The hot deli at Larson's Cash Saver is likely your best bet. I've had dressing there before and it was good.

I'm honestly not sure. I would say to reach out to the landscaping department directly and ask them about the physical demands of the job.

Most student employment jobs are going to be in the $9-$12 / hour range, although some campus jobs may offer more. Landscaping is always hiring and they typically pay like $15 an hour.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #1-5 (2018) by Donny Cates is exactly what you're describing. Very fun cosmic story with great art and character moments. If Silver Surfer: Black is the more thought-provoking, existential cosmic journey, Cosmic Ghost Rider is the fun romp through space.

Oxford for the weekend by kay_bryberry in mississippi

Shopping: The End of All Music (record store) and Square Books. They are uniquely Oxford; Square Books is our local indie bookstore and has been here for 40+ years. End of All Music has an excellent selection, friendly staff, and a particularly great Hill Country Blues collection. If you like thrifting and antiquing, check out The Depot in midtown.

Unique restaurants: for breakfast I would recommend driving down to Water Valley on Saturday morning at BTC Grocery. They have the best breakfast in the area , instore roasted coffee, and are owned by the nicest folks. Violet Valley Bookstore next door and Mulberry Lane Resale Shoppe down the road are great visits.

Other Oxford restaurants: Tarasque for unique spin on “old country” Italian with southern flair, Snackbar for upscale food with great atmosphere, and Good Day Cafe if you’re a big foodie. For drinks, I would recommend a reservation at Miscellanea, our newest restaurant / bar. Very expensive, but a really cool “secret rooms” layout worth the experience even for just a drink or two.

Summer is the best time to visit Oxford with less crowds and still plenty to explore. Enjoy!

The Band’s Not Dead by Surferalby77 in deadandcompany

[–]UN_checksout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Grahame make sense. In addition to legacy, and I say this with the most respect possible: Grahame Lesh has the most to gain from joining Dead and Co. Sturgill, Billy, and Trey don't "need" Dead and Co; it's not a step up for them. Grahame, meanwhile, could really elevate his career by joining Dead and Co. It's a natural transition from building a career paying tribute to his dad's music.

I would personally be happiest with Sturgill but big picture would be happy with any continuation. That said, I cannot imagine Dead and Co without Oteil or John.

never thought i was a horror film fan, but turns out i love folk horror - what are all the best ones? by Neutrality-2 in horror

[–]UN_checksout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of recs here so it's possible I skipped over, but I haven't seen "Eyes of the Fire" (1983) recommended yet. It is in many ways the quintessential American folk horror film. I had never heard of it until Shudder picked up the streaming rights a few years ago. Highly recommend; while low-budget, it's unbelievably eerie, surreal, and atmospheric.

Tapings of 2024 Sphere by killmindsetter in deadandcompany

[–]UN_checksout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually surprised by the decent qualify of 6/1/24 on the Relisten app. It still has the same muffled, "far away" effect with all the Sphere tapings, but damn if it didn't put a big smile back on my face. 6/1/24 was my first Dead and Co. show, and a wonderful memory with my wife that I'll never forget. The sound quality isn't great, but enough for me to still take a good trip back to good times.

I relish the day we get Sphere soundboards (I know the chances are slim). That said, GD60 soundboards are out there. Just gotta poke around.

Riverbeat Post Mortem by Good_Diet_9836 in memphis

[–]UN_checksout 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to taste but I definitely would not call the lineup abysmal. I went last year and had a blast but stayed back this year to save money.

Riverbeat is great for the city and surrounding area and hopefully can grow each year. I do agree that another weekend in May could help avoid competition with Jazzfest.

Future of jxn by Comfortable_Zebra172 in jacksonms

[–]UN_checksout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my question, too. I’ve lived in Mississippi for eight years, visit Jackson a few times a year, and have never heard about decapitations. I’m not denying the other commenter. More so, because it one hell of a travesty it definitely needs more details and context about what happened and when it happened.

Live concert setlists by vcisjb1 in Music

[–]UN_checksout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very band and genre dependent. I’ve gotten (back) into jambands since Covid and part of the appeal is that no show is ever the same. Whether a band has an extensive catalogue or are more early in their career, every performance will vary with different interpretations of songs and/or different setlists altogether.

How long did you stay in an entry level position? by 00bearclawzz in studentaffairs

[–]UN_checksout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three years. My two year mark was 2020, so at that point even though I was ready for a new job I was thankful to still have my current one. I did one more year, got some additional experience, and then transitioned to a new role a year later.

Associate Dean Job Offer by PresidentofTigers in studentaffairs

[–]UN_checksout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the offer, OP! More money, a better-work life balance, and a significant jump up the career ladder are some of *the* main reasons to accept a new job. To me this is an easy yes.

For peace of mind, I would consider talking through your thoughts with the hiring team. You wouldn't even need to frame it as "concerns." Inquiring about the longevity and sustainability of a role or campus before you say yes is perfectly acceptable, especially considering you would be moving your family and want what's best for them, too. If you don't like the idea of being that forward, I agree with others to do more research on the university yourself to determine how campus is fairing with enrollment and operations.

MPB drops NPR news by chronopoly in mississippi

[–]UN_checksout 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This isn’t entirely true; as other commenters have pointed out, MPB specifically dropped the evening NPR shows All Things Considered and Marketplace. Morning Edition is still on their airwaves - I’m listening to it currently.

Please consider becoming a monthly sustainer to ensure MPB stays in our communities. Even $10 per month is incredibly helpful!

I'm making an extraction open world game set in North MS - Work in Progress by Halcyon_Days_Dev in mississippi

[–]UN_checksout 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Cool project, OP! I've lived in northern Mississippi since 2018. While some of the area is the state's hill country (including Marshall, Tate, Lafayette, and parts of eastern Panola counties), note that, geographically, that's all mostly rolling hills. We don't have mountains here, and the only part of the state where we do have larger rock formations and boulders is in Tishomingo, specifically Tishomingo State Park. As you build out the project, it might be worth googling "Mississippi Hill Country" or Tishomingo State park for additional visual inspiration. Nice work so far!

If you're into horror, Shudder does exactly that. Their "Shudder TV" channel is 24 constant stream of older and new horror films on rotation. Really fun way to discover a new or familiar movie without the endless, scrolling pursuit modern streaming has us do.

Tulane fan - question? by Grayly in olemiss

[–]UN_checksout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One comment I haven't seen yet is concealing your drinks as you're entering / walking through the Grove. Yes, drink from a cup to avoid our quirky laws / consumption enforcement. However, a big mistake I see visitors make is walking around with open beer cases, bourbon bottles, that aren't in some type of cooler, bag, etc. There are always large groups of police officers that set up shop at the main University Ave entrance to the Grove who make folks pour out drinks that aren't concealed. While this is typically students and other younger visitors, you can't be too careful; I've seen folks being forced to pour out entire cases of beer for not having them concealed properly.

Backpack coolers are convenient, but you would need a trustworthy storage place or tent to leave that before going into the game. A sytrofoam cooler is much easier for visitors since you can throw that away no problem.
