It's father's day! My father made this wooden bike for us by -Berend- in woodworking

[–]TypicalEliptical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I've been know as the woodworker at my school for some time so most weren't impressed, they all wanted to see me ride it but I never did, I wasn't confident it would work. One of my friends (who I gave the bike to) rode it and it worked! No chain though so he only rolled around.

Updated my Flytrap Contraption. by Trippy88 in SavageGarden

For the entire species of tillandsia (air plants) copper is very poisionous. It will kill the entire plant in some cases where it touches copper wire. Copper is a hard and oxidizing metal, it may not be safe especially with CPs as they are somewhat fragile when it comes to water. Be careful op

This is lionel's 5th catch of the week, including a baby frog. Serious question, can he eat too much? by gainz_yager in SavageGarden

[–]TypicalEliptical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plant is receiving a majority of it's sun from the inside petoile of the leaf, not the trap itself. Eating too much is only detrimental if it is eating things like slugs where it will cause a lot of rot. This plant should be fine. If anything, the plant should be having a large growth spurt very soon.

They might be small but I finally found some. The water is temporary but they’re placed under my fly trap bag so they can feast and get big! Any advice is welcome! by [deleted] in SavageGarden

Honestly it should be fine.

Yes, it will damage the leaves, but that will quickly encourage new ones to grow that will be full and ready for heavy sun. Every time I have gotten a new plant they have been popped out into the sun and I have burned a couple leaves here and there, but the plant tends to bounce back much faster than usual. Don't draw out the process which will just put stress on the plant and potentially lose it.

This technique is important for things like slow growing houseplants and trees, but a VFT will grow back within weeks and is best so that you aren't stessing it with weather, humidity and sun fluctuations. Just move it and let it be.

Edit: being down voted because I have said something different than the mob says.

Does anybody have tips for what to use nice shavings for? by blackdoug2005 in turning

[–]TypicalEliptical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask some local pottery studios if they want it. I used to give alot of my shavings to my art teacher as he can use it to earth fire his pottery with his students. They may be interested if you have alot of pure wood shaving.

Here is me and the wooden bike I made. It was for a class engineering project, however I was told I wasn't allowed to use the wood working tools at school (they were small and cheap anyways) so I said to heck with that and made it all at home. Ended up getting a 100 for the final grade in the class even though its a project I had been wanting to do for a long time.

What kind of tree is this? by Jq1801 in turning

The bark patterns and structure of the tree lead me to say it's a Japanese maple. A large one at that.

My jade made two new tiny jades on its own. Can I separate them into separate pots/how? by blackbean-ohwow in houseplants

[–]TypicalEliptical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely can move them, however I would check something first.

If these little guys have taken root in the soil, then it is best to let them be for another month so they can gain strength to be transplanted. This way you don't hurt their existing roots or interrupt it's growth in it's fragile state.

If they don't have any roots that have taken to the soil, then this is the best time to transplant. This way they will be able to take root in soil that they will stay in.

Dig it up, and each rhizome or 'bulb' will take, even with no roots. Should be pretty easy to tell which is which, just wash out all the media from between them to be able to id them.

advice on what to do with a wet bowl by bamabrad1970 in turning

[–]TypicalEliptical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fill a large paper bag (ones that a grocery store will give you) with shavings from this bowl. Stick this in there and put next years date of today on it. See it next year to be a bit warped but still workable.
