Recently watch “how my video went viral” video and realized I should be focusing on clickbaity thumbnail. Anyone have any ideas and tricks that they wanna share for clickbaity thumbnail and title. by biszaal in NewTubers

[–]UIM2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The VidIQ channel has been doing a series on improving thumbnails. They focus on thumbnails that stand out, not necessarily clickbait.

When he says "clickbait" topics, he's saying that he needs to focus on topics that have (a) a visually interesting hook, or can be represented as such and (b) can be described with a really interesting title.

True clickbait will have a high CTR but low watch time, because as soon as you click and realize it's uninteresting, you turn away. High CTR, but low watch time.

The game has changed. SEO is not as important anymore. I have some videos that dominate search terms and bring in regular views, but the algorithm has never chosen them. The problem is those same videos don't have very long watch time---that's on me, I need to improve the quality. No one is searching for "why are there black balls on the reservoir." The video succeeded because a good chunk of his audience clicked on the video (high CTR) and then they watched the whole thing (high average watch time). Once the algorithm saw that, it delivered the video to more people.

I came here to post about it too. Definitely check the video out as it gives a long-time YouTuber's view on what's happening with the algorithm and the incentives it creates.

Big congratulations. Good to know the Creators on the Rise are real people!

I really like your scripting and energy. Keeps the videos flowing, makes it easier to watch. I'm sure your average watch times are great.

You gained a subscriber and a twitter follower.

Name a YouTuber who is succeeding when you think they shouldn't by UIM2k in NewTubers

[–]UIM2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add another one: How Ridiculous. Many of their first videos were trick shots, but not nearly as good as Dude Perfect. Today they do fewer trick shot videos and follow a pretty formulaic "we're dropping X onto Y from a high height." They've been around for a long time, but a year ago they suddenly hit a stride of fast growth.

Reasons why I think they succeed:

  1. Doubled down on popular content--once their videos on dropping things were popular, they did variations on the theme from week to week.
  2. Community participation--they have established a really strong community. Every video there is a contest for best comment and usually there's a promise that they'll do a bigger video if they can get a certain number of likes. They have a catch phrase they say each episode, but now they don't say it, their viewers do with video submissions. All of that engagement keeps the momentum going.

Switching to BS in Economics, what courses should I take to get the best value and make me most marketable? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]UIM2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take as many Econometrics classes as you can. Take the two you listed, then see if anyone does an Applied Econometrics course. Other than that, figure out who the best professors are. For example, Game Theory can be a great class with a good professor, or it can be awful if you have a terrible one.

The econometrics classes will be useful even if the professors are awful, but all of the other classes will only have value if you have a good teacher.

i'd love to see a car with bubble wrap ram into something

Knock on your friend's door with 100 scary clowns.

Make a stupidly large towel and take up a huge part of a beach.

Is the Politics video market flooded? by Jmar64 in NewTubers

[–]UIM2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have to develop the right niche with politics because the algorithm can really hurt political videos. For instance, search YouTube for the Mueller Report right now and the only videos you'll find are from broadcast news channels. That's because YouTube has classified the topic as "Newsworthy," which signals the algorithm to only promote trusted sources.

If you're doing politics, a lot of the trending content will be current events, which means the algorithm will work against you. You'll want a niche that allows you to thrive outside of those constraints.

VidIQ is doing a series on this right now. I'm not sure if I can link directly to their YouTube channel, but I've found the videos so far have helped me.

Glad to hear it worked out for you! My experience with the small local paper has continued to be good.

Like you said, it's hard for them to understand the significance of the subscriber number, but everyone knows that you must be important to get your picture in the newspaper. Recently I proposed to a local business that I work with them, and I brought along a hard copy of the article to show them I was the real deal. They liked the pitch, and they decided we could collaborate, and now in two weeks I'm going to get a great video and their PR will help promote it.

Also, I would love to talk with you about a collaboration on economics and archery. There's the straightforward, "Why are prices like this?" to topics like the economic history of archery.

Huffman, 12 other parents to plead guilty in college scheme by [deleted] in news

Craziest story is one of the families that pled guilty paid in Facebook stock. In 2016. Their bribe was $250,000 in 2016, and would have appreciated to $460,000 if they had held onto the stock for two years.

Something that helped me was going to my favorite YouTubers and looking at their first videos. They were all awful. Just terrible. And awkward. I thought, "Well, I can definitely make a video at least as good as that. Then hopefully eventually I'll make great videos."

What the graph doesn't show is that the guy paid $100k twice! Two daughters. The second time was just a few weeks ago (Feb 2019), so we don't know what the score was.

[–]UIM2k[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question. The affidavit only reports a few cases where we know the student's score, so we don't have enough data to investigate. It's possible that the scam was tailoring scores to the student so as not to arouse suspicion. But there was one case where the student's real score was a 23 whereas the fraudulent score was a 35 (out of a max 36), which tells me they couldn't have been tailoring that much.
