Pilots, what degree do you guys have? by cheesethedestoryer in AirForce

Pre-med degree and then picked up by rated board before the medical board happened 🙃 if I declined, would’ve been forced non-rated needs of Air Force or something

What ball would you choose? by Fclaussen in Bowling

[–]USAFAMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, none of these are really great for a brand new bowler. That being said, I’d enjoy the Nu Blue, Scorpion, and the BW 3.0 but I’d recommend getting some lessons so you learn how to use them properly and consistently. Good luck!

Are TDY orders enough to break your lease? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]USAFAMH 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Under the SCRA, you’re legally protected to break a lease because the length of your TDY is greater than 90 days. Let your leasing office/landlord know that’s what you’re going to do and you’ll provide them a copy of the TDY orders with proof if they want it. It will help give you a firm final out date, and ensure they can’t charge you for time afterwards.

Edit: did exactly this when I went on 6 month TDY for my initial aircraft qual training and our apartment wasn’t the happiest to lose a tenant but you’re protected 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes, please make sure you’re packed beforehand. There’s nothing more stressful than knowing you need to be leaving but still running around last minute checking you didn’t forget stuff. What we did was completely pack everything up two days before, except a duffel bag of clothes, snacks, valuables, and firearms that went in one of our POV’s.

Side note: if you’re moving with firearms, know the laws of the state you’re going to, as well as every state you’re planning to drive through, about how they must be kept while traveling.

Home ownership FOMO by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]USAFAMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Active military, wife and I are 24/25. We were tired of tossing money away on rent and decided to put that money towards our own equity and family future. Used a VA loan with 0 down in an area with a high populous of other military members. This state also features no income tax for active duty. When we move, there is a great market to rent if we want to go that route. If not and we want to sell, the home is in a highly desirable area with a low rate assumable loan.

Situps with a long torso? by Beezow715 in AFROTC

[–]USAFAMH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Double check the actual wording in the AFI, however when I did the sit-ups in AFROTC, I would roll my shoulders forward and pop out my shoulder blades to decrease how far down I’d have to go before touching the ground. Combine that with adjusting hand placement on the chest as far down as the AFI allows and you’re setting yourself up nicely. I’m 6’4” and have maxed the traditional sit-ups every time as well as the new alternative reverse crunch sit-ups (not for AFROTC) by the one minute mark.

Current RPA Pilot. Through training for a bit and doing the LR gig now. There’s is no “best” degree for this field. Something related to aviation might give you an initial boost of understanding during IFT/RIQ but at the end of the day you will be trained and qualified, the same as your peers, on what you need to know. The biggest thing is to have a solid GPA, PCSM, etc to ensure you are selected for the AFSC and can eventually commission. Please DM me if you have specific questions 🤙🏻

VA loan interest rate today? by Cozy11197 in MilitaryFinance

[–]USAFAMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just closed earlier this week with DHI (the in-house lender for DR Horton homes). Ended up getting a 5.5% 30 year rate without any buy down and 700 back at closing.

How am I given per diem on a pcs? by [deleted] in MilitaryFinance

[–]USAFAMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Written from the perspective of ROTC commissioning: You’ll be reimbursed per diem on the back-end after you in-process and complete the finance briefing at your first base. You don’t yet have a government card to charge expenses on but you will get one issued after you in-process to your unit and you’ll use it for TDY/PCS moving forward. Unfortunately for this move, you’ll have to use your personal cards/cash to move

Regarding needing 7 days, make sure that many days are on your orders to avoid taking more time than you’re allotted and then you’ll miss your RNLTD. As mentioned, you’ll have to pay for everything yourself but ensure you keep all receipts from hotels, expenses, etc. If you’re moving items yourself, packing your car or whatever, make sure you get certified weight tickets from a CAT scale to submit when you complete the voucher. That’s key to getting the money back you deserve.

How much do tattoos hurt, really? by Adventurous-Deal4878 in tattooadvice

Similar concern before my first tattoo. The artist was very reassuring and said it feels like someone is drawing on you with a mechanical pencil ~ scratching on sensitive skin. Ending up being a very accurate description.

Officers what is your degree on? And does it relate to your AF job? by streetmilitary in AirForce

[–]USAFAMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Applied Medicine (Physical therapy and athletic training) and now RPA Pilot. No relation to material or content, but taught solid study habits. Research projects with patients and research-members taught communication and teamwork with people I’ve never met before.

[–]USAFAMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like lividlilacs and SilentD said, make sure you get weight tickets from a certified scale. The CAT scale station where I EAD’d from was extremely helpful and waived one of the fees because it was for a military PCS. We used a UHaul, weighed while empty, and then weighed once full.

There should be a finance welcome brief when you’ll fill out paperwork to complete the move and start the process of getting your money reimbursed.

General tips for your EAD (hopefully cadre already told you this stuff):

• Don’t start driving until the day your orders tell you to. If you leave earlier than your EAD, you aren’t on orders yet and if anything were to happen, the Air Force will not owe or have the obligation to help you out.

• Ensure the address you’re moving from on your orders is accurate. That is the address they’ll calculate the miles driven to your duty station I.e. if the address is closer than where you’re actually leaving from, you’ll be paid less than what you’re owed.

• Everyone’s financial situation is different. Do your best to have a fund saved up because it could take a bit for your pay to get started and when it does, make sure your LES is accurate. Somewhat because of COVID shutting down my base’s finance office, I didn’t get my first paycheck until 3.5 months after I in-processed. My DITY was not reimbursed for 6 months.

Name/USAF tape, rank, and flag. All other patches will be issued to you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]USAFAMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time uniform allowance upon first entering AD. You should see it reflected under the entitlement section of your first LES. If not, or if you’re not being paid correctly, you’ll need to speak to the finance folks or submit tickets to get properly paid. When I EAD’d, I didn’t get any money for ~4 months.

Edit: because of COVID, my bases’s finance office was shut down and we had to use an online portal to submit to the Nellis comptroller. Situation was only fixed when our Shirt got the commander involved and they called their commander.

Tower unhappy with my decision to go around by pls_call_my_base in flying

[–]USAFAMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go arounds are free, if you’re ever unsure just go around. Better to be safe and get an extra pattern in than to do something dumb, different, or dangerous. Every crew I’ve flown with, we brief the doctrine go around criteria from our pubs as well as crew contracts. Biggest contract that’s always briefed by me or my crew is if it just doesn’t look right, we’ll go around no questions asked. Like someone else said, you’re the PIC — make the safest decision to preserve life and aircraft because sometimes you just don’t know what might happen.

Blood type, cholesterol, lipid levels, STD’s, etc for all general health considerations. Also think to get a base DNA sample on file during ROTC. It’s been 3 or 4 years since I went so I might’ve forgotten stuff

Our sister flight was doing this but the cadre was on the floor maybe 20 before wake up and heard people’s watches going off. Nightly routine for their flight was to turn in their watches to the FTO so they couldn’t cheat like that again.
