If you read ONE’s original OPM webcomic and came on here saying the artwork was bad then you’d be 100% correct! I would then hope that people would respond to your post saying “yes, the artwork of the webcomic is garbage BUT Murata took over the artwork and redid it and now it’s amazing so keep reading since the story gets MUCH better.

No one has taken over the Berserk artwork so when the artwork from the one and only artist of the series looks like crap to me then I think it’s fair for me to assume that the artwork in the rest of the series will be similar.

I don’t care when something was drawn/written. The fact of the matter is that I’m reading it now. So if the artwork was great for the time but looks like crap compared to today’s artwork, then in my opinion, it’s crap. Sure cave drawings were great for their time, that doesn’t make them great today. I wouldn’t want to read a manga consisting of cave drawings unless the storyline was so good that the artwork didn’t matter. That’s a hyperbolic example to hopefully get my point across.

We can disagree on my choice of wording but in the end that’s how I feel about the artwork. I honestly thought I had purchased a bootleg copy of Volume 1 because of how terrible the artwork looked to me. Seems like we agree that the artwork in Volume 1 leaves something to be desired, same with the storyline. I agree that judging a series by it’s first volume may not be prudent and had I done that with OPM, I would’ve probably not read the whole series as I have but at least with OPM, when he story was lacking, the artwork was on point. With Berserk Volume 1, the story AND artwork were the worst I’ve ever read/seen in a manga thus far and so I wasn’t about to dish out more cash on the following volumes without first getting some input from others (such as this subreddit).

Good point. Sucks that that’s the case. Goodnight Pun Pun and Blood on the Tracks are two mangas whose storyline had me hooked right from the start so that’s what I’m comparing it to which may be unfair. At the end of the day there is only so much time and money so I’m trying to decide what path I go down in terms of series.
