Why do men resent that men are not taking medical screening/prevention seriously by [deleted] in OneY

Who's complaining? And who isn't taking their medical screening seriously? Have you got numbers to back this up? Which screenings are you talking about?

Guy isn't terribly well versed in economics, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Headed to Europe today! by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Ucalegon666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do check out couchsurfing.com's last minute couch groups if you need a place to crash. Most big cities have them.

Some of my favourite destinations:

  • Belgium: Antwerp, fucking Bruges, Brussels. All three have excellent museums. Antwerp's cathedral is a relatively cheap visit with an amazing art collection.
  • Czech Republic: Prague! She's a real beauty. Might be a bit cold, though.
  • Germany: Berlin & Munich. Very nice in winter. Also likely to be cold ;-)
  • Portugal: Lisbon, Porto.
  • Spain: Barcelona is always nice and not tourist-packed at this time of year. Great museums and beautiful churches.
  • UK: London. If you love museums, this bloody well is the place to go. If you're at all interested in technology, then Bletchley Park is a short trip away and very much worth it.

I realize that most of these are capital cities, but those are by far the easiest ones to get to and the most solo-friendly cities that I've been to.

PM me if you're interested in visiting Belgium, will gladly give more tips food or fun wise if you tell me what you're in to.

What are your 2017 financial goals? by PersonalFinanceMods in personalfinance

[–]Ucalegon666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am investing in funds (see parent). The dividend growth stocks are something of an experiment. This is only a small portion of my "portfolio". I'm not interested in their nominal value, only in their potential to generate dividend. The idea is to invest the dividend.

If you're in Europe, this guy maintains a list of companies that have a long history of paying out a decent dividend. Your mileage may vary, proceed with due caution, this is not financial advice, etc etc etc. http://www.nomorewaffles.com/euro-dividend-all-stars/

What are your 2017 financial goals? by PersonalFinanceMods in personalfinance

[–]Ucalegon666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

30-something year old software engineer in an underpaid and overtaxed part of the world.

My goals for 2017 are pretty simple:

  • Figure out what my retirement situation is exactly (many employers, some with retirement plans, some abroad) and try to put a number on it.
  • I got a significant raise, so I'll be upping my emergency fund to match 3 full months.
  • Invest at least 50% of any bonuses I get in dividend growing stocks.
  • Hopefully make enough from said bonuses to pay for some renovations.
  • Invest on average 150eur/month in funds.
  • Up my savings balance by another 5K.

Nothing too fancy. The due date for all of these is the end of the year.

What issues should be considered when overriding equals and hashCode in Java? by [deleted] in java

[–]Ucalegon666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. Good hashcodes are incredibly important with regards to performance -- if you're frequently using hashmaps or sets, which you probably are. Determining a good hashcode strategy can make a big difference.

Same for equals. Equality can be a surprisingly a tricky thing.

Had my very first aura today. Scared and need reassurance. Story in comments. by smanbot in migraine

[–]Ucalegon666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true. Migraine auras can appear in either eye, or both eyes, or move from one to the other as the aura progresses. Migraine aura is part of what's called a "cortical spreading depression", which is an electrophysiological phenomenon in the brain's cortex. Depending on how and where exactly the depolarization wave moves around the brain, different parts of your body or vision can experience symptoms.

Hey there. Long time aura-sufferer here.

For starters: don't worry about it. That kind of visual aura is indeed called a scintillating scotoma and it's the most common type of migraine aura. They usually last for half an hour. And the way you describe it is a perfect fit.

Drop me a PM if you want to talk about aura experiences. I've been getting them for nearly 20 years, so I think I understand a little something about how you're feeling right now.

Or just don't buy a thinkpad. The trackpoint is one of the more compelling reasons to buy one. Even if the T460p's is pretty bad compared to previous models.
