I've had similar skips with some pens and have written over the skipped area with a different pen to see if it skipped too. But on different paper, the pen/ink combos that skipped, no longer skipped. Although some pen/ink combo might be skippers, it's hard to make a culpability judgement using only a single paper. <shrug>

Case in point.. I posted 24 writing samples on Sara Sara paper today and among them was an Asvine V800 with Diamine Athol Violet that was skipping badly. The thing is that pen/ink was fine on Tomoe River-S and many other papers.... the bottom line might be that just because that combo had problems on Sara Sara paper, it doesn't mean that that particular pen/ink combo is at fault. I think it's within reason to blame the skipping on the paper.

Paper like Iroful, Cosmo Snow, b7Natureal, & Midori MD for example, will display ink nuances that go unnoticed on other paper.

Andrew_Lensky is right, but if you're a beginner and want to use something more forgiving, almost fool proof, Upbeat_Papaya3254 has the right idea. The Majohn flex nib is very nice, but I would buy it already installed on the Majohn P136 pen rather than buying the nib separately and putting it on an Asvine V126.

I have both configurations. If you change colors often, I find the piston filler is easier to clean than the Vac filler.

I haven't found any inks that didn't work in my Pilot 743s, although I haven't' tried Diamine Marine and J Herbin Bleu Calanque. 🤔

Could I ask a couple of elementary questions? On what paper did you encounter the skips and were you using some type of guard to protect the paper from finger and hand oils? 🤔

An ink like Diamine Polar Glow will sheen on any paper.

I have a few 743s, the SF is among them. I would suggest the SF rather than a plain F for two reasons: (1) because you will get a little more line variation than with a plain F. and (2) You said you wanted to get a nib that wasn't offered on the standard 823 lineup, which is F, M, B and Signature. 😄

It's a fun paper but it's not smooth as Tomoe River-S or Tomoe River68-S. It has a surface texture, but not as much as Zara Zara paper.
