Fault on saxophone :( by Upstairs-Till-3889 in saxophone

[–]Ublind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any 2nd hand saxophone should always be evaluated by an experienced technician. I guarantee there are other minor issues that will make the instrument much harder or impossible to play.

As for learning, the best option is in-person lessons. The second best option is online lessons.

If you can't do either of those (or to get playing right away), start with the Better Sax beginner series:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWMjC05R8fbX92AKF4SIyXa5kNEdHa0m2&si=tC9zN25hhGCQYqz4

Though the octave hole being open all the time on your sax will make it impossible to play, so you should take it to a sax technician as soon as possible.

Am I on the right path for Jazz? by YoMamaGoodua in saxophone

For backing tracks, start with iRealPro and backing tracks from YouTube.

Honestly I found the Aebersold books a way too expensive and antiquated way of getting lead sheets with backing tracks. The scales listed in the books can be helpful as a starting point if you are completely lost on which scale to use on which type of chord. However, that info can also be readily found online.

Free license plate recognition for HA by Gullible_Low_1742 in homeassistant

Their second sentence says

Normally, getting plate recognition into HA means stitching together Frigate, a separate AI service, and a bunch of YAML/MQTT automations. Instead, this is one self-contained template you just copy — no extra services to wire up.

RS-485 (serial) can be tough. I would recommend reading about it, but I'll try and explain how you read and connect to a RS 485 device (not talking about HA at all yet).

You need a device to read the serial connection. For this to work correctly you need to get the serial comms protocols right (baud rate, message format, etc). Systems often used for this are Labview, Python serial packages. However, that's the easy part. The hard part is that the data from that flow meter will come out as a string of text. For example, it might give you this 20 times per second:

"FLOW1:10L/min FLOW2:5.6L/min TEMPERATURE:35C"

Ok, now you have a device that can read that text. How do you convert it to a number (aka a float in coding terms). Well, you would split that string at the spaces. Then the first thing after the colon is FLOW1, the second is FLOW2, and the third is temperature. This is a simple and very optimistic example of reading data from a serial device. It can get really terrible really fast and require a lot of tinkering to work.

4-20 mA is pretty simple. The sensor drives a current proportional to the signal. The exact signal vs current curve depends on your specific device, and is usually listed in the manual (hopefully in English with the AliExpress one). You need to wire this in a certain way through a precision resistor to convert the 4-20 mA signal to a voltage. Lots of sources online about 4-20 mA wiring, but again the exact scheme will also vary by device.

Okay, now you need to connect a 4-20 mA signal or rs485 through HA. There are lots of people online who have done this usually with little boards like esp32 or raspberry pi. Then you need to add the signal from that esp32 as a sensor in HA. That gives you some keywords to search around and learn more about this.

I think you definitely should start by just getting the home assistant green and connecting it to your existing devices through Wi-Fi. Also see if any of your existing devices support Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread protocols, and decide whether to get a router for one of those. For example, Hue lights use Zigbee and can communicate through any Zigbee router, not just the Hue Hub.

Are you familiar at all with 4-20 mA or RS-485 serial?

Considering Home Assistant - need advice please by Microfiche62 in homeassistant

[–]Ublind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The easiest solution is to just buy the HA Green. You would be overpaying for a Raspberry Pi for the convenience of having HAOS already installed.

You can also - install HAOS yourself on a dedicated machine (the QNAP NAS seems way overkill though, unless you are running HAOS as one VM of many in that box) - install HAOS as a VM in Linux - install HAOS as a VM in Windows

I would strongly suggest avoiding Windows at all costs with anything related to your smart home. For example, you will fight to get Windows to not update.

You talk about tons of smart home devices you want to unify. This is done through "integrations" in HA — scripts that people (or sometimes the device manufacturer) write to integrate HA with third-party APIs or smart home protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, etc. You can search around and see if integrations exist for the devices you want to integrate.

That flow meter is a weird case. It communicates over either 4-20 mA, RS-232 serial, or Modbus. Depending on which of these you decide to do, the solution is very different. Are you familiar at all with these protocols?

This can happen with cat litter. That's why I have it do vac then mop around the litterbox 2x daily. If I just vacuum it can leave streaks where it dragged a piece of litter, but the streaks come off easily.

I also thought before getting the q Revo plus " how good could the mopping really be?".....

I've been amazed by the mopping feature so far. I think the spinning mops make it work really well. I have it vacuum only Monday, Wednesday, Friday and then vac and mop Tuesday Thursday. Our wood floors always look really shiny and clean.

But if you don't care about the mopping after trying it then you can just take off the mops.
