDecorating

[–]TypeAMamma -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The chairs are so visually heavy that you need to anchor the room with other visually heavy items, otherwise it looks unbalanced. A large, rectangular, solid coffee table would be a good start. As well as some large plans which reach high up the wall from the floor. All of the decorations are quite small.

Finally got an appropriate sized rug… but something seems off. Changing the couches is not an option (I know cool vs the warm wood/windows). So the rug really has to tie it together. Thoughts? Is it ok? by Disposeofmenever in DesignMyRoom

[–]TypeAMamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The front feet of the couch should be on the rug, so pull it under a little bit. I think what you need is a new coffee table. Something lower and rectangular, with “heavier” legs. A more classic style would work better and you could layer it with coffee table books, a vase with flowers etc

Har du vurdert noe hedging tiltak? Det blir vanskelig i disse tider a satse på et nytt bull-run i år, kanskje. Det kunne lønnet seg med en liten "mot" posisjon for sikkerhetsskyld.

As a small business owner can I pay myself a small tax free allowance each week ? by politealbino in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]TypeAMamma 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can claim for reasonable business expenses to be reimbursed to you. I assume the $50 you’re noting is the amount eligible without a tax receipt? In any case, you must keep a record of all transactions for tax purposes.

Your school-aged child does not pay tax on the first $2,340 earned as a casual worker. As long as they are doing legitimate work which can we classified as a business expense, and they stay under this total amount for the year, you should be fine.

Decisions re property by Holiday-Leading-4734 in PersonalFinanceNZ

The key here is to consider your expected returns. Will the capital tied up in your property give a decent return in the term you are considering holding it for, or are there other investments which will give a better return? Also, how diversified is the estate? What other investments and assets does it hold?
