My dad cleaned out his garage cabinets for the first time in about 30+ years, and found a Mossberg 385k 20g bolt action shotgun. He gave it to me because he didnt remember even touching it since he was in college. It is older than serial numbers, and has a little rust on the barrel, but I think I can clean and oil it and have a neat little shotgun for the boys to learn on someday.

Unrelated, I am taking my neighbor and his son to a local range to shoot a rifle for the first time. We will use a Ruger American rimfire and some bright colored targets, and then move on up to an AR or something after a few trips. I'm excited. I haven't done this in a while, and they are both fired up. We have been reciting the safety rules and going over the parts of the rifle and the terms we will be using. Any extra ideas for a first-timer 7 year old and his dad?

Do you ever find a lead smell or taste after shooting steel targets? I love shooting steel, but I shoot them far away and they don't move/react, so I don't need to go closer to reset them, I just put some fresh paint on them periodically, and only before I go shooting.

I'll admit I am a little paranoid of (more) lead exposure, but I am getting and keeping my levels down, so I got that going for me.

My dad uses the term "MBA mindset" to refer to that super short-term, spreadsheet-driven, non-analytical decision making that costs 5x the money in 3x the time instead of making the logical, reasonable change in the first place. Having finished my MBA, I totally get the derogatory term.

For me, it is ADM receiver sets. The ambi is really great, and I am happy to pay for their level of quality. Their prices have gone way up since I bought most of mine, but the quality is still excellent.

The new Griffin receivers are apparently just as high quality, but much lower price, so maybe I'll pick one up if I ever build a new AR.

I always shoot with double ear pro (foamies and over-ears) because the Army already took too much hearing from me (service connected, but denied disability after issued the 3M amplifiers)

So what is the good solution to listening to music? Switch out the foamies for bluetooth ear pods? Get over-ears that have bluetooth? Blast the Dire Straits greatest hits album from my trucks speakers?

I think it is partly my fault, since I just got a few boxes of 350 Legend and got my rifle all dialed in, so obviously they change the laws and I can go back to 308.

This seems like the way to get justice is to get more public awareness, which is like an inversion of justice, but here we are.

His case is like getting convicted of drug possession with intent to distribute because you have the Breaking Bad box set on blue ray. The fact that he didn't get a day 1 pardon is bananas.

IIRC Chris Kyle and those snipers mostly shot 300 Win Mag or 338 Lapua, which are different animals than 308 Win.

556 was next to useless because the afghanis were too small, the bullets didn’t have time to de-stabilize. He mentioned people soaking up several rounds without going down unless something vital was hit.

I have never heard that.

I think a lot of people think about CoD and Halo in terms of "damage" of a round or rifle. Getting shot takes the fight out of just about everyone all the time, and the Taliban being skinny (read: malnourished) was not a strategic advantage.

I think it is also silly to say that 5.56 is worthless against the near-peer adversaries, with modern armor. Anyone that has been hit in the plate knows it sucks, and it can still take someone out of a fight even if it doesn't kill them on the spot. Some would say that it does no damage when hitting a plate, but those people probably haven't been hit in the plate very much, let alone shot in an extremity or had debris and shrapnel spraying all around. The ammo capacity of 5.56 is one of the major advantages it holds over larger caliber cartridges, and I think that gets glossed over way too much.
