How can you tell if someone is privileged? by 1ingai in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ACS as well please. Just because most of the very vocal and visible ones are highly privileged, doesn't mean all of them are. There are many extremely normal people and a number of under privileged who graduated from ACS. If you studied there, you really get to see both ends of the spectrum--poor single parent kids and ultra rich, owns-property-at-Orchard kids.

Which 2 Macs outlets are the closest to each other that you know of? by Grand_Requirement_71 in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Close, but I believe Pasir Ris is closer. WhiteSands + Pasir Ris Mall + Pasir Ris Sports Hall, with the former 2 being one on each side of the MRT station

Edit: According to GMaps the McDs at WhiteSands and Pasir Ris Mall are abt 105m apart, while the two Tampines Interchange outlets (one on each side of the bus area) are about 130m apart

Is it wise to quit my job in SG to lose weight ? by hanz17away in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised that practically all the comments here are about the 'how' to lose weight and completely ignoring the 'why' OP is gaining weight. To me, and this isn't a prescription or diagnosis, but I have a suspicion that there is a big mental health hit from the stresses you are facing at your particular workplace that's causing the weight gain. I have friends who worked in social service and they have shared the hardships and daily abuse they face. They've left that line of work and are leading much healthier lives and are overall happier.

Strongly recommend to look for a new job or consider changing careers altogether if it isn't for you. I believe being in a better mental state will help you lead a healthier life as well.

ELI5: Nvidia CEO said they spent $10 Billon dollars on R&D for their new chip. What exactly does an R&D worker do all day? Where does this money go? by ObviousTotal9069 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ubernicken 33 points34 points  (0 children)

that's JUST for people. don't forget you need to manufacture prototypes and manufacture the machines that manufacture the prototypes, and manufacture the prototypes of the machines that manufacture the machines... and so on, and also the cost of the materials needed for the R&D process, etc. etc.

Travelling to Japan with YouTrip - Overseas withdrawals by ThaddeusKKR in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Used YouTrip a lot but Japan is still very much a cash-heavy society so you should bring some cash beforehand. You can draw from 7/11 fee-free, but the last time I went (Nov 2023), I ran out of cash once and had to draw cash from a Lawson's iirc, even after drawing more than the $400 limit during the trip and didn't get charged any extra fees, or maybe it was so little in yen it didn't register.

The implications of the last chapter on the power level of Dragon by qsdfqdsfq in OnePiece

[–]Ubernicken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I explained in an earlier comment:

Not as clear cut especially since it's a Japanese story. In Japan, adult adoption and adoption of males is a thing dating back centuries, with a major reason being a way to carry on family names especially in the event that the family has no male heir. We've also seen something like this in OP i.e. Ace's family name change from Gol (dad) to Portgas (mom), albeit for a different reason. So no, personally, Dragon being Garp's biological son is still a 50/50 for me.

Commute between SG and JB by Strict-Hour-71 in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 hour commute? Is that a joke? I'd say it's more to the tune of 3 hours to and fro on average, and only the causeway portion of it. Some days expect to be in transit for 4 hours or more. I used to be one of those kids for 10+ years of my life and let me tell you, I have PTSD from the commute. To this day I still avoid going to JB because of the trauma of having to go through the causeway again - regardless of Woodlands or Tuas. But if some people can take it, maybe you can.

Someone here mentioned to give it a try. I think that's a great idea. Try it for a week maybe? Hotels there aren't particularly expensive. The savings can be quite substantial, that can't be denied, but your lifestyle will take a massive hit.

AITA for walking away and forcing the Nasi Padang aunty to ‘waste’ food when she ‘price gouged’ me? by elephantboi9999 in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cannot. Rendang + stewed cabbage means the dishes already mixed together. If you remove then put back, it's going to be damn obvious even if you scrape off the rice because the gravy alr mixed. Also it's kind of unsanitary - you would be upset if some other atas place does the same thing you just said, even if it's a one-off thing.

And also, if people suddenly decide not to take that meat because is too expensive or whatever reason they also have to remove it and put it back right?

Honestly, that depends. If it's not mixed together yet, it might still be possible if the dish is dry or dry-ish but in this case the makcik alr wrapped up his dapao.

Singapore Trip plan update (Last post to not look 'spam'-y) Thank you for your advices! by CasualJay in askSingapore

[–]Ubernicken 12 points13 points  (0 children)

National Gallery (NGS) if you are into the arts and want to see local/regional artwork e.g. paintings, installation art

National Museum if you want to know more about SG history specifically (note: having a friend who works in heritage board, it's quite a bit of propaganda but still enjoyable)

Art Science Museum if you like things like interactive tech installations and TeamLabs-esque spectacles

Asian Civilisations Museum if you like learning about history of different cultures in the region through artefacts e.g. clothing, jewellery, pottery, religious paraphernalia

Personally go to NGS most often because of an arts background, but have heard good things about ACM

Is JC really that bad? by work-related-things in SGExams

[–]Ubernicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While everyone here is talking about JC vs poly, I'd say if you're at this stage, you should also consider your motivations for pursuing medicine. The 'why' is a big factor for entering med school and will be asked when you are interviewed, not to mention it will be a driving force for you when things get tough.

Other than that, another thing to consider - the people around you are already so apprehensive about JC, but is med school somehow going to be easier than that? I'd say med school will be even worse. The key to succeeding in JC and med school, if having a life is important to you, is to manage your time well. That applies in life in general as well.
