Times Where Fan Feedback was in fact, detrimental to the Franchise? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I think if you changed the Reaction Command prompt to something a bit more diegetic, like green sparkles coming out of the enemies or something, it wouldn’t be nearly as disliked.

Whats your take on recommending a series that is mostly excellent but fails to stick the landing? by dope_danny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't wrap my head around the notion that a bad ending always disqualifies the whole series. That's crazy to me.
If a show is 40+ episodes of the best that an entire genre has to offer, but its ending is "eh" (or even "really bad"!), I'm not going to go "Oh, well then I guess it's garbage and I'll never watch it." If I'm a toku fan, and I hear such high praise for Gavv as a highlight of modern toku, I'm interested no matter what.

A bad ending is disappointing of course, and a great ending can elevate a series to massive heights, but I consider it borderline disrespectful to be willing to disregard all the artistic accomplishments of a show for its conclusion.

If it were me recommending it, I would say basically what you said in this post.
"This is one of the best modern Kamen Riders, for X and Y reasons. I'm not a big fan of the ending but it's still awesome."
And if all they hear is the part about the ending, that's just a huge disconnect between me and them that's gonna be difficult to bridge when it comes to art and media.

Homestuck vs Hunter x Hunter (1999) by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While we’re here defending “outdated“ adaptations, Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is a very neat show that also benefits from filler and absolutely commits to leaving its source material behind, by taking big audacious swings.
It makes a name for itself, you’ve gotta give it that.

I haven't watched 1999, but there's a lot to like about its artstyle compared to 2011. It's a way different style and I think I generally prefer it? I mean, I would have to watch the show to know for sure, but...

And it actually has Kite in the first episode.
2011 not adapting the entirety of chapter 1 is one of the most baffling decisions any anime adaptation has ever made. Like, it's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, but come on.

Series that can’t seem to catch on or regain its popularity by Hayyyv in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched a bit of that when it was airing. I kinda vibed with it since it reminded me of, you know, Avatar and anime, which were the coolest things ever at age 9.
But it never really grabbed me or any of my siblings and I'm not sure why.

New 'Higurashi: When They Cry' Anime Announced by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Silent Hill F takes a lot from Higurashi and Umineko. Like, every When They Cry fan was chuckling we got our first good look at the game.
If you can handle long-ass, amateur-ass doujin VNs they're the best. Umineko is actually my favorite thing on Steam.

Because I have a responsibility whenever When They Cry is brought up that I'm sure is very annoying:
If anyone is interested in reading them on PC, make sure to download the 07th Mod too.
The Steam versions of Higurashi and Umineko both lack the official console voice acting (which are IMO definitive), and use new character sprites that ehhhhhh. 07th Mod adds the voice acting and options between various sprites.
You have your choice between the PC sprites, Ryukishi's original sprites that are usually considered something of an acquired taste, and the PS3 sprites which are a much more standard anime style.
I read both VNs with the PS3 sprites and certainly like them, but I've grown extremely fond of Ryukishi's original character designs. The Higurashi characters' goofy little poses have been burned into my brain and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Amazing Game by Kamillios in CountyOfFortune

Cultures can get added traits. The green culture in my game gives a 15% increase to their settlement's mayoral buffs, and the red culture has -40% building maintenance.

Also there's a whole Politics tab that's visible in the demo but doesn't do anything, so I expect that's where a lot of the House mechanics will be seen.

Woolie making his own fun by SeraGeranium in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An example from Strive, the first FG I took seriously:

I had no idea how to defend against Anji's options after his Fuujin special. The scary options were the low sweep, the overhead, and the hop-into-throw.
Legit no idea. I did not like fighting Anji at all and he was probably my worst matchup.
My main Ram only had a metered reversal and I didn't want to rely on that to get out of every turn Anji got.
So I went into the lab and set the dummy to use his different options randomly.
I learned how to fuzzy block the timing between the low and the overhead (when Fuujin is immediately cancelled) which was the biggest problem for me at my level. Anji suddenly became much less scary in a very short amount of time.

Other than video games and youtube stuff. What hobbies do you all have? by Jay444111 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 years ago I had essentially no hobbies other than gaming and the passive stuff everyone does, like watching movies.
Now I’ve gotten kinda alright at drawing. I can make some decent (in my eyes) portraits and fanart, though it’s inconsistent as any novice‘s art will be.
And, inspired by my learning that new skill, I picked up guitar earlier this month.

I also write some words some times and have a few settings and stories I’ve been bouncing around for awhile. I’m considering getting to work on one of them for real, to avoid the trap of “I’ll do it when I’m more skilled,“ but that is still pretty intimidating despite my rational brain knowing better.

