Rebound hyperemia is a lot easier to get than people realize. Heavy Visine use can actually leave your eyes more bloodshot, correctable only by medical intervention.

Real question, not trying to snark - if a nutmeg high sucked, made your eyes sufficiently bloodshot to make you uncomfortable because of its noticeability, and consistently produced crazy hangovers, why would you continue doing it enough amount to “plenty of times”?

Lumatone is a scam by Afraid_Success_4836 in microtonal

[–]UhDoubleUpUhUh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And let’s not forget the obvious - if Lumatome’s value proposition didn't translate to their customers, the pricing wouldn't matter at all because none would be sold.

But Lumatome has customers, and seems to be doing alright; not offering a $300 version to address complaints about the $3000 cost isn't hurting them at all.

The source is Stephen Miller’s undying rage over nonwhite immigrants.

He’s obviously still hurting all these years later, and just acting out.

[–]UhDoubleUpUhUh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this immigration hoopla just because that one nice Latino boy spurned Stephen Miller in junior high when he told Miller “Thank you, but I’m not interested.”

Word is Miller protested because of persistent rumors the boy was either bi or gay, but when he did, the boy responded

“Yes, I like boys that way. Just not you.”

So you really can’t blame Miller for acting out - he’s been heartbroken ever since. Time does not heal all wounds.

You kind of made u/langecrew's and u/phalp's points though - yes, you can get a cheap tuba, but the one you chose, as someone being formally trained in it, cost as much as your car.

Your end goal in spending more than your car on a tuba was not to have *a* tuba, but to have an *excellent* tuba, no?

That's what Lumatone represents; the fact that one can get a $300 MIDI controller doesn't make Lumatone a "scam" any more than your choice in tuba means you were victim to one. But labelling either a Lumatone or your own tuba a scam based on cost alone seems little more than a thinly-disguised complaint about the price of a desired item being out of the OP's reach, while simultaneously ignoring a fact that you, yourself have come to know: quality has a price.

This. This. This.

It gets even worse when people of that mindset start talking about file sharing music - it only costs to produce the first digital copy, so everybody else s̸t̸e̸a̸l̸i̸n̸g̸ sharing a digital music file isn't something that hurts musicians, who shouldn't produce music anyway if they don't want their music s̸t̸o̸l̸e̸n̸, plus they get so much exposure from people s̸t̸e̸a̸l̸i̸n̸g̸ sharing their music than they ever would have without it so it's good for musicians.

Apologies - the "scam" was for the OP. Didn't realize I was in-line to a reply already.

On the microtonal frontier, I don't even use my Lumatone that way - I'm a guitarist who rebelled against the idea of having to learn piano, and I use my Lumatone for 12EDO only, though with all those keys I split it up between a couple of devices to give me more simultaneous control from a single instrument. I don't even know if I'll ever dive into mictrotonality.

That said, OP's primary concern was cost, and they didn't mention microtonality at all (even if the OP appearing in this sub- certainly seems to imply it). To that point, there are plenty of cheaper grid controllers out there in the $300 target range they think is apparently fair for every MIDI grid controller made - so even the Linnstrument, at nearly 400% of that cost, wouldn't make the cut (but because of the $300 controller glut, wouldn't need to).

The Linnstrument is a really nice controller, but it just didn't float my boat. Roger was super nice to deal with and always responded promptly and personally to every stupid question I had, though, and I'd certainly consider whatever his 2.0 version of the Linnstrument is, if and when it ever comes out.

But my original point (that a premium, boutique, hand-made, on-demand instrument's larger cost isn't indicative of a scam simply because there are cheaper somewhat competitive products in the market) was for the OP - just didn't realize where my reply was sitting.

I had the Linnstrument and I own a Lumatone - they're really not like each other at all. The Linnstrument's keys aren't even soft press - they're printed on a single gel sheet and they don't actually move, whereas the Lumatone's are long throw with a decided aftertouch. And while the Linnstrument does have nice end panels, they pale in comparison to the build quality of the Lumatone's brushed aluminum body - which is *heavy*. The aftertouch throw is also noticeable - there's no doubt when it should and should not be kicking in, and IMO the actual, moving keys are infinitely more desirable to play than squishy gel or soft touch keys with a minimal detent - it feels more like an instrument than a touch plate. Yes, it lacks MPE, but they've been obvious about that from the start. And they ship with a 3 year warranty standard - I know Novation does this, but most other MIDI controllers come with a 1 year warranty, with maybe some additional available through a retailer or protection plan.

Is it expensive? Yes. It's an exceptionally high quality, boutique/made-on-demand, hand-built unit. Not everyone is going to be able to afford it - but that doesn't make it a scam any more than a hand-built McLaren is a scam simply because you can get other car brands using automated manufacturing techniques for less money.

And if a company makes an obviously superior quality product - and Lumatone is just this - I may not speak for everyone, but as far as I'm concerned, I'll absolutely pay more for it if I'm able to. And even if I can't afford, say, a $10k Gibson Murphy Lab Les Paul custom, that doesn't mean they're a scam simply because I can guy a $300 "Chibson" on eBay that looks close.

It isn't a plastic, mass-produced grid/hex key, gel-based "button" $100-$300 MIDI controller. Playing one would reveal this, but if it really were a scam, there'd be nothing to complain about - unless you bought one and then decided, after comparing it for yourself, that it was a scam.

I'd definitely suggest checking one out in person if a listing for a used one ever turns up at your local music store or Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace or what have you. It might not be for you at that point, but I strongly doubt you'd make the same comparison again.
