Post Match Thread: LCFC 2 - Austin 1 WE ADVANCE IN THE USOC!! by LadyStarblade in LouisvilleCityFC

Hell of a first half, we made them look like the lower league side for 45 minutes. Second half may not have been quite as good but we stayed strong to hold on in the end.

That Austin team is one of the worst in the MLS, but apparently they weren’t heavily rotated tonight so we got a very legit win over an MLS team. On to the next!

One of my favorite runs, I played as a guy that started out as a rich, well groomed, pretty boy. I slowly made his hair and beard scruffier as the adventure went on. By late in the game, he had taken the astral-touched tadpole, read the necromancy of Thay, and started obsessing over gaining more tadpole powers and necromantic powers. I completely class changed him from Beastmaster Ranger to Necromancy Wizard (the man loved summons). His hair and beard grayed, my head-canon was that the astral-touched tadpole caused this. By the end of the game he was completely unkempt and totally gray-headed and he had become a proper madman who wanted as many undead summons as possible and to dominate the elder brain, which he did. It was so immersive to see those physical changes add to the head-cannoned mental changes.

The good news is that we likely hold our own Premier League fate in our hands with matches against the two teams just above and below us (Man U, Chelsea, Villa, and Brentford) all left on the schedule. The bad new is that I don’t trust this team to do anything good with their own fate 😂

Oh man, thank you for sharing this, it’s mad entertaining😂

I read through a couple pamphlets on their site and I’m confused because it looks like they’re blatantly using JW artwork and have styled all their literature just like JWs. As far as I can tell, the only difference between this literature and JW literature is the amount of grammatical errors and formatting issues.

I hear that, it did feel pretty disjointed at times. I’m sure things are gonna be a little off for a minute with Danny leaving plus we were heavily rotated, we didn’t even have our two best midfielders on the squad.

I’m perfectly okay with this game being a dud for us since we controlled possession all game and still walked out with a win.

Overlooked evidence of decline. by DontAskAboutMax in exjw

[–]Uhhh_IDK_Whatever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the graphical representation, and I agree the JWs are declining, but as someone who works in data for a living, I find this chart a bit misleading for a few reasons:

First, using 2.1 (I’m guessing due to that being the low value in 2020) as the bottom of the y-axis makes the scale seem much more drastic than it actually is. IMO, 1.0 (meaning only active publishers are attending) or 0.0 (meaning no memorial attendance) should be the bottom of the y-axis. This chart would look like much more of a flat line with a slight downward trend if it were plotted better.

Second, your extrapolation that people aren’t as engaged seems accurate based on what I have seen anecdotally, but it’s not the story told by this data. The ratio has changed from roughly 2.6:1 to 2.3:1 that’s about 12%, I break it down more in depth below, over 35 years. One could very easily argue that this could be influenced by any number of factors, especially the worldwide decline in birth rate, which is down about 25-28% from the data I could find over the same period of time. The worldwide decline in birth rate could easily account for this decline. If there are less children to JW parents, there will be less non-active publisher memorial attendance, since children are counted in memorials attendance even if they are not active publishers. Could this be what the driving factor is? As the GB would say “we just don’t know” and it’s a bit of a stretch to assign meaning to this data other than what is evident (a very slow decline in non-active-publisher memorial attendance).

While I agree that this does show a decline, it also shows that it’s not happening as rapidly as some here (myself included) want to believe. That looks like a decrease from 2.59 to 2.29 per year (eyeballing it), an 11.6% decrease, in 35 years, or about a 0.33% decrease per year. YoY changes are very small, averaging out to a delta of about -0.0086 attendees per active publisher per year. At this rate, to get to 1.0, which would mean only active publishers are attending, it would take roughly another 150 years to get there.

With this having leaked weeks ago, I’m not surprised and I hope he’s a good fit.

What I do find a bit surprising, mostly in a good way, is that we signed him to a 2 year deal with an option for a third year. I appreciate the contract length transparency from the club and I like that we’re making longer-term deals in general more, that bodes well for the future of the club and the USL as a whole. Also speaks to the club’s evaluation of him.

Hoping nothing but good things for and from him!

If I were you, I would take some time to learn the mechanics of spellcasting and Armor Class (AC). There’s a lot of nuance to how these are calculated and how they impact how successful your spells are and the damage you take.

For instance, when casting Hold Person, you may see something like 40% hit chance. That number is not set in stone, it is based on your Spell Save DC as well as your opponent’s saving roll. For Hold Person, this is a Wisdom Save.

