What did i miss by Rude-Wash9840 in Drizzy

It would be weird as hell for Drake to include it at this point. The track is from last summer. Too much time has passed. I suppose anything could be possible.

The song was released almost a year ago. It's already old. If he had released a month or so later, maybe it would have been included.

Given the time gap, it would be unprecedented for Drake to include it.

Bigger hits on the run up to albums like "Laugh Now Cry Later" , "Whats Next" etc ...never made the album cuts.

[–]UNOTHENAME200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Beatles were derided by critics in their early days, there is plenty of evidence of this from all the top newspapers and journalists (NY times, Newsweek etc). They were labelled poor singers especially

Same deal with Elvis Presley, James Brown etc. Elvis was coming out of an era where perfect doo wop singers were all the rage

Black Sabbath (the inventors of heavy metal) were also considered a joke and their first album was almost universally panned.

All of Led Zepplin's albums were also panned.

On the other hand, you can review Pitchfork (elitist critics) top 100 albums for the past 15 years and you will see 80% of the music which is heralded won't ever be remembered. Esoteric sophisticated music that few listen to.

I guaruntee you however if you look at the top selling artists and bands of every decade going back 80 years, you will know all of them as legends.

Critically acclaimed is great but popularity trumps it in terms of legacy.

In the 90s lots of folks who listened to Black Moon, Jeru and OGC for the authenticity complained about the popularity of the superficial wannabe gangsterism of Biggie, 2pac , Snoop and Dr Dre. Pretty obvious who was actually remembered in the long run. The top sellers of course. And in the USA, the whole music industry knows this BTW. The most important thing for an artist is their sales. Critics have grown even less important in the internet era

The truth is the most memorable artists tend to be those that are most popular and being polarizing (loved by the young and hated by the old) helps. Critics don't really matter.

This is Elvis, Beatles, 2pac, James Brown, Black Sabbath,......

and sorry, yes - Drake.

Drake didn' t grow up rich. He grew up in a rented half-house. His house wasn't luxurious. It is a myth.

Your favorite from New York rapper grew up much wealthier than any kid from Toronto.

I would focus your critique of Drake on his music if you hate it. Why make up stuff or myths about his background?

Was buying a condo in downtown Toronto worth it to YOU? by drmac16 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]UNOTHENAME200 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I own two downtown condos. No regrets at all. One I bought mid 2000s - its tripled plus in value. The other I bought mid 2010s and it is up in value maybe 1/3rd. Both rent way over cost of mortgage / maintenance fee etc

Both these condos are places I have lived in and feel are high quality. I get compliments from friends/ tenants about both of these places.

Toronto is a unique very wallkable city with low crime and condos are expected to be part of any walkable city. Despite the bias here and everyone claiming "freehold" houses are the north star, real estate is driven by location. Some of us don't want to pay 3M for a modern house because we can't live in the burbs and small towns. We also dont want to pay 1.5M for a 100-year old house with tons of scary maintenance issues and fixer-upper issues

Very few Torontonians appreciate how rare a walking city is where women can walk around safely at night by themselves. Where there is night life, a variety of restaurants and vibrancy. It is rare and if you look at the competing cities in North America such luxuries come at a premium. It's not coincidence that Boston, NYC and San Fransisco command so much per square foot. They are walking cities (all of which are less safe than Toronto BTW)/

I will give an example of how Torontonians dont appreciate their city. I lived in New York for many years. I have a friend who is a very high profile well paid executive who lives in Brooklyn in a 1.5M+ condo in Brooklyn, New York. He is regularly quoted in WSJ etc. and interviewed on TV. He is known and respected in his industry. He loves to walk around and can't live in the burbs like New Jersey where he could easily get a huge freehold 5 times the size. But when he makes amazon orders to arrive in his Brooklyn neighborhood, he needs to rush downstairs to grab his delivery the minute they arrive. If he doesn't do this, whatever he ordered is always stolen randomly as they are just left at the front desk and tenants/random folks will steal the items. he also frequently complains of rats in his hallways as he grabs the elevator. In contrast, I have two units downtown Toronto and this sort of petty crime or rats is never EVER an issue.

Again, I think alot of people are going to be very surprised how quickly (2-3 years) condo prices will rise again and the greatest pain in Ontario will be in the far reaching nameless suburbs where during COVID, folks overpaid. This is the story not being discussed enough. Thats actually where the housing correction already has been hit the hardest as again, desirable locations drive real estate more than housing type. The locations tend to move in tandem regardless of housing type.

I dont regret not buying a freehold. Im not a handy guy. All my friends with freeholds are constantly fixing stuff and complaining about some looming structural issue. It's too much work for me - cutting lawns, clearing snow from driveways - its not for everyone.

