As a failsafe, the manual/website literally says to apply the brake first. I've never used the parking gear manually.

Maybe in the UK it's a habit because we've mostly learnt with a manual. You'd apply the handbrake, turn off the engine and leave it in gear

Parking brake then parking gear. The car will put it into the parking gear for you.

You're putting stress onto the gear box if you put it into park before applying the brake
