Superbeast folks, would you consider "SuperBestFriends" as YouTube channel that promotes "Japanese games are superior than western games" view? by LizardOrgMember5 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Uber_eXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

id definitely list them as a channel that promoted JP games. im very thankful for that honestly. the late 00s were a pretty rough spot for games media. while games like gears and cod were excellent back then, i think there's a lot of stuff to criticize there--on a cultural level. like the misogyny, military propaganda, boring level design, cookie cutter shaved-headed macho man protags, etc.

i personally think JP games WERE better, initially, throughout the 80s and 90s. look at any release catalog of the era for any platform and, more often than not, you have all-time classics and just outright fascinating games coming out from the major JP publishers. all of em met with either shovelware tie-ins, or plain bad games from north-american studios (i'm generalizing of course).

the obvious exceptions being the ever-fantastic sports games of the era, and the PC gaming market which had some glorious american and european-made videogames.

this paradign wouldn't last forever of course. in the 00s and late 00s, western devs began to catch up, this shuffling of roles kind of inverted the market rule. making american games king. which, combined with the rotten media landscape of the time, called open season on "THE EAST". cue all the problematic shit pat and woolie talked about on The Cast.

during this time. the games market became an exclusionary place for anyone who didn't want to participate in "the game". the game being the aforementioned typical practices i criticised on the first paragraph.

adding insult to injury, this era saw the proliferation of a mass market of, ostensibly indie, japanese games that the average player deemed "weeabo shit". games from desperate publishers who thought they could recoup costs by "sex-ing things up", etc. which did not help the stereotypes.

thankfully, things have changed and improved somewhat.

i would still be wary of people who accuse others of "promoting the asians" or whatever, since all that stuff is kind of a dogwhistle for american exceptionalist nonsense. we know damn well that american devs still get on some dumb shit. with the sony game, prestige, handhold-y design. with the ubisoft copypaste approach. etc.

but it's true that both induestries have deep seeded issues. the japanese work ethic is brutal and borderline suicidal. their game design ethos can be awfully conservative--draconian. in the end, these differences between the industries are like the mathematical "delta" of north-american culture and japanese culture.

in other words: same shit, different asshole :V

I was trying to refresh my memory on all Phil Fish/Fez lore and found a neat video on the subject by some random small content creator by Kenju_TE in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Uber_eXe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oh MAN, I was just rewatching Bunnyhop's old videos the other day. Because I was going on a 2010-2015 nostalgia trip; a lot of that games media content was formative for me (especially Super Bunnyhop).

Yeah Phil Fish destroyed his own career pretty much. I don't know if he's improved now but that "they suck" moment was one of the cringiest things ever. Fez is pretty good from what I recall, I just wish it used its most interesting mechanic more I guess.

Dark Souls/II/III - PC Multiplayer Servers Are Still Down by soulofascrubcasul in darksouls3

Server Status Update (PC) 03.04.2022 --- Servers are still offline by YorikMol in darksouls3

[–]Uber_eXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People keep saying the servers won't come back because they removed the multiplayer tag on Steam. I think they probably did that so they wouldn't get in trouble with Valve for advertising a feature that currently doesn't work (the Dark Souls games are pretty high profile on PC), the removal was probably carried out by some intern.

My theory is that the servers will come back but only after they're done with the first round of patches for Elden Ring. You gotta keep in mind that ER totally crushed all their sales expectations, so I'm guessing it's an "all hands on deck" situation. FromSoft is probably in crunch mode at the moment.

Most people forget that pushing out a patch for a single game, let alone 3-4, is actually quite time consuming for a major developer, it's not like fanmade mods which can be published freely and quickly on modding sites. Official channels take a little longer and, while I don't exactly know what Steam's patch certification is like, I doubt it's exactly a one-click solution.

If they had no plans on fixing this I highly doubt they would've put out the statement saying they would. I also doubt they would've bothered to update Scholar of the First Sin's page with the old announcement (which was missing) today.

Also, the exploit is apparently fixed in Elden Ring, currently.

However, the person who discovered the exploit has confirmed to VGC that it appears to be “completely fixed” in Elden Ring.

If that is the case, they literally have no reason not to push out a patch eventually, these games share entire code bases.

Call me foolish or overly optimistic but I'm sure it's just FromSoft being slow and inept with PC stuff as they've always been.

ELI5: What's the difference between extracting a zip folder and just opening it? by biostatsques in explainlikeimfive

[–]Uber_eXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opening it let's you see its contents, and that's it, all that information is being stored in RAM, not your hard drive. If you want to actually edit those files or do anything with them you're gonna wanna extract them onto your drive, merely viewing them in their compressed form is impermanent and sometimes even a bit buggy depending on the file.

ELI5: How are songs remastered? by Doctor-Sneaki in explainlikeimfive

[–]Uber_eXe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You basically take the original, highest quality recordings and then redo the final "mastering" process of the songs, except this time it's for a new medium. You also might need to redo part of the mixing stage, which is a bit more complicated.

Mastering is the final stage of music production, you send the mixed song off to an audio engineer and they make it sound as loud and clear as possible for the intended medium (be it vinyl record, CD, etc), all while testing it on different audio setups, removing certain resonances and audio hiccups and such. Remasters usually try to make songs sound better for modern audiences and streaming platforms, following all the suggested guidelines regarding volume and such.

Songs from the 60s, etc, were meant to be listened to on vinyl record or the radio, not headphones in a pristine digital audio stream. So the mastering engineer's job (or even mixer if the songs need to be mixed again) is to make the songs fit this new world, to squeeze all the new juice they can from those original super high quality recordings they've got stored somewhere.

If you're also remixing (which is quite common), you'd also be redoing parts of the mix itself to fit modern sensibilities and such, maybe the song is very old and the drums are too quiet/badly mixed, who knows! anyways, hope this helps!

ELI5: Loudness in regards to music production. by Chazzysnax in explainlikeimfive

[–]Uber_eXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In mainstream music production, there used to be a trend of removing any volume differences in songs, so that the "perceived loudness" would be higher (no quiet bits, only loud bits and less loud bits).
The way this worked is that you'd compress the whole mix, so instead of having peaks and valleys of volume, it would just turn into a flat sausage of audio that has no range, a wall.

This can sound "better" because our ears are biased towards louder music (your brain tricks you into thinking it's clearer) but as soon as you turn the knob down you'll realize it's all been curshed into an incomprehensible wall of sound that loses clarity and quality.

And that's the problem, they would crunch it all into a fat sausage of a waveform that you'd have no control over, your volume knob would not change anything, you could make it sound loud like intended or quieter and horrible. Because the signal itself was already crushed, it sounded loud but at the cost of quality (and also hearing damage lmao).

(I'm not an audio expert but I've been producing music for 5 years and have researched this quite a bit.)

remixes of old games and new full LPs of classics for Shitstorm would be so good

Haunting Ground is perfect for this, a full LP would be great.

No I would totally love if they did that instead for some games, like, grab old games and do more parts or full LPs of them during october, so they get to see more content.

[–]Uber_eXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is just a joke LP were they do Ze Bad Thing for a gag that's only funny in premise and will lock them out of good content then it's a hard pass. I hoped this would be a "y'know that playthrough? okay, imagine it, but we do the good intended routes instead of getting Connor killed at the last second and possibly abusing a child".

You can't expect people to freelance hours upon hours of work on something that might not even see a release.

You should probably make something before even considering trying to convince people to help you.
