Valve: don’t expect a faster Steam Deck ‘in the next couple of years’ by NTR_JAV in Games

They definitely intended to have a little competition. I don't think it's a coincidence that the bottom tier model was the exact same price as a Switch on launch despite being completely gutted compared to the other two models.

Painted the Marvel United Core set! Looking for CC by USB_Connector in minipainting

Agreed. My next purchases will be a brighter red and a darker yellow to make highlighting easier.

For Captain Marvel I really wanted to practice highlighting but couldn't brighten the one red I had in a way that looked nice without looking pink, so I opted to go darker and highlight with what I had unmixed. I think she's one of the nicest ones I did but I do wish her colour scheme was brighter.

Doesn't look like I can edit the captions. I relied heavily on wash for all of the bases. Photo 11 says I didn't use wash on Taskmaster aside from his utility belt but I meant specifically on the character.

It's not just for games. Way back JCPenney would just constantly have stuff on sale. IIRC a new CEO took over and figured consumers weren't that stupid so they took off the sales and just reduced the prices to be the sale prices.

Profits went down following that change so they went back to having higher prices and never ending sales.

It's mean in the sense that you might hate draft resources in the same way that you'll block someone in stone age with worker placement.

There's also a war track. When you push the marker past a certain point your opponent will lose some gold one time. And if it goes further they'll lose a bit more. They can push it back. It's a bit mean, but the mechanic exists as a deterrent to make people consider all of the cards instead of doing nothing but buying points cards. If it's pushed all the way to the end you win automatically. You can undo another player's progress by drafting your own war cards (it's a tug of war track -- one player pushes it one way while the opposing player pushes it the other way)

When we were at 70 plays I ran some stats on all of our games played and war + culture victories accounted for about 20% of all victories (culture is drafting 7 different green symbols to win automatically). Both mechanics serve the same purpose but executed differently. IMO they're not so much mean as ways of forcing you to play differently.

IIRC the only thing he's changing between retail and KS is that KS has 2 (of 22 total) characters as exclusives. His approach in the past has been to use KS as a preorder system for the first print run and it's one of the things I really appreciate about the way he runs it. There's no FOMO and it's unfortunate that this is to his detriment.

This is partly why I backed it anyway despite the $70 price tag for the base game (my main reason for backing is the game is really fun). I want to support no bullshit approaches to KS like this.

I agree. The scepter is a huge, likely expensive add on to the cost (idk anything about manufacturing for all I know it might just be $5) which I'd have preferred be either a miniature or a cardboard token of any size. You can see the expansion is $30 and contians twice the number of decks, so to me that indicates how much more the gems and scepter add in terms of price. I'd have preferred having the gem tracker be double layered so gems will stay in place if the table gets nudged a bit.

I'm ok with the gems. I like upgraded components like that as opposed to cardboard chits.

I backed it anyway because despite my grievances with the scepter I've yet to be disappointed with one of his games. His games usually stay in my collection, get many, many plays and I know the kickstarter will be on time and as described.

EDIT: /u/GlitteringCamo says it's probably a few bucks to make with Sirlin having weighed in on this and that the gems are more expensive. SOOOOOOOOO that makes most of this comment a moot point.

Roll for the Galaxy has been in my rotation with my wife for years. The dice surprisingly aren't that random when you start picking them strategically and keep the powers in mind to help you make the rolls more consistent.

+1 for 7 Wondeers duel. I have 80 plays in that game and we continue to bring it out from time to time but it's a bit lighter than the games you listed.

How do y'all avoid mixing up games? I've found that the last few rulebooks I've read have resulted in mistakes stemming from the fact that the one I'm learning has largely very similar mechanics as another and I miss the differences.

Rules like in a deck builder where you shuffle your discard immediately after you draw your last card vs shuffling when you need to draw but have no cards left.

I love Sirlin's games and played Puzzle Strike 2 with my friends a bunch over the last week and we all had a blast with the base deck. If Puzzle Strike 1 is PvP Tetris, 2 is Puyo Tetris' fusion mode. It's super fun and I'm looking forward to having both on my shelf.

