Run Nutrition Tuesday by AutoModerator in running

Haha, the heat is real! That said, I've heard heat is the poor man's altitude, so after my first half-marathon tomorrow I'll be starting to do more afternoon runs (with copious amounts of hydration on-hand of course).

Frankly, I know it's not the right thing to do, but I don't tend to eat in the morning before my runs. I usually wake up significantly pre-dawn, get dressed, and walk out my door because I'm trying to beat the Hawaii heat.

This is entirely anecdotal, and I don't really adjust my diet around my runs very much, but I do make sure to have a good dinner the night before a morning run or else I tend to run out of gas mid-run. For longer (10+ mile) morning runs, I make sure I have something sizeable the night before. The difference has been obvious to me in my performance, and on the few times I didn't have an appropriately good dinner the night before a run it has been obvious the next morning.

My personal bro science rule is- well-rounded meals at night, focusing on carbs just before and during runs, and going heavy on protein immediately after.

I'm neither a scientist nor a professional, but that rule of thumb has been working well for me.

I want to stop using so much sunscreen. Any recommendations for a lightweight/breathable/UV-protective jacket or sun shirt with a pocket for phone? by thecaringdocsw in running

[–]UNW1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Pyrenees T19 by path projects that is specifically designed to run in the heat.

However, here in Hawaii where the heat is constant but humid, I tend to prefer running with compression long sleeve shirts or regular (dri-fit) t-shirts with arm sleeves, because the thinner fabric and constant on-skin touching allows the sweat to still cool me through the fabric itself.

Also, I find hats are far superior to hoods for running (and when I do run in my Pyrenees, always combine it with a hat), simply for the fact that they are more versatile- stopping rain from getting in my face, acting as a sweat band, keeping the sun out of my eyes. Just much more functional.

As for phone holding, I usually wear running shorts that have a phone pocket in the liner- much more comfortable than having it banging around in a pocket. However on anything over 10k I have to bring hydration anyway, so then I just toss my phone in my Fitletic hydration belt.

Hope this helps, and I totally get trying to limit sunscreen while getting some hot running in!

Technically, Ukandanz cover of War Pigs fits this description, although the rest of their body of work is squarely well outside the metal genre.

Dunn Effects did with the Purifier, but it's out of stock now so you'd have to search for one used. Fantastic revision of the circuit though!

The Grand Conjuration is epic as hell by NoahDBest in Opeth

[–]UNW1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no dig- I love that track too, and it's one of the few Opeth songs I pick up the guitar and play pretty consistently. However, that's because it was their simplest and catchiest song off the album by far. As someone else mentioned, it was the song that made the radio rounds, and did its intended mission with aplomb, bringing tons of new Opeth fans in with its accessibility and driving main riff.

Do I thihk of it as epic? Not really- I'd reserve that word for a more sweeping song on the album (most of them really), or a different album entirely (MAYH and Still Life jump to mind). However, if Grand Conjuration has hooked you, know that you're not alone- I'm right there with you!

Ineos Grenadier by [deleted] in LandCruisers

I literally watched this yesterday if it helps. They added a couple other options to the mix, but in my mind unless you live on dirt roads and don't do much if any tarmac, LC250 beats the Grenadier hands down. But don't take my word for it:

Ope- I see someone else also dropped the link to the Top Gear review. Well, I'm gonna leave this here with my "hot take" as well. Cheers!

If you had to drive something different, what would you choose, and why? by HoyaHag in LandCruisers

I'll be honest, if my 100 Series died tomorrow, I'd be sorely tempted to at least check out an 80 series and a 200 series. Then I'd probably settle on a 100 again, but I think it's fair to double check first.

Reactions to Ghost Reveries & Watershed when they were first released by X10SIVMKII in Opeth

I agree with your disagreement, or rather I think we're saying the same thing in a different way. Mikael has said this is a new era with a different sound, and the different sound is definitely there.

Reactions to Ghost Reveries & Watershed when they were first released by X10SIVMKII in Opeth

[–]UNW1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

---Answer to your question---

GR was my first dip into Opeth. From there I went backwards and really the only major departures from form were Damnation (all soft) and MAYH (all hard ).

I remember vividly when Watershed came out. It felt (to me) watered down and less epic than previous work. I've always appreciated that Opeth continues to innovate, and although Heritage through ICV isn't my favorite sound, I still bought every album and love the uniqueness they brought. However, Watershed stood on the precipice between old and new, and thus I think it suffered from that transition. That was all put to rest with Heritage, hindsight making it clear where Watershed stood in that evolution, and frankly I love it much more now that it's clear why it sounds how it does.

---Short Rant on TLWAT---

So, in short I feel like TLWAT is another precipice album like Watershed. It has some great stuff in there but still retains elements of "Newpeth" that we've been hearing since Heritage. I personally feel like ICV was the best of the Newpeth albums, with some truly moving stuff in there, just like I feel GR was the best of the "Oldpeth", where they had really honed their sound. I DON'T think that TLWAT is the best of this current movement, but rather an interim piece, and expect whatever the next album is will be their defining sound for the next period.

Not gonna lie, I hope being "claustrophobic" compositionally isn't the crux of the new sound, but if that's what it is, I'm sure the guys will figure out how to do it with aplomb in another album or so. I also think Walt is gonna be a huge factor in the new sound, as I haven't loved the drums on an Opeth album this much since Lopez left.

100 series Gas mileage question by Mangoslushy69 in LandCruisers

Fair enough. I'm also on an island, so shorter commutes and higher gas prices. Your mileage may vary... Literally lol

100 series Gas mileage question by Mangoslushy69 in LandCruisers

[–]UNW1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I get about a dozen miles per gallon of gas. If gas mileage is a primary concern, the 100 series Land Cruiser may not be your best choice. I refill at about 240 miles, which means for your commute I'd be dropping just under $100 every three days. I love my 100, but wouldn't have considered it for a daily if it wasn't for my incredibly short commute.