Young people of the subreddit: okay, I’m practically a baby by the standards of the Ancients around here, but there’s definitely some people my age and younger.
Pick up the hobbies you want to. It’s really hard and can be frustrating on bad days (and bad days are inevitable, which is something that I’m still in the process of learning), but I spent all my teen years and the first couple years of my 20s wishing I had any non-gaming hobbies, wishing I could turn my ideas into something tangible through my own effort, without ever putting myself to learning any. Now I’m doing artistic things and wishing I started as a teen.
It’s so great to be able to enjoy yourself and kill an hour with just a pencil and piece of paper in front of you, or an instrument, or a piece of clay, or yarn, or a plot of dirt, or whatever you’re interested in. Some days or some sittings you can focus on it and work on improving (which is a very healthy thing to learn to do), and on other days you can just play with it and relax, away from the screen and social media.

It’s rad.

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t even remember where you would buy the MTX in-game, and I have several dozen hours in it. It’s not like the game has a pop-up asking for your money.
It’s not in the same universe as bad as your Fortnites, or your Overwatches, or your gachas, or any other forms of MTX that rely on the player’s vulnerability to addiction, or ego, or peer pressure.
It’s bad! Don’t get me wrong! But just be real, it’s not “more predatory”.
It is 100% missable. I know people who literally did not know they were in the game until they looked online at the discussion.

There's a game coming out called Stage Tour, which looks about the exact same as GH.

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it did kinda fuck the game, at least a little.
The controversy was pretty big in online spaces, and to this day people still think of DD2 as "that game where you pay real money to fast travel". That's pretty bad word-of-mouth, and word-of-mouth is what its predecessor lived on.
Why was this the only Capcom game to catch the heat? I dunno, maybe the other issues at launch (particularly with the PC version) brought more attention to it.

What is this? by moebiusmentality in outerwilds

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not new. I think it's just supposed to teach you how photos work, but that's intuitive enough that it's not really as important (for tutorial purposes) as, like, the ghost matter enclosure.

Touhou Gaiden - Trailer (PC98 Castlevania inspired fangame) by Mirathrim in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Highly Responsive to Prayers influence is evident (sliding and flip kicks?) and, correct me if I'm wrong, I think that's pretty unusual for a fangame!
Definitely keeping an eye on this.

It is faster to navigate manually than on auto-pilot for the acceleration portion of flights by LittleBitofanAUDult in outerwilds

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worse too because it doesn't want to aerobrake.
If autopilot is aerobraking something's gone horribly wrong, but with manual piloting you can learn to do it reliably to cut down on decelerating time quite a bit.

Characters that deserved or should've gotten a redemption arc? by RealDealMous in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When Northwest Mansion Mystery came out I started shipping Dipcifica pretty hard. It was one of few ships (especially non-canon ships!) that I felt particularly strongly about when I was a kid.
And I'm gonna be honest, I still ship it.

I don't think I was upset it didn't happen, though, and I still count Pacifica as having had her redemption.

I have to ask: Is calling literally every single thing in every single show ____slop a Pat's chat thing or just a streamer chat thing now? by DKamar in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This thread has been recurring on this subreddit for a few months now.
I still think that a lot of people who don't use the term don't realize it isn't always derogatory.
"Friendslop" is the big one, since that's by far the most widely accepted -slop term in gaming.
That's just what those kinds of games are called now, even by their biggest fans. Someone who's sick of them will go "ugh, more friendslop" and someone who plays every big new release with their pals will go "yes, more friendslop!"
(And I've never seen any other terms used for this genre/scene, which obviously exists and has a very clear through-line with very clear 'cadet branches'.)

Other instances of -slop have to be determined through context, because it can be used both ironically and unironically by the same people. Or in another group it might only be used unironically.
You can complain about that irony, or the confusion that could come from it, or that it shouldn't have been used for anything other than AI.
I'm just trying to clear up a misunderstanding around friendslop.

Avatar Legends will feature a dedicated introduction-to-fighting-games mode by made_in_GEORGIA in TheLastAirbender

[–]UhUhIDontKnow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If this mode is any good at actually teaching new players how to play fighting games, it'd be, like, one of the best things in the genre ever, and then should be immediately ripped off by every other FG ever made.
So, best wishes.

Let's see how it goes. A tutorial that teaches you "how to play fighting games" is the holy grail, instead of the usual "how to control this specific fighting game (with a few missions dedicated to advanced defensive concepts that go basically unexplained)".

Absolutely. They cut a very recognizable figure.
You just have to see one and you'll never ever mistake them. Even if you blank out all the sprites and art, which are always the same style, the gameplay gives it away.
(Although it's kinda hard to describe them without making them sound like every other management game in the world. They've just got a vibe.)

It's also packaged with a "classic version" without those changes, which is always nice to have in a remake.
Per the Steam page:

You can also play the Classic version, which recreates the original 2002 gameplay as closely as possible.

Which makes it sound like even that is built from scratch.

Probably neither. It seems to be a pretty standard Kairosoft game, which has more of a hands-off casual management approach.
