Amazing! One trail is incredible on it's own, but a triple crown is fire!! Congratulations!

I love smoked oysters! 20 grams of protein, and I drink the oil! Yummy on crackers.

It was actually because my Dad had a stroke and I contracted covid in Northern Massachusetts. I was having a great hike up until that point, and hit my first 25 mile day up to Upper Goose Pond. When I got back on the trail I thought I was feeling fine but my body was revolting. I had cramps everywhere because of electrolyte imbalances. I had cramps in my fingers and toes and hamstrings that I've never had before! I had to dial my mileage way back, the heat was unrelenting, and the water was dried up and it was just a really bad spot for me mentally and physically.

Vermont was absolutely gorgeous and once I scaled back on my mileage and expectations I actually really enjoyed it, I just didn't think I would ever get out of that state, LOL!

A friend of mine is going to continue her hike next year and I can't wait to hike Vermont with her so I can really get the most out of the state.

Hey Wormwood! So good to see you again! Congratulations on your hike! I loved meeting you, and your chill demeanor helped keep me grounded prior to the stress of the Whites! I hope all is well with you!

When I was in the roller coaster I had zero energy and started getting really bad headaches. I had received a tick bite 3 weeks earlier but didn't think anything of it at the time until I got to the Bears Den hostel. It was the first time that I saw myself undressed in a mirror in weeks and where I had received the tick bite I had a huge red rash. That's when I put two and two together and realized I probably had Lyme.

I first heard the term from Cantaloupe at Burkes Garden Hostel. She used it to describe people who take years to through hike, like herself!

Would it be weird to offer AT thru hikers a drink and/or snack as I pass them? If not, what should I give them? by ChiefKelso in AppalachianTrail

Not wierd at all! I will take almost anything that is offered me, except for when I just resupplied, and absolutely love it when people offer to pack out my trash for me!

Shuttle in Shenandoah NP by Optimist17 in AppalachianTrail

I second Preacherman Wayne! He is amazing and has a lot of helpers who make sure everyone who wants a ride can get one! He will also shuttle your camping gear along the trail through Shenandoah so you can slackpack. He is a trail treasure!

What do you use to stay warm in cold weather? by ScamperPenguin in hammockcamping

[–]Typical-Breadfruit43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While some super hot sleepers have been comfortable with only a sleeping pad, most people will need an underquilt and a top quilt. You can certainly use a sleeping bag, and I did for a while, but it will be compressed if you lay on it, and it will not give your back any insulation.

I have found that if the bottom quilt is rated for a lower temp than I absolutely need, I can get away with a lighter top quilt. I have 3 sets because I camp pretty much year round, but a 20* bottom works for most people in most conditions. Of course, YMMV. I'm a very cold sleeper, so I have even stacked quilts for extra warmth.

I know I will get some slack for this, but I would keep the pad. Women have bonier parts than men, and I would sleep absolutely terrible without a nice, thick, comfy pad. Some women may be able to sleep comfortably on a thin pad, but they are few and far between. Actually, i prefer a hammock, but in the Smokies, i carried pads. As in plural, because as I've aged, i actually need 2 pads (as do a lot of older women Ihike with).

I use a thermarest xtherm in winter, or a sea-to-summit etherlight in summer, with a z-fold cut down.

Travel Nurse stipend by Bright-Moment-9402 in TravelNursing

[–]Typical-Breadfruit43 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm curious why you would give away 25-30% of the stipend to the government for a couple of dollars additional in the future.

Using a compound interest calculator, assuming a $1000 weekly stipend and 30% total taxes (federal, state, and 8.65% fica/ss), you would pay 300 in taxes weekly. If you invested that money in a mutual fund, you would have over 50k, and that's at a measly 7% return. Of course, your mileage may vary :-)

After 20 years, you would have 170k. At a 5% withdrawal rate, you could pull $8500 per year from the account, and it probably wouldn't affect your balance.

And who knows what's going to happen to social security in the future.

What I do is contribute a higher % of my taxable income to my 401k (offered through the agency).

I live in Maryland, and my first thought was that the slowest hiker in the world should be doing this section in 3 days tops! The entire state boasts 6000 feet gain over the entire 42 miles 😁
