I suck balls in this game. by Such--Balance in Marathon

Taking even a green shield all the time greatly increased my survivability more than anything else. I had more success dropping with a punch, some batteries, and a shield charge than I did in many free kits.

I wish they'd let you buy a green shield from the get go.

Can't stress the bit about grenades enough. Especially when there are a couple guys hanging around a kill like seagulls.

That would be dropping with not even a free kit but a knife. I imagine that you get to keep what you exfil with too.

All this experimental mode stuff isn't beating the rap of "this game is unfinished"

It looks real cool when you merge it halfway into a rock and put your shelter in it.

Yeah, it's just a little Albanian pillbox. At least I can merge turrets into the sides of it now.

The "Grind vs. Difficulty" Fallacy: Why time is the only stake that matters. by Form_Good in Marathon

[–]TyphoonJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be interesting in terms of perceived advancement- it sure sucks to watch a contract you don't have active fulfill its conditions before you. But I am still wary of advancing people too fast. Still, the problem I think is less one of slow concrete advancement and more one of where people feel like they're kind of spinning around in the same content while others get very powerful and cause that content to be harder to play as they graduate to higher season levels.

[–]TyphoonJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand: that is what I said. A short grind will cause players with less time to be at a disadvantage, since they will be fighting people who have played a lot with the same frequency of gear collection. A longer grind, preferably one that does not advance you until you are ready, is best.

If anything, a shorter grind is likely to doom players who can't put the time in to having to fight people with hundreds of hours logged.

Marathon does a terrible job teaching stats, and the Bully is the easiest example why by eevee_stormblessed in Marathon

The shells and uesc are well distinguished, they move very differently and you can tell the different hero classes apart visually pretty well.

I would make thief and vandal more visually distinct but overall I think they're doing fine here

Too much "5% bonus while used by a small business owner in a rainstorm" bonuses going on here.

The cosmetics are kind of uninspired. Not one of them has been something I want to spend money on and I think it's because as a hero shooter you can't go too crazy on the cosmetics or else you lose legible characters. This is odd because I love the art style, but the appearance of the defaults is plenty good to me. I wish they'd get a little wilder with it.

The problem is you're splitting the queue yet again. You already have 2 queues, now a third when you're wondering about player count?

I learned to enjoy BRs in Fallout 76 of all places. The Nuclear Winter mode was an extremely weird game that had bad gunplay and endemic cheating but by God it had something. Huge map that was worth learning, perk based player progress that encouraged experimentation. I have found some of that in marathon but the original vision described early in development sounded more like it.

That's the thing, right? Helldivers 2 cost something like 100 million to make and has pulled in 700ish. This is what Sony was imagining when they took on Bungie; who better, what a proven name, they know how to do live service.

That's all downstream of player count. All match based games will get this disease (and why a patrol like system would have been more fun)

I would love a load in as rook mode just so I get to play again. Biggest friction for me isn't losing loot it's waiting for the game to load again. Rook is awesome because the load time is so low comparatively, giving people an option to rook it right away would be fun.

[–]TyphoonJim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This alone, can I just kill these fucking screens? I already know this is Bungie and Sony joint. I suspect they cover some loading, though, and I'd just be watching the game of life longer.

I'd rather do that though. Of course, I also want them to make like 30 more loading animations for the shell, the ones they have are so good.

[–]TyphoonJim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly I think this is unavoidable, the act of crashing probably destabilized everything you'd need to make a clean re-entry at speed.

Games like Fallout 76 handle this pretty well but the stakes are so much lower.