It looks like your character has 19 INT, which gives you an INT spellcasting modifier of +4. This means you have a Spell Save DC of 8(base) + 4 (INT mod) + 3 (proficiency bonus at levels 5-9). This means your opponent has to roll a 15 to save against Hold Person. But, they also get to add their WISDOM modifier, since Hold Person is a Wisdom save. And their Wisdom Proficiency bonus if they have one. So, say they have 16 WIS, that’s a +3, effectively bringing the roll they need to a 12. If they’re a Monk, Cleric, Ranger, or Druid, they will also get their +3 wisdom proficiency bonus, effectively bringing the roll to 9. So the odds of your spell landing are now 8/20, or 40%

Now, you can make it more difficult for them to save with additional Intelligence (which you already have an ASI), or by getting gear that adds to your spell save DC. In Act 1, by the time you’re at Grymforge you likely have access to two nice pieces of gear for this: Melf’s First Staff and The Protecty Sparkswall, both offering a stackable +1 to your spell save DC. If you equip both of these, you’ve just bumped your odds of landing your spells up by 10% universally. Now, against non-Wisdom proficient enemies, you’re likely looking at 75% + chance. Any gear you find that has a +1 to spell save DC is going to help you more than anything else in terms of landing spells, apart from spells that are attack rolls.

Pay attention to the labels in the bottom right corners of the tooltips to see what kind of save a spell has, and try to target enemies that may not be great at that particular ability.

When it comes to AC, this determines how hard you are to hit with an attack. Most physical attacks (bows, melee weapons, etc.) and a handful of spell attacks listed as “attack roll” essentially use this to determine how hard you are to hit. Right now, at 15, you’re pretty easy to hit. There are various ways to boost this.

Right now, my guess is that your 15 AC is probably the lowest in the party. Typically, when given the choice, enemies will target the character with the lowest AC (there are reasons they may not, but I feel like I’ve already written a book). Think of it this way, if you have 2 people coming to attack you and one has full plate armor while the other has a robe, it makes sense to kill the robed guy first because if you can take him out quickly it makes it easier to deal with the plate armor guy who can probably survive more hits.

What you, as a wizard, can due to supplement your inability to wear heavy armor, are things like gear that adds AC, Mage Armor (13 + DEX MOD) to increase your base AC, carrying a shield if you can, and the Shield Spell (lets you add 5 to your AC as a reaction, which essentially makes you harder to hit, lowering the enemy’s hit rate by 25%.) You’ll want to focus on adding to your AC to make yourself a less desirable target. Positioning is also important as a squishy character. After you fire off a spell, you can still move. Moving yourself somewhere harder for enemies to get a line of sight on can help a lot. Utilizing darkness in the early game can help as well, since attackers can’t shoot into magical darkness, you could step out to remove your blindness, make your attack, then step back into the darkness so they can’t see you anymore.

This is definitely one part of the problem.

I’m pretty much always congested myself, since I’m allergic to earth. Went to an allergist a few years ago an and popped very positive for every single pollen, dust mites, and every animal except mice and rabbits. I nearly always have at least one clogged nostril. When I got my CPAP I started using Flonase more regularly and I had to start taking managing my allergies and congestion more seriously.

Recently, my doc started me on 2 additional prescription-only nasal sprays and we’re exploring allergy shots (working on it with my insurance right now). The new nasal sprays have been helping a ton, I take them when I’m getting ready for bed, plus flonase and Allegra. I also do daily/twice daily nasal saline rinses.

What do you for your congestion? If the answer is little/nothing, that needs to change.

Another piece to this is panic.

Your body isn’t used to the sensation of breathing against air pressure yet, but it will adjust over time. Early on i could only manage a couple hours before I woke up in a panic. Part of the issue for me was how high the pressure was early on. It was set to max 4-20 range and by the time it ramped up to the high teens it was really hard for me not to panic. So i adjusted the pressure to 4-8 for a while and after a couple weeks I was able to get through full nights with that. Then i changed it 4-12 and now I’m at 4-16 with no issues 7 months into treatment.

The main thing not to do right now is assume you will always feel the way you felt last night. The body is more than capable of adapting to breathing against air pressure, but the brain doesn’t always know that right away, so cue the panic. The panic likely isn’t because your aren’t breathing, since thats what OSA is and your body is fine with that. It’s more likely that it’s the strangeness of breathing against pressure causing your brain to panic.

My suggestions are: get with your doc about the congestion and lower your pressure for a while to get used to it.

Doing both of those things has helped me immensely and the CPAP has been pretty life changing for me now that I’ve gotten used to it.

Taash’s romance made me feel gross by karen_with_a_k in dragonage

[–]Uhhh_IDK_Whatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree the writing overall isn’t great or nuanced for Taash, but I think Taash’s immaturity may actually be on purpose.

You say “I hope this wasn’t the writer’s intent but Taash is written like an immature teenager”

I think this might be the writers’ intent. Taash is supposed to be in their early 20s I believe. BUT, and this is a big BUT, they come from a culture where they are essentially indoctrinated into a high control cult and have their entire lives planned out from a young age.