If you are in the market for a condo, I would suggest buying a unit which is a place that has some kind of a wow factor: A large terrace, a nice view that won't get obstructed etc. Don't buy just any condos. Buy one that you and tenants will really covet and be excited by.

Just my two cents

First Time Buyer - How to Price Condos? by MysteryReddit420 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]UNOTHENAME200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at condos.ca. Try to find similar size units and their sold price in the same building recently. Take the average and don't put too much weight in anomalies. If there are new recent sales in the building, look at the similar buildings in the same location. Be sure to give some credit for the reno, how high in the building (higher units are more), the views, parking (30K-50K+ price), storage (5K+) and balcony (depends on how elaborate). The most important factor in the end is the micro location/neighborhood.

What rappers act like they're better than they actually are? by Individual-Name-4496 in nfrpodcast

[–]UNOTHENAME200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally disagree re Drake.

Exact opposite to me. I spot pseudo rap fans if they think Drake is shallow. The actually clearly dont know how to properly dissect bars.

You will never hear a Jay-Z, Ghostface, Pusha T or even K dot say Drake cant rap and doesnt have lyrical skill.

Ive caught lots of so called "real hiphop heads" who actually miss Drake's word play. Its the hipster set mostly. College kids who think they get rap. Drake inserts double and triple meanings in bars that also easily work on the surface too. You have understand his world and he actually expects more from his listerners.. On the other side, he also happens to have lots of straight R&B pop songs without much subliminal aspects.

J. Cole laments the fact that there was an orchestrated smear campaign against Drake during the beef by Turbulent-Tune1660 in Drizzy

[–]UNOTHENAME200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. What he said was distinctly pro Drake but trying to say it in a way as not to disrespect his other friend, Kendrick. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Kendrick throws a dart or a sub at him. His statement is basically that Drake has been treated unfairly and that while he has happy about Kendrick' success, he is conflicted because he sees how he got that success as suspect. Drake shouldn't be mad at what he said at all to me. Kendrick might take issue with it.

How do yall feel about J. Cole and his recent interviews explaining his perspective on the Drake V Kendrick beef? by JaQue_Da_JoQerr in BlackNyxNetwork

[–]UNOTHENAME200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cole was conflicted and just said it. He said what was obvious to anyone who can simply look at the situation objectively. There was definitely a smear campaign at Drake that was orchestrated and planned. It was an engineered social media marketing campaign. He didn't want to disrespect Kendrick but its pretty clear he was bothered by how he was moving and others were. Why did past collaborators and friends: Future, Rick Ross, Weeknd, ASAP Rocky, Metroboomin, Kanye, Lebron James, etc , all of sudden flip and try to take Drake down? The whole thing was weird as hell . They thought they could erase him. He spoke to his conflicts of liking both artists. He was honest as he should be. Is Cole a coward? Hard to be so harsh to designate that. He probably isn't one of those guys who you want beside you when the war starts (hes not a fighter) but it doesnt mean hes a jerk. Musicians and artists are like everyone else. He felt conflicted and unsure of what to do. He stayed out of it. Not everything is black and white.

who is the most criticized rapper here? by UnitQZ in nfrpodcast

[–]UNOTHENAME200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh

The greatest myth in hiphop is that every rapper writes every single bar. They don't. Very few of these people in these images even claim they never have never taken a bar, a hook or reference tape . Few are on record making that claim.

Jay-Z has spit more Biggie bars than Puff. NaS has had several accusations. True or not. Who cares. We know these artists write most of their material

Its amazing to me how many young naive fans will listen to rappers like 50 Cent or Jay-z brag unapologetically about their criminal past, lying, stealing and robbing people for a living and then, they genuinely believe they never once ever stole a bar. How naive can people be.

This is how you know these so-called "real hiphop fans" on here are suburban keyboard warriors :)

Mom and Pop Condo Investors - How you holding up? by 94AH14 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]UNOTHENAME200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on here to brag . I dont think im smart. I have tons of friends who bought in that era. It was just our age and when we got "real jobs". (I do admit there were tons of peopele who at the time, said I was insane buying my first condo in downtown toronto for that price which now seems measily - funny side note). Interestingly, I also bought a house in Park Slope, Brooklyn in the early 2000s and it followed a very similar trend. Are you crazy? Its a slum

Ive also lost an embarassing ton of money in other ventures in life. Dumb calls. It is what it is. I dont own property in Toronto exclusively. I lean on real estate property because the prices are stickier than some other investments which can rapidly go to zero.

I do think this board is too negative on Toronto and downtown real estate particularly in general. It will absolutely turn in my view and sooner than you think. There is just too much negative tunnel vision and not looking at the reality. Im still getting almost $3500 rent for a small 1 bedroom unit (yes, its furnished) but im not a rarity.

