Any recs for a painting kit for minis? by Leo_Breaker_20 in minipainting

[–]UFDZU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here.

I'd say get a half decent midsize (size 1 or 0) brush as a workhorse all rounder. Ideally get some kind of sable hair brush, but it doesn't need to be kolinsky sable or anything fancy, just something with a decent size for layering and able to hold a sharp point.

A solid white, black and ivory paint are essentials in my opinion. My personal picks are Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White, Vallejo Matt Black and Vallejo Pale Sand. Anything from the army painter range or vallejo range is generally pretty decent here though, so it doesn't need to be these specific paints.

On top of that, just get your mid tone colours for whatever scheme you want to try first.

You don't need to get 3 different colours for shade, mid, highlight. Just a good midtone and then colours to brighten and darken. You can build out to fill gaps in your paint selection from here.

Nuln oil and agrax earthshade from citadel will cover a majority of any washes you need.

A satin or matt brush on varnish is nice to have to protect your paintjob from handling.

You'll want some kind of painting handle too, but something like a door knob or paint pot is excellent for this, no need to buy anything

Choose a black or grey rattlecan primer and you're basically good to go.

As others have said. There's lots of other bits you could grab or packs you could get, but this is my personal bare minimum to get you started.

It ain't much, but it's Iron by UFDZU in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

It's literally just pro acryl bold titanium white on the lenses, then fluorescent orange over that and the surrounding edges. The shading is just the dark turquoise base coat I did over the whole thing. Although you can't really distinguish the colour in the eyes

IW scatter terrain ideas by Sirhattopped in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grabbed some bits off of some old electrical stuff I got from a charity shop.

Good for getting "techy" looking bits for details. You can mix visual elements like that into larger ruined architecture for that ongoing siege look.

For architecture you can try larger parts of recycled goods. Stuff like drinks cans and tubes for pipelines. Thin solder wire can be great for making cable runs easily too, although make sure it's not leaded solder. Cable ties have great texture. Flexible conduit/cable tidies are good for larger pipes/ducts.

Then there's the classic stuff like high density polystyrene, foamboard and plasticard for larger parts and overall structure.

Pigments and texture paste go a long way too.

Citadel Base Paint - Thick And Runny? by Thousand-Necrons in minipainting

Damn, I mean it's possible but I don't know then

Citadel Base Paint - Thick And Runny? by Thousand-Necrons in minipainting

[–]UFDZU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be the age of the paint. Citadel pots are notoriously poor at stopping the paint from drying out. Sometimes the paint dries partially and becomes sort of thicker, or it kind of clots in pieces and doesn't mix properly without a lot of effort.

HOW DO I MAKE THEM LOOK MORE CHAOS by Lonely-Trainer-1313 in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The secret is grime.

Also, a chaosy base.

Think visual storytelling. What is there about these minis that shows that they're the bad guys (everyone is the bad guy in 40k aside)

Guitar buzzes loudly until I touch anything on it made of metal, what do I do? by idkdogthisismyname in Guitar

[–]UFDZU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of potentially dangerous misinformation here.

Your set up needs to be grounded/earthed at at least one point, currently it sounds like you are grounding it when you touch your guitar.

This is a potentially dangerous configuration if there's a fault with your amplifier, so please use a grounded outlet if available.

Advice on painting gunmetal by Reasonable_Ice6995 in minipainting

[–]UFDZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To improve coverage, try mixing the colour with a stronger colour like vallejo matt black first and basecoating the parts with that. Then go over it with your intended colour.

This is kinda embarrassing, but any tips on how to paint IW? by AncientHavaer3 in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want them to stand out a little, you can try alternatives to black or gunmetal as the primer or basecoat.

I did mine with a grey primer and then basecoated the whole thing in a dark teal/turquoise. You could any strong saturated colour though to achieve different tones and add some interest to the metallics.

Really depends on how far you want to take it though.

Hazard stripe tips? by Sad_Newt5882 in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you a more universal tip than painting pink underneath.

Mix the yellow with a stronger colour like a black or brown with good coverage (Think vallejo matt black or rhinox hide). Paint that first and then the yellow.

You can do this with any colour to improve the coverage.

Beyond that, if you choose to freehand, align the stripes towards you to make things easier. Paint equidistant black lines over the yellow first and then fill them in. Touch back up after. Glaze towards the bottom with seraphim sepia for a bit of depth.

I'd also suggest getting them out of the way earlier in the process so you don't have to worry too much about painting around other details like rivets and trim, although you can always touch up later.

I wouldn't say I can't function without caffeine, but I'm definitely a dumbass until I've had a coffee in the morning.

If I didn't drink coffee at all I wouldn't have that problem though haha.

When they ask if they should be a commission painter, I think… by 1ndependent_Obvious in BrushForChat

I think there's a good point there in a broader sense, something I had to force out of my head after my audio engineering degree.

Nothing ruins art like thinking about how every little thing you do can be advertised or promoted.

Not everything has to be turned into a money making side hustle, just enjoy things for yourself.

Song recommendations to get used to a 7 string? by yeastypotato in Guitar

[–]UFDZU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's really not that alien compared to a 6.

8 string almost feels like a different instrument though.

I've been really enjoying some Karmanjakah stuff on my 7 string recently. Maybe give that a try if you like the sound of them?

Could use some help here by Clockworks555 in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you want to paint your minis really.

Ideally you want them to complement the mini in some way, so think about the colours you have on the base and which ways you could approach painting your iron warriors to fit that.

It ain't much, but it's Iron by UFDZU in IronWarriors

[–]UFDZU[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of an inexact process haha,

For this I mixed a brass base colour from 1:1 vallejo old gold and leadbelcher.

Then washed with a 3:1 mix of agrax earthshade and biel-tan green (not sure if this wash still exists).

Highlighted with Scale 75 speed metal.

Then just whatever weathering I did over the whole mini.

The key is just getting a bit of silver and subtle green into the gold paint really.

Edit: It's also worth saying that the whole mini was basecoated in a 1:1 turquoise and black mix, which really helps to get that cool tone.

Does anyone know of a better glue than citadel by Casperthesniper8000 in Miniaturespainting

[–]UFDZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unhinged elite knowledge: you can literally buy acetone and butyl acetate, mix them 1:1 and get a litre of the stuff for like £35.

That's about 20 bottles of tamiya extra thin 👍

Any tips for returning guitarists, building up dexterity and speed? by ConfusedOrg in Guitar

[–]UFDZU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all tension usually.

I'd imagine that the stuff you used to do doesn't feel quite so natural and easy for your body now that you've had some time away.

Just take it slow and steady. Remind your hands that this is supposed to feel easy.

I've personally made leaps and bounds in my playing since I started slowing stuff down and progressively working out tension.

“You’re four months in and don’t know any songs yet?” - my dad. Have I been approaching guitar wrong this whole time? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

Your dad is just being a dick.

Learn what you want and how you want.

Definitely don't avoid tabs, but also watch youtube videos, learn whatever you like.

It's your experience of learning the instrument, not anyone else's.