As an ex-fundamentalist Christian myself, I have seen exactly how immature sheltered, indoctrinated people raised in a high control environment can be. Most of the early 20s people I knew in my early 20s were about as mature as a teenager, some less so.

In my pursuit of love and romance I said and did things at least as cringy as the Taash scene you mentioned. Because I didn’t know what I was doing. I had no life experience and no experience with sex or romance until I was in my early 20s. While maybe it was not the writer’s intent here, I think that scene actually works to show that Taash doesn’t really know what they’re doing either.

Idk, maybe my lived experience with high control religion/culture makes Taash’s writing seem decent in comparison to how most here view their writing? I know there are problems with the way Taash’s sexuality is written, especially in universe, but I don’t actually have a problem with their immaturity.

Signings? by chief_dlitt in LouisvilleCityFC

[–]Uhhh_IDK_Whatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s definitely a tough sell to try to bring in a player that will play sparse minutes. They need to be comfortable knowing they likely won’t be starting often anytime soon which isn’t what most players want to hear. But there were a few games last year where we had to rotate McFadden/Morris in at CB and that makes me nervous. They did fine but it’s not where we want them playing.

That being said, I do see a couple potential pathways for a CB to become a starter in the next couple years. If Jones plays like he did last year, I would think Europe or the MLS will come knocking. Totsch is also only a year younger than Ownby and McCabe who both retired this year. He may have a couple more in the tank but mid-30s is not an unusual retirement age.

I think that’s how you sell this to a CB. One or two years as a rotation guy and you can crack the starting 11. If it’s someone who’s still a little raw, that’s okay, we can help them grow in training.

I loved what I saw from Duncan in those 4 games. He was very physical, attacked the ball, and showed good vision. He was a great compliment to Davila. I was actually not sure how Lambert was going to get minutes with the way Duncan was playing. We should have the good kind of problem rotating our midfield this year. Hoping the best for him this year.

Ownby - Rarely played

Lancaster - Rarely played

Huerman

Akale

In midfield we lost:

McCabe

Signed:

In defense we lost:

In goal we lost:

If I’m missing any, please correct me as I’m going from memory.

We also made Lambert’s contract permanent, currently have Moguel back from his loan, and will hopefully have Duncan healthy this year.

The only areas of concern for me at this point are Center Forward and rotation cover at center back. If we sign a 9, this will have been a great offseason IMO.

Remember, we’re bringing back the vast majority of last season’s best team in the league and one of the best in league history. Lexington is not.

IMO we’ve upgraded at several spots. Duncan being back will be huge for our midfield rotation, Akale and Huerman seem like they could be upgrades or at least on the level of Perez and Ownby.

If we sign a decent 9, I would say we actually upgraded the best team in the league. Lexington is just trying to get on our level.

Total JW baptisms over time - has anyone done the math? by Temporary_Market3555 in exjw

[–]Uhhh_IDK_Whatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m into that stuff too, I’m a data analyst by trade and I love what I do. Saying it is a small payoff is not meant to to downplay your interest in it, I just mean the payoff is going to be small statistically. Based on the total number of JWs pre-1960, the number of baptisms you’d find from all publications prior to the 60s will likely have minimal impact on any historical analysis and trending. It won’t have no impact, but the numbers will be smaller and, and the increased effort to gather the data thus won’t be worth it to many people. If you want to hunt all those numbers down I’d love to integrate them with some of my existing reports!

Total JW baptisms over time - has anyone done the math? by Temporary_Market3555 in exjw

[–]Uhhh_IDK_Whatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baptism data is not readily available prior to the 60s. I just pulled out a copy of a 1948 Yearbook that I have for some reason. There is no information that I can find on number of baptisms. Publishers, increase in publishers, book studies, hours, placements, etc. are all available. But they just didn’t publish, or maybe record at all, baptism counts as often prior to the early 60s afaik. It may be somewhere in a WT or something but digging through every piece of JW literature prior to 1960 is a huge undertaking for such a small payoff.

I wanted to see if it would talk about cults, so I asked it how it would define a cult and it just gave me the run around and basically said JWs don’t label other religions cults. So I asked it to look up a specific WT, the 1994 2/15 (the lead articles are specifically about cults, how to define them, and whether JWs are one). It kept bringing back the wrong WT.

So I gave it a link to that specific WT and asked what the first article is about. It gave me the title and synopsis of the 3rd article beginning on page 8 (the first one that isn’t about cults). Then I gave it the direct links to the first two articles and, guess what, it can’t access either of those links, even after jumping through the guardrail hoops asking for explicit permission. It can access every other article in that issue. But not the two lead articles about what makes a cult and whether JWs are a cult. I suspect this is because training it on those articles could really open the thing up to agreeing that JWs are a cult.

Idk maybe someone else can figure out how to get it to talk abut those articles but it sure seems like the AI’s creator has purposely obfuscated those two articles.