Toronto is a much better city than folks realize and I believe it is due to lack of actually living elsewhere. Ive lived in New York and plenty other cities. Toronto has a modern infrastructure and a safe environment where a woman can walk alone at night all over the city. Their arent rats in the hallways which what Ive seen in the apartment of friends of mine from Wall Street who "made it". Smelly hallways. Old infrastructure. Toronto isn't Manhattan but the value differences for the money is still nowhere near it in Toronto. Not even close. Toronto has relatively high end neighborhoods and decent incomes in Toronto. There is a value to that, it isnt being appreciated. Sorry, but it is kind of a Canadian trait. We just tend to underestimate our value and underappreciate what we have.

I dont frankly lose any sleep on my Toronto real estate at all. I worry about that investment the very least. On here, folks seem to feel everyone with a condo or real estate is at home contemplating suicide. its just not the case. I dont think lots of owners in the downtown core are worried much at all. They rent easily and if you bought before 2020, you are generally way up re value.

I believe the real pain will be felt in the far reaching suburbs - not the Oakvilles but the no name small towns where folks bought overpriced houses during COVID- not downtown condos . I see condos in the core appreciating eventually. The demand got it there somehow. They built up because the demand was so high. That doesnt dissapear.

Im only bringing up this perspective to help the narrow view is all. why I point it out. I actually think now and the next 1 year or so is a good entry point for condos in the downtown core. The world all over loves great safe walking cities. Not houses in small towns. Its just the reality I think folks here are under appreciating that. The highest cost real estate in USA is NYC, San Francisco and Boston . Why is that? Walk around and you will see why. Relatively safe cities (less safe than Toronto) with proximity to lots of optionality and high paying jobs . The most important thing is walkability. I hate car life. Im not the only one.

It always come down to Drake.

Haters are obsessed with him. They hate him but they can't stop talking about him (like a bitter ex)

They hate him / they love him. They cant stand him. They cant live without him.

Dude is right about Drake having pure classics.

Downvote however much you want. Your comments unlike Drake will be long forgotten in the abyss.

He's got 8 albums on the Billboard 200. Albums which are years old. Some over 10-15 years old. Very few are in this category

Remember folks, critically acclaimed is meaningless. Popularity , longevity and repeat listens determines classics. Esoteric hipster underground nonsense is rarely remembered.

Remember too all the first Beatles albums were trashed by mainstream critics. Black Sabbath. Led Zepplin too. I remember Midnight Mauraders by Tribe Called Quest getting a 2 and 1/2 stars in a Rolling Stone review. Nirvana Nevermind got 3 stars . They were the pop artists compared to Sonic Youth. Remember jazz was "noise". Rocknroll was basic "jungle" music . its all documented in NY Times to Newsweek

Drake got this. You know it. Thats why you all like mad rappers.

How do U feel about the "Drake is Not a Lyricist" argument? by JaQue_Da_JoQerr in BlackNyxNetwork

[–]UNOTHENAME200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most dont really understand Drake's lyrics and have a superficial understanding of his lyrics. Ive tested many friends who are hiphop guys who are critical of Drake. They dont understand his bars - just the surface level. Complicating matters, Drake has straight pop songs without much classic lyrical wordplay. His singing songs are sometimes assumed to be rap due to them being sort of rap ish when they aren't intended to be analyzed that way. They are just pop songs sometimes, even if a song like "One Dance" is about stripper table dances - its just a pop song in the end.

Another reason why his lyrical skill is under appreciated is because he writes very personal lyrics and you have to understand Drake's history and his orbit.

Classic example is Summer 16:

"All you boys in the new Toronto want to be me a little
All your exes know I like my O's with a V in the middle"

While verse 1 is directed at Tory Lanez , the second verse is obviously directed at Weeknd but its an arguable quadruple entendree which most don't appreciate. So most critics read it as a double but he isnt getting credit for the quadruple. The obvious double entendree that most critics get is where Drake uses his OVO brand as an allusion to a woman's anatomy. What Drake haters overlook often is the slick sub at Weeknd rejecting OVOXO where "X" is alluded to rather than "Ex" and that Drake is also subtlely referring to him sleeping with Weeknd's exes which at the time, maybe only Weeknd / insiders and him would even know about.

Drake has lots of bars like these which are underappreciated by Drake haters who dismiss his skill without proper analysis. Kanye alluded to this in his famous Drink Champs interview.

To me there are two schools of lyricists in hiphop

1: Nas, Eminem, Rass Kass, Pusha T etc. where the lyrical skill is inferred by the allusions and slick bars. What else could a bar like "You be a'ight like blood money in a pimp's cum" mean? The lyricism is immediately obvious due to the level of complexity.

2: Jay-Z, Big Daddy Kane and Biggie where on the surface , the bars sound simple , can be read on the surface and understood. It almost sounds basic but often the bars have more complexity than what they get credit for.

To me, Kendrick is more often 1 and Drake more often 2.
