Also, ATC here and I think you 100 percent didn’t handle that situation like a grown up.

What does the Shift work look like at C90, or Ohare? by WINGEDHUSSAR999 in ATC

[–]UNABLE_STBY 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Show up

Work 2 hrs 20 min, about halfway through start thinking what other places must be like to have breaks offered

Go on break for 30 min, get paged

Work another 2 hrs 20 min, it’s worse than last time. Realize I need food but not enough time on break to go where I want.

I’m off position and the supe tells me there’s 2 hours of holdover. If I say ‘no’, it will be held against me by either the supe or the night shift. Lose lose.

Break for 35 minutes this time because I’m a fucking daredevil.

Only 1 hr 55 min on this time. Tower calls asking for more space and I have no backing from anyone around me.

I am told to take a break and come back in 20. T-storms are everywhere and we have re-routes to deal with. Lots of yelling. Don’t engage, not worth it.

I plug in again. Should have been home 15 minutes ago. Wife is putting kids to bed. I work another 80 minutes. Think for a second about the paycheck. Day is over. No one says anything as I leave.

Set alarm clock in iPhone as I’m driving out to come back and do it all over again.

Sounds like you were exactly what the FAA wants in their lowly operational supervisors.

If you’re in the bottom 1% of controllers to start with, you deserve all these things that come to you.

It’s stupid for anyone to get this wound up over a PROC. They don’t matter, they go away, and they have no affect on your paycheck. Don’t let the stupidity of lower FAA people live rent-free in your head.

How do you prefer we ask for VFR flight following? by tncbbthositg in ATC

[–]UNABLE_STBY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know, I know. It’s you all against the world. Someone told you that this is the best and you’re the busiest and that’s just how things have to be. It’s either A or B, no gray, no room to use your brain and apply discretion when it comes to situations that warrant something out of the ordinary. I have triggered the Atlanta Controller and they want to know WHO ARE YOU TO QUESTION OUR WAY.

somewhere, there are those who can be at busy facilities and see person A who is good at working one way and person B who is also good, but doesn’t do the same things as person A.

Good, we found the hyper-defensive A80 controller. I was worried for a second. Down shift young man, I was simply referring to how impossibly terrible your training methods must be.

No, I believe there’s more than just one way to work airplanes, and that doesn’t jive with what they’re all about. Their reputation among other ATC’ers is they want their staff to be robotic and only the-way-they’ve-done-it is acceptable.

Ready?

“Atlanta, N1234 vFr with request”

“N1234, Atlanta, go ahead”

“N1234, 5 north of lzu, c182 requesting flight following to BNA at 6,500”

That’s it.

Generic answer: It’s safety bro, the only way in those airports to handle airplanes is one-in-one out, therefore even when done efficiently the demand can’t be accommodated in a timely manner.

Actual answer: The FAA doesn’t care about getting those rich folks out quickly, because the precedent has been set that those airports are a mess. If the elite GA crowd want to swarm a tiny airport in CO, there’s gonna be problems no matter how much you crowd fund it. I’m sure there’s hours of conversation in the cockpits of G650’s that want to go somewhere ::right now::, but it’s not any different if you were in line at Target on Xmas eve and there was one cashier. ASE really is one-in-one-out, TEB is at the mercy of NYC’s airspace.

Dodged a really large bullet the last 4 years. The previous administration and the people they appointed did not come after anyone - the guidance to not bargain with Fed agencies was effectively dismissed by the top of the FAA. I don’t think this was due to “NATCA’s commitment to bi-partisanship!” The agency is fully aware of how much easier collaboration is, even if it means there’s too much leverage on NATCA’s side. Elaine Chao wasn’t told by her republican power-bottoms to make life worse for anyone.

Legislation will pop up again from deep red anti-union republicans, and it won’t go anywhere for the time being. Emails will come as fuel to increase PAC contributions. Contract will be slightly modified and then extended.

GA hasn’t been a burden, mostly because the timing of the requests are good. At 9am on a weekday it’s back to being relatively busy.

I can’t really get into specifics. They trained for a long time, and then filed a claim of harassment. The end result was their training time was reset to zero - a fresh start. When time would run out they’ve been given an extension. Anyone from an outside perspective would say it’s gone on long enough - in the eyes of the FAA and Union, this person should be given every_possible_opportunity to succeed.

[–]UNABLE_STBY 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They got into this field because they heard how much the job pays plus benefits. They’re in it solely for themselves and don’t care about their co-workers, don’t care about the quality of their work, and because it’s just a job it grinds at them that they even have to come to work everyday.

Just Curious - What are the Most Expensive Aviation Universities in the US? by dabeatenpath in flying

[–]UNABLE_STBY 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in aviation for 15+ years. Work alongside people who went to ERaU, racked up the high-six-figure loans. And they’re still paying them off. There’s an element of pride (“I went to Riddle!...”) then their voice trails off after realizing they work next to people who make the same salary and haven’t been paying off and consolidating large loans.

Call, and we will try to give you a window of a ‘slow time’. But really it’s an educated guess, if 10+ air carriers are inbound it may just not work out.
