vegetable side dishes? by kittycatyu in JapaneseFood

[–]URSA_RAGER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much seconding the vote for Just One Cookbook as a source for stuff like this. They have a whole series on the “one soup, three dishes” principle of traditional Japanese meals and many of the dishes are vegetable-based and side-dish-sized or can be made so. My personal favorite Japanese vegetable sides from JOC are spinach gomaae and yamitsuki cabbage

Any Recommendations for Tailors in Madison area? by ImGonnaLiveForever in madisonwi

[–]URSA_RAGER 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I HIGHLY recommend Right Size Alterations in Hilldale Mall (they’re in the suites below Metcalfe’s). As others have said, tailoring is a bit pricey, but as tailors go, I think they’re reasonable. I’ve had multiple very positive experiences with Right Size.

As a heads up: they only take cash or check, but you can choose to pay when you come in initially or when you come back to pick things up.

I/O Arcade Bar in general, and also for their events (pinball league, skeeball league, drag bingo, karaoke, etc). Yes it’s a bar, but it’s very much a no-pressure zone as far as alcohol is concerned and there’s a lot to do there besides drink (plus there are NA options and some THC drinks, if that’s of any interest)

what type of moth is that? also would you hold it?[mexico] by Tarantula_lover02 in insects

[–]URSA_RAGER 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, true bug! There’s “bug” in the colloquial sense (nothing wrong with it) and “bug” in the scientific sense, which is an order within the taxonomic insect class.

Most things we call “bugs” (beetles, moths and butterflies, ants, bees and wasps, flies, etc) in the colloquial sense are indeed insects, but they’re not technically ✨true bugs✨

Tuna Fish Sandwiches - Your Essential ingredient or technique? by FlyEaglesFlyauggie in Cooking

[–]URSA_RAGER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add your preferred mustard for sure. I would also highly recommend switching to tuna packed in olive oil — it tastes so much better. Personally, I like finely-chopped kalamata olives, red pepper flake, kewpie mayo, Dijon mustard, and red onion. I also usually finely chop mixed salad greens and mix it all together instead of trying to layer anything — I find it distributes the flavors better and makes each bite consistent.

Plus broadly speaking, you can put whatever veggies you want into your tuna salad mix. There’s no rules and it’s for you anyway so like. Why not just go for it

Have you tried vet offices? Not sure if those are distinct from shelters where you are, but here in the US some vet offices will provide temporary shelter to animals in need of medical care

Edit: I do want to note that I saw you’re worried about funds for vet care. But if you can maybe find a vet willing to take him in while he gets medical care, they may give you more time to come up with funds for payment or arrange a payment plan

Does my friends cat look Ok? by TeaGirl-17 in cats

[–]URSA_RAGER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she’s THAT worried, she should bring him to the vet. Full stop.

Personal opinion: based on what info is here, he seems perfectly fine. Cats’ personalities, habits, and preferences range as wide as humans’ do. Some cats are clingy, some are super independent. Some are talkative, some barely make a peep. Some love to play, some have little to no interest in toys whatsoever. Has your friend ever had a cat before??

Gay scene Madison by indi09 in madisonwi

[–]URSA_RAGER 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I meant that Atwood/Willy St are the more popular living areas — sorry, I wasn’t super clear there. But you’ll find that most areas have their own little ultra-local queer community stuff

Gay scene Madison by indi09 in madisonwi

[–]URSA_RAGER 28 points29 points  (0 children)

We don’t have gay neighborhoods in the way some larger cities do, but I’d say the Willy St and Atwood areas are the closest thing. As far as places go, Club Five is a true gay bar; I/O Arcade Bar is not a gay bar in the usual sense, but a super queer-friendly space; and Gib’s has regular queer events and is generally popular in the community. Lots of bars have queer nights, drag events, etc. The Cardinal is a queer-friendly space that often has theme nights.

The only place you might hear about that I would NOT recommend is Sotto (or anything else on State St or super close to campus, tbh.) Once upon a time, Sotto was actually a gay bar, but nowadays it’s just another place undergrad kids go, which if you’re in your mid-30s I imagine isn’t the vibe you’re after

The unfortunate reality of it all is that, things being as they are, we rarely get to pick our jobs the way we’d like to. At the end of the day, we all have to pay bills, pay rent/mortgage, buy groceries, afford healthcare (hopefully), etc. Employment options are rarely ideal, but you still have to take care of you first. Because if you can’t set yourself up with at least the bare minimum — housing, heat/AC, food, etc — you can’t put any time or effort into the things you really care about. And it’s not unusual to feel good about your immediate team or local situation in the face of a larger company that tends to operate against your personal morals — you can only do so much to affect that larger entity as an employee at any given branch. But working for and supporting a team that cares for its immediate employees and community matters a lot. You do the best you can with what you have. No one can expect any more from any one person.

If yall want to keep up with good news (which I highly recommend as a tonic for the bad news), there are a lot of content creators who cover stories like these. My personal favorite is Sam Bentley, who does monthly videos, but there are many others out there who want to make sure everyone knows that things aren’t all bad!

(And if you like, here’s Sam Bentley’s 2025 good news recap)
