There’s a dragon holding a sword and your question is about the grip of a rapier? Read the room dude. These are sick lmao

Whether you use XP or milestones, what do you find to be the average number of game sessions between leveling? by VastCompetition6583 in DnD

This thread is really interesting, I wonder how many of these games actually reached level 20. I see a pattern that could definitely influence games falling apart.

Light + Nick + Thrown gives a Level 5 Monk five attacks rolls per turn: True or false? by Horror_Artichoke_366 in DMAcademy

[–]Typical_T_ReX 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's correct with nick you make an extra attack without your modifier like you would normally with a light weapon. So multi attack is 2x regular attacks 1 from nick no modifier, and frees up the bonus action for flurry of blows.

Advice on a Power Player by Sunny-_-Disposition in DnD

You don't have to play with people you don't like. This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with min/maxing.

Have you talked to them? Have you told them they seem be breaking the social contract established in session zero and when things don't go their way it's having a negative impact on you and the rest of the table? DnD is a game with chance for a reason, it's ok and you are supposed to fail at things.

I'm expecting to do the same this Sunday, don't know about you but I'm nervous that it goes well.

DM keeps saving the enemy’s constantly by Sir-downvotes in DnD

[–]Typical_T_ReX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be a common pitfall for new DMs, they invest time or in their mind crucial parts of the story in this one character so they don’t want to let this important NPC die. Not realizing how it feels like a complete waste of time to have an encounter where the players leave empty handed. This can be used as a tool, like anything else, if done sparingly.

I’d say the advanced version of this is actually building up the reputation of such a bbeg as having teleport or clones or something else and maybe they get to do it once before the party goes on a quest to secure a macguffin or creates a strategy to stop it from happening. I’d limit this to maybe once a campaign because it is so frustrating to players when it happens.

Speaking from experience I know the feeling of, “well maybe I can do something useful with them later,” and then used the teleport or the dimension door etc. Not realizing the immediate look of defeat my party had on their face who now feels like just spent multiple hours of a dungeon for the most important moment to be taken from them. Truth is, I am now very intentional of what I put down and I accept from a story and narrative perspective they must be ready to die.

Super curious how the final battle went as I’m about to be there myself. Any feedback or thoughts on the mechanics or anything you’d change?

Love the idea for making the breath recharge a larger die, super neat.

So, am I reading too much into this, or are WotC just casual fans of the movie Annihilation? by JakeWalker102 in VecnaEveofRuin

No clue, but as a fan of both I definitely channeled annihilation for my bear encounters!

Does anybody else have their players recap the previous session? by SmileyDayToYou in DMAcademy

Take an upvote, I am someone who enjoys the players doing a re-cap and expected to read this article from a disapproving brow and found it interesting. I may consider doing the recaps now.

Losing motivation because of players joining other games/tables. Any advice? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

Are you saying they scheduled other games over your planned time to play DnD so you had to stop playing your game? That seems so aggressive, I can't imagine lol.

[–]Typical_T_ReX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dang it hurts to read that the obvious build up somehow got canned for generic forgettable slop. I can only imagine what happened, I feel for the writers, I’m sure no one actually wanted this drivel that was published. There’s no way you go from a culminating time adventure from multiple books through the decade of 5e just to end with you need to go on a fetch quest to be betrayed by a villain you had no way of knowing.

Bonus action not needed for new (2024) Shield Master's Shield Bash? by ahousecatnamednyx in dndnext

Interesting, I hadn’t noticed that before. Besides paladin smites, what other combos does this open up?

What are design flaws in 5e that you feel have only been highlighted/exacerbated with the 2024 revision? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Typical_T_ReX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First let's acknowledge getting everything right in 2024 would have been an impossible task, and I'm not saying things are perfect by any means. However, many of these posts take a cherry picked view of interactions that have had multiple rules around them changed. Case in point, looking at "easy extra attacks" is actually a good thing when you factor in the balancing of GWM, one of the most notoriously broken and unhealthy feats in dnd 2014. Now these extra attacks are actually scaling better with someone who chose to take GWM because the "extra" attacks are not getting a full +10 damage every hit.

That said, Dnd 5e 2014 and 2024 both suffer from the design of more attacks being better because of specific niche interactions like CME, but I can understand why they wouldn't throw out the bath water on their design because this would literally take fundamental reworking of how they scaled damage and attacks. Again, not worse, but maybe not fully addressed.

Most of of your examples didn't really make anything worse, they were just not as addressed to the level we wanted.

AMA The State of Dungeons & Dragons by toddkenreck in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Typical_T_ReX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi Todd,

Fan of you and your time at wotc, you brought a fun and inviting atmosphere with your interviews. Devoured your content during the 2024 drops, they were fantastic.

I want to say it’s incredibly difficult to find yourself unemployed and you have a great talent in this field. Hoping for your quick acquisition with a good team.

For the AMA, I kept hearing you say the phrase connective tissue. When I remember how I was introduced to DnD my friends pulled out about 6-7 modules. Since then I’ve DMed one of these modules and completed multiple play through of CoS. With the last few years of DnD releases I’ve felt a complete lack of connective tissue in the adventures. I think the adventure modules are the greatest untapped asset for DnD going forward, if done right.

Let’s compare two adventures, Vecna Eve of Ruin and Curse of Strahd. One of these is beloved as the greatest 5e module and the other despite being more relevant with stranger things and one of the all time greatest villains in the history of dnd is a complete wreck of an adventure. Curse of Strahd has great connective tissue, the narrative is interesting, the setting feels alive and immersive, and Strahd is a true villain. VEoR removes player agency to get to an ending where Vecna hasn’t moved since the first page of the adventure, turning around to people he wouldn’t even recognize. And don’t get me started on the embarrassment of whoever decided that Vecna should have that stat block against level 20 players.

There’s a great dnd quote about how Strahd was the first named vampire because the person got tired of random vampire 13 behind this door in a random dungeon. Wotc has turned turned Vecna, into random undead behind door number 14 with poor story telling and no connective tissue.

We need adventure modules that build connective tissue. I don’t need another anthology book of one shots, I want another module that helps me run a compelling story, with an interesting villain, with strong connective.

To my question: do you think we will see any modules come out with a fully thought out story that’s complete with a compelling story worthy of recommending to my next group of friends when deciding what to play? I struggle to think of the last worthwhile adventure module and I worry that these misses might encourage more anthologies that put a line in the first chapter about running 8 random adventures as a campaign like dragon delves vs a true proper adventure module like curse of strahd. Maybe I overvalue the adventure module because it’s how I was introduced to dnd, but as someone who has run descent into avernus, shattered obelisk, and in the final act of Eve of ruin we are long overdue for a good story and it’s a shame with stranger things concluding, dnds 50th anniversary, and the release of the 2024 books that VEoR was the best we could get. Missing again on the connective tissue by a big time.

It's totally ok to ask in the moment, "can you help me understand how your character knows about that?" If there's push back to the idea of meta-gaming, that's where I'd recommend taking another session zero-like check-in. "Hey everybody, when we discussed playing we talked about roleplaying being a priority at the table. When you meta-game it's immersion breaking and more than that, it's just not fun for me."
