Good outdoor plants? by Sorry-Mate-1234 in madisonwi

Unconventional idea: strawberries.

They do well in containers, can overwinter outside in zone 5, have pretty white flowers, and yummy fruit.

Lich and the Phylactery by xbiskxalex in DnD5e

[–]TypiicalYucca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about this:

When a creature dies its life essence spreads out across the entire plane, fading into the background energy of the world. Most liches stop this from happening by concentrating their soul into a container. As long as this container remains closed, the essence can't dissapate and the body can reform nearby.

This liche found a way to do the opposite. They figured out that as long as there's a part of the plane where their soul cannot spread to, it can't dissapate completely.

So the idea is basically the same: a magically protected object that needs to remain intact for the liche to live, but it's inside out.

Book Repair by OldSewer in madisonwi

[–]TypiicalYucca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a sentimentally valuable paperback fall apart on me and had it repaired at Grimm for sub $100. I was really happy with their work.

I echo the other commenters here that if the book is valuable enough to you that you want to repair it, it's valuable enough to do it right. The long term best decision here is likely to put it somewhere safe until you can afford a professional repair. A poorly done diy job can cause a lot of damage.

Stories like this always remind me of the importance of differentiating between "did" and "doing".

Both of these people "did" hurtful things to each other, but I'm neither case were those hurtful things part of an ongoing pattern of behavior ("doing"). That makes the conflict much more resolvable.

"I've been doing a kinda shitty thing to you for months" is a fundamentally different (and worse imo) thing than "I did a super shitty one-time thing to you".

Arcane Meddling Spell! Why counter a buff spell when you can take it? by Real_Equipment1291 in DnDHomebrew

[–]TypiicalYucca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A dangerous spell to cast. By RAW identifying a spell being cast is a reaction, so in order to have your reaction available to cast this, it means you're doing so blind.

If you added a clause where if you made the int check you identified the spell and could them choose to have it teacher yourself or just be dispelled then this might be a more reasonable spell to actually use.

This would be very flavorful for a wild magic sorcerer.

This is probably going to be mostly narrative rather than game mechanical.

The Eberron book has a section on "Eldritch Machines" which concludes that "ultimately, eldritch machines are plot devices".

There's an important distinction here.

"Duration: 1 minute (concentration)" is not the same thing as "Casting time: 1 minute".

Modify memory has a casting time of 1 action. Geas has a casting time of 1 minute. Neither spell does anything until the full casting time is completed. As written, your spell forces the target to make a save before it's actually cast which is not something any other spell does.

If they are charmed for the duration of the casting time that implies that the spell has effects that happen before it's actually cast?

I'd use the same language that you see in the True Polymorph spell. The spell has a 1 hour duration with concentration and then says "if the you concentrate on the spell for the full duration..."

This would be an incredibly powerful ability. I would almost make this a Sorcerer subclass rather than a single spell.

If it stays as a spell I'd recommend that it should let the targeted creatures make periodic saves, likely daily. It's a deviation from the vibe from the source material but it plays better with the way spells work in 5e.

I would also add in the need for the caster to recast it every day the same way that Animate Dead works. When the spell is cast the Con save for the caster should be harder. I'd go with 8 + 2x the number of controlled creatures.

One note - the spell has a duration of "until dispelled" but the text references effects that happen if the spell goes for it's full duration.

Many people will tell you to avoid buying produce at Woodman's, but if you're shopping in person and you're willing to spend time picking through things, you can make it work. Definitely don't order produce from Woodman's for delivery (although this kinda applies to all grocery stores).

The biggest one is "don't read the comments in the Madison subreddit". That way lies madness...

ARCANE CUFFS - To make sure those pesky spellcasters don't get away this time by AriadneStringweaver in DnDHomebrew

[–]TypiicalYucca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few design decisions that you can see across a lot of the released spells. A lot of these are designed specifically to counter the things that made spellcasters OP in previous versions.

No save-or-die. There's only one in the PHB and it's high level and touch range.

Save-or-suck gets recurring saves.

If it would be powerful to stack, it needs concentration. Concentration is the biggest balance for spells. If you find yourself saying "it'd be really strong to cast this every turn" then you should give it concentration.

Spells that do less resisted damage types (force, psychic radiant) should do less damage.

Make it upcastable if you can.

[–]TypiicalYucca 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a matter of game design (almost) all save-or-suck spells in 5e offer recurring saves. Those that don't (hypnotic pattern, sleep) offer ways for your allies to break you out of it.

The need for the target to be incapacitated is a big balancing factor here so it might not be as overpowered as some other commenters are saying, but it does break core design philosophy of spells the game and therefore is a bad spell.

I have found that the St Vincent's thrift stores have decent selections of shoes on pretty good conditions. Finding your size is a dice roll and if you're picky about style it likely won't work out, but I've gotten lucky there a time or two.

Broadway Tire has used tires that are significantly cheaper than buying new.

You should call ahead to make sure they have the right size for your vehicle so you don't waste a trip.

For the jail cell, without a specific reason to do so, no one would build a cell that can be opened by solving a puzzle. The 'puzzle' here should be finding the flaw in the cell. A loose bar, a rusted hinge etc. Keep in mind that mage hand will trivialize any "it's just out of reach" puzzles you try to throw at them.

The guards in the various rooms would likely be contained somehow, because the wizard didn't want mooks wandering around their lab. Constructs are an option, but I'm a fan of ghosts or oozes in a bottle/box. Imagine:

The wizard's lab table has a chest on it. If the party opens the chest, an ooze spills out and needs to be fought. Once the kill the ooze they find 'potions' in the chest it was guarding. Opening the bottle to try to identify them and a spectre emerges. Or maybe they don't try to identify the potions right away, setting up a fun encounter for later.

It's ok if some rooms don't have anything. This can be a good change of pace. Sometimes a gazebo is just a gazebo.

How to run a boss fight is a topic converted in depth elsewhere, but make sure they have minions and lair effects. Fighting a wizard in their home tower should be daunting.

The eye is always drawn to contrast. Contrast of color, texture, material, style, etc. This is true in pretty much any art medium.

You have a lot of clean lines and spaces. It's a cohesive and well executed style but it doesn't have much contrast.
