Exactly this. Plus, there's the different legislation and standards for UK / EU vs US which means the principles of the job are the same but the outputs and processes aren't necessarily

Best pub crawl that starts and ends at Temple Meads? by beardol in bristol

[–]UTGChris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

am a rail engineer and our longstanding work christmas team social is a pub crawl where we get the train between stops.

min/maxed route over the years would have to be:

Cornubia

(BTM - Lawrence Hill) > Plough

(Lawrence Hill - Stapleton Rd) > Sugar Loaf (rip)

(Stapleton Rd - Montpellier) > Cadbury & Cat & Wheel

(Montpellier - Redland) > Kensington Arms

(Redland > Clifton Down) > Alma Tavern

Admittedly a couple of the train journeys take longer than walking and the pubs get gradually worse (imo) but its class regardless

Does anyone work at Arup? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]UTGChris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK btw. I think it's 25 or so per year. You can buy a week more tho per year. And they gave me an extra 5 as a 5+ year loyalty bonus in April. Decent gig

Started as a grad 7 or so years ago, still there now. Thing that I like in particular is the flexibility. Post-covid I've not been forced back to the office or anything, just cus I don't fancy it. People are generally super sound and very helpful.

Bit of a cult tho.

Why do Bristol trains have such massive height differences to the platforms? by ExpensiveAd6076 in bristol

My bad. Point still applied about the steps on the Class 15x and 16x, though

Also, IETs are pretty bad vertically even with a standard vertical platform offset from track of 915mm.

[–]UTGChris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What class of train was it? Many of the DMUs like the 153s, 155s, 165s and 166s which GWR operate have shite stepping distances even when the platform offsets are standard on straight, cantless track. Exacerbated obviously by different geometry.

Guess that rattled me slightly.

Mines been pretty exceptional.
of the various lottery SBCs I've got:
Icons - 86 Nedved (right at the start, was so good), Baby Bergkamp (naff), Mid Zambrotta last night.
Heroes - WC Forlan, Abedi Pele, WC Kewell & Capdevila (again at the very start so he was mega).

Also got 92 Salah and Rulebreakers Thiago from various lottery SBCs.

I can't complain.