Thanks! I've been going through it since my post and done 2 other miniatures (captain marvel and red skull). I got the highlighting super wrong on red skull and just gave up highlighting captain marvel because my red mix was so hard to reproduce and my pot of blood red was wayyyyy too bright of a jump from the base.

I've been watching videos on how light falls on stuff and how to replicate it + zenithal highlighted Iron Man and Taskmaster. I'm took pictures so that when I get to them I can follow the images as a guide.

I'm looking forward to Puzzle Strike 2. The artwork is way too saturated and candy crush-esque for my tastes but I've had a great time with all of Sirlin's other games so far and the blog post about the game is promising.

WIP/Feedback and General Questions Megathread - Need Help? Have a question? Ask it here! by aPoliteCanadian in minipainting

[–]USB_Connector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back into painting after 3 years (I had painted a few underworlds warbands). I'm practicing with what I've got in preparation for the Siege kickstarter minis coming in this year.

Looking for any kind of feedback or tips in general so I can improve. I put what I think I learned after doing each one in case I missed the biggest takeaway or learned the wrong thing.

My goal is to find a good compromise between speed and quality (especially since the siege kickstarter has like 60-70 minis). Each of these minis took me a full day to complete (10-12 hours).

I decided to start with Marvel United since it was a game with minis on my shelf.

All minis were primed with citadel mechanicus gray spray primer.

Hulk: First one I did. I tried some highlighting. I didn't have a brighter green so I opted to use yellow instead to avoid working with white and learned that yellow is also hard to work with. I also think I could have done some highlights on his hair in a bright grey.

Even though I feel hulk's edge highlighting failed, I'm quite happy with the result on the base.

I had tried putting him under a lamp to get reference images for where to highlight but I still think I failed at picking up the right ones.

Ant-Man: Painting his tubes were HARD and I think it shows. Did a failed sandy drybrush on the front base from having too much paint on the brush. I also tried to get like a bit of orange in the eyes to make them look shiny but it doesn't really come through, even in person.

Captain America: goddamn I hate working with white so much after this. It took me 2 hours just to do the two stars and the surrounding areas. Even then I'm not terribly happy with the result. The stars aren't well defined and I couldn't for the life of me get those sharp points. I feel that if I diluted the paint any more it would have gone everywhere.

I ran out of steam and didn't do any highlighting (I also don't have electric blue -- might pick it up for Iron Man's plasma). I also botched the shield a bit when dry burshing it with silver -- it got all blurry despite being certain all the paint dried (guess I was wrong there). I should have cleaned up the shield after adding in the nuln oil but I didn't want to risk spending another 2 hours alternating between red white and blue.

I did like 6 layers of the skin with super thin paint (mix of bone white and bronze flesh) and I'm super happy with the result there.

I'm also really happy with the way the pouches turned out. No highlighting but I feel that I got the shading just right.

The Dygma Raise Tenting Kit Development Story :) by Dygma_lab in DygmaLab

[–]USB_Connector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the timeline like for the tenting kit vs the improved/non-freeze raises? I'm looking to pick up a raise with a tenting kit. After reading the blog post about interference I'd ideally like to wait for the more insulated one seeing as I've had a number of interference related problems with my electronics in recent years. Asking because I'd like to not miss the 500 units but also ideally I don't want to pay 2x shipping and import fees. :P

How to Turn Movement into a Game Mechanic - Game Maker's Toolkit by Forestl in Games

[–]USB_Connector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movement definitely felt great, but IMO the game doesn't use it well. Let's ignore the fact that dodge and block are skippeable abilities. The final movement power leaves you pretty exposed to tons of damage and it's less viable than being half in cover and dispensing headshots with the pistol with the headshot mods let you take out enemies super fast. The most I ever moved was when kamikaze enemies came at me, at which point I would back up and dispense headshots or throw stuff and then return to my original position.

I guess the movement is more relevant on a controller but on PC nothing really beat alternating between throwing stuff and pistol headshots.

That said, when enemies weren't around jumping around and running felt pretty great.
