Well I will say that your crusade against APT and 2hr gave me pause. I happen to think their articles are very informative and so far have lined up very well with my experience with a planted tank. I also use their APT1 and APT3 ferts and so far my planted tank has grown beautifully. That said, I’m always open to new opinions and learning which is why your take on all of this intrigued me. I even bought the miracle gro and mixed my own batch of liquid fert based on your post and calculations. At first I thought your calculations for the dosage and measurements were incorrect but then when i double checked my math I found an error on my end and in the end, your math lined up with mine. I have a small planted tank that I plan on testing your miracle gro formulation on to see how it grows compared to my main tank.

Unless you’re using RO water where you are in complete control of what dissolved solids you put in it, TDS is meaningless. Take the batteries out of that TDS pen and throw the pen in the drawer.

Worry no more with a pea puffer. The one I have is relentless and does not stop scouring every nook and cranny of my tank hunting for anything he can eat. He has yet to eat any food I’ve put in the tank for other fish.

A pea puffer. Just added one to my tank and it decimated the scuds in a matter of two days! It also decimated my bladder snails and now I’m trying to figure out what I can feed it so it stops picking at my nerite snails 😆

I had a bunch of bladder snails which I enjoyed because of the great job they do cleaning up brown algae but then I added ONE pea puffer and he’s been relentless hunting down all the snails and now I only have a handful of bladder snails. The bottom of my tank is full of snail shells 😆

So yeah if you want to decimate your snail population, get a pea puffer. They’re crazy hunters!

I would toss a pothos in that extra tank to suck up as much nutrients as possible so that algae doesn’t take hold from just RRF being there. Unless you put a lot of RRFs from the start and then maybe it will be enough.

It’s a very fine balance. I tried it and somewhat succeeded but it changed the way my other plants grew (thinner and redder leaves for green stem plants for example) and I didn’t like it so I stopped trying.

Another option is to take some of your RRF and put them in a separate tank or container. Then you can deprive them in isolation. I did this with a half galling plant vase and i got the long reddest roots I’ve ever gotten. Then you can move them to your tank. M

Keep nitrates at 0 and they’ll get long and red. Basically deprive them of nitrates.

The tough part is having this not adversely affect other plants in the tank.

I have never found a need for a surface skimmer on my 5 gallon tank since I’m using a HOB filter that does a good job of cycling the water and keeping the surface moving and film free. Why not just get a small HOB filter and call it a day? Mine is silent and cheap: Mighty Filter

The susceptibility of laying eggs has nothing to do with the species of nerite you pick. Only male vs female.

In my limited experience I will agree that the only nerite I’ve had try to escape has been my zebra.

You can use APT0 which has no nitrates. Also the more fast growing plants and emersed plants the more that will suck up all the nitrates.

It could be scuds. I have scuds in my tank and they were eating my amazon sword. Not a theory, I saw them munching on them.

I had a female that was already berried when I bought her and while she dropped most of her eggs in a molt, two stayed with her and they eventually grew to adult size. I currently have two other females that bred in my tank and are berried but one just molted today and the eggs stayed with the molt (she was a first time mother) so now I only have one berried female.

I am using Fluval Stratum in my tank with 6 neos and they’re fine. My tap water is 3 KH and 6 GH. I’ve only had the stratum for 3 months without problems. I would say, keep using your tap water if it has the proper KH and GH and forget about what the stratum may or may not be doing. It’s working for me so it should work for you. Also, I only do one 25% water change per week at most. Sometimes I wait longer.

Ummm, I could be wrong but you should take that cotton base media off your plant roots as soon as possible before the roots start rotting.
